2. Present Day- 2013

"Oh wow Boo its perfect!" Angela Perry squealed, hugging her husband of 2 weeks, Bruno. Bruno grinned at the beauty by his side, though slightly ashamed at his nickname "Boo", given in ever large doses by Angela, much to the annoyance of the real estate agent showing them the house. It was obvious that the real estate agent was a man-hating lesbian; Bruno recalled with slight amusement that upon sighting Angela, she had been heavily seductive towards her, even in front of her husband, while shooting Bruno death-stares. Bruno immediately sensed something very wrong with this woman, a sense honed from serving within the top echelons of the US Special Forces. As hard as the real estate agent tried though, Angela was ignoring her advances- Angela herself thought that the woman was weird. Nonetheless, the couple remained pleasant.as the woman, with increasing resentment, showed them through the house.

Bruno and Angela were set on buying this house. It was a large family home, set in the Colorado mountains, a perfect place to raise a family, or as Bruno put it, "life-saving". He was referring to their third house-guest- Angela's sister, Madeleine, someone who can only be described as broken. A heroin addict for years, she disappeared from her home, from her abusive parents, into the wilderness of Downtown Denver, finding solace with heroin and fellow addicts. It had taken years for Angela to finally track her sister down and pull her from the streets.

"Soooo are you interested?" snapped the real estate agent, obviously wanting her commission. Usually Bruno would have been more than happy to tell people like her to go and pull the stick out of their ass, but the home quelled his temper. "We'll take it" Bruno smiled politely, though wishing that this woman would jump off a cliff. "How much? We have a current bid for $500,000" sneered the woman, who no doubt was thinking that Bruno couldn't afford such a luxurious place- this, of course, was a lie. It was really only bidding at $255,000. Which apparently Angela knew too. "No no honey, I'm looking at the property on your website and the current bid is at $255,000" Angela said politely, though with a noticeable chill to her voice. Bruno smiled blandly at the ever-reddening woman, stating "$350,000. We'll take it at that." The woman, who had expensive tastes, was disappointed at only a $35,000 bonus. She entered the bid on her laptop, fiddled around for a few moments, and stated, "done. That's the highest we've ever had, and that'll be the highest we'll ever get." "For a house this nice?" Bruno enquired, "there must be a reason why the price is so low. Did something happen here?" The woman blanched up for a split second before recomposing herself. "No of course not, Mr Perry" she hissed, "and even if it did, I certainly wouldn't tell YOU!" Bruno remained unfazed by this hissy fit; Angela, on the other hand, had turned scarlet with hidden rage. Bruno gave her a silent warning to cool it and filled out the rest of the forms on his laptop, authorizing $350,000 to be immediately paid to the real estate account. "It's done ma'am, thank you for all of your help" Bruno smiled warmly, offering his hand. The woman looked at him with revulsion before throwing the keys at his forehead (she missed) and stalked off to her fancy car, knocking over the approaching young girl.

"Watch where you're going you fucking junkie!" snapped the woman, kicking the girl as she clambered to her feet. The girl stared her dead in the eyes before grabbing her throat and punching her in the face. Angela started towards the woman in a fit of rage; how could she do that to her sister, the bitch? As the woman lay on the ground screaming, the girl clambered up again, flicking dirt off her arms, and staring at her sister with sad, apologetic eyes. Angela immediately softened, running to hug her sister. Her sister melted into her, like a lost child. Nothing was said as the two girls hugged it out while Bruno started towards the woman, very angry. "You take yourself out of here right now lady, or you'll regret it" Bruno warned. The woman snarled at him like an animal before stalking off, shouting over her shoulder "You're all going to die! The witch is coming to kill you!"

"Hellcat huh?" Bruno smiled, looking at the woman now driving off, his comment directed at the young man lolling against his car. "Yeahhhh... I think she wanted your wife" chuckled the younger man, as him and Bruno embraced. "How've ya been, Brian?" asked Bruno. "Good man, glad I got her here in time" the man known as Brian smiled, nodding towards the younger woman being comforted by Angela. Bruno had no time for the people that Madeleine hung around on the streets, but he had met this guy Brian when Brian had rushed her to the hospital after another OD, staying by her bedside all night. Bruno didn't want to know what he did, could tell straight away that he was a criminal, but he appreciated what he had done for Angela's sister, thus taking a liking to him. Angela approached Brian, hugging him while greeting him. "Thank you, Brian, for everything you have done to protect her" Angela said with sincere gratitude. "It's no problem, really" Brian smiled, his brown eyes betraying a different emotion- sadness mixed with hope. Sadness that he wouldn't have a friend in downtown Denver anymore, but hope that she would turn her life around, get out of the game, off the drugs, for life. Just then, the girl shuffled up, asking her sister "can I say goodbye to him?" Angela nodded, as her and Bruno left Brian and Madeleine alone. It was time to start planning where everything was going to go.

Brian drove away, watching Madeleine disappear into the rearview mirror. He very much wanted to ask her out, but their lives were so different. At least Madeleine had a chance to go straight. He didn't; he was doomed to committing crimes and being a hustler for god knows how long. Ever since he had left that damned mental hospital at the age of 18, that was all he knew. Then he remembered his other friend that he had met- a rich guy in his mid 40s that had big-time criminal written all over him. He had met him after doing a repossession favour for some deadshit Easterner-looking guy, a conman if he had ever met one. He had taken back the car, only for the old man to spring out from the backseat pointing a gun at his head. He had forced Brian to drive him to the dealership, parking the car in the back alley. He had made Brian walk into the shop, throwing the salesman the car keys... before the old man walked up and shot the salesman 15 times. The old man had introduced himself as Michael, giving Brian $3000 for "a job well done, and meet me at my house, so I can explain to you how the world works". And there was that house, too- Brian knew the area of the house from somewhere, he just couldn't quite put his finger on it. Whatever it was, it gave him the chills.

3 WEEKS LATER

Bruno and Angela had fully moved their stuff in, with help from Madeleine, who had also appointed herself the house cleaner, making the house look a treat every time Bruno and Angela came home from work; they had started their jobs at a sawmill nearby, Bruno operating the cranes while Angela worked as a storehand for the timber. Madeleine, for her part, had gotten through the worst of her heroin withdrawal, though Angela knew that it would take a long, long time for her sister to fully heal. For nights now, Angela had been having flashbacks of the few times that she had witnessed Madeleine's brutal treatment at the hands of her bitch of a mother and her monster that she was supposed to call her stepfather. Her and Bruno had just met and gone on their 6th date that fortnight, and Angela was going to pick up her sister from her house. Her and Bruno waited out front for half an hour before tentatively going to the front door, peaking through the window. What they saw horrified them: Madeleine receiving the most vile sort of assault from her stepfather, while her mother watched calmly, stoned on heroin. Bruno had kicked the door in and started laying into the old man, kicking the absolute shit out of him, while Angela grabbed a screaming, gagged Madeleine, hauling her out to the car. Her mother had rushed her with a kitchen knife, intent on killing both her daughters. Angela had grabbed a handgun left carelessly on the hallway table, striking her mother in the head. The police had come afterwards, hauling their mother and her boyfriend off to jail. But It was too much for Madeleine, who escaped the hospital to start a new life (or death wish) on the streets, finding solace in heroin. Angela always boiled with anger when she remembered this particular incident. She resolved from now on to make sure Madeleine healed. She also had the weird feeling that someone was staring at her.
