I pulled up outside my childhood home; it was the one on the corner of the street, which was great if you were ever on lookout for the cops because you could see both ways up the street. Yeah Zacky and I liked to tepee the neighbour’s houses a lot as teenagers.

I got out of the car, locking the doors and walking up the crazy paving path, the grass was cut short, and the flowers were bright and colourful in their beds. My Mom liked gardening, she believed that all nature should be cared for, or something along those lines, I’m not sure, she was a bit of a strange woman, but her heart was most definitely in the right place.

“Riley baby!” She exclaimed when she opened the front door.

“Hi Mom” She smiled and pulled me into a tight hug, kissing the top of my head before letting me into the house. I could hear voices in the other room, so I assumed the people that she had over still hadn’t left yet.

“Sorry we got engrossed in conversation” My Mom was saying as we entered the living room, there was a woman in there, about the same age as my Mom, and a man maybe a little bit older than me, I’d say late twenties. He nodded to me, but I wasn’t really in a smiling mood so I only nodded politely. “Riley honey this is Adriana” She said gesturing to the woman “And her son Mason” She said gesturing to her son. He was watching me, with eyes that were a shocking shade of green. They kind of reminded me of Zacky’s eyes actually.

My Mom told me to sit down and she’d get me some tea, Adriana saying that she’d go with her, for some reason I got the impression that they were trying to get the two of us to talk to each other. I shifted my knees up so that they were against my chest, I sniffed.

“Are you okay?” Mason asked me, his voice was soft and low, it was a little bit gravely, but it fit him, it was nice on your ears.

“Kind of”

“Kind of?” He sat down next to me on the couch.

“Not really”

“That sounds a little more like it”

“How do you mean”

“You look upset”

“You’re very perceptive”

“What’s his name?”

“Huh?”

“You have that look on your face”

“They have two names because they’re two separate men”

“Okay now I’m intrigued”

“Ever heard of the band Avenged sevenfold?”

“Who hasn’t?”

“Well Zacky and I have been best friends since kindergarten…”

“So you like your best friend?”

“Not exactly”

“Care to explain”?

“Well I’ve liked his band mate Brian since high school”

“Synyster Gates?”

“Bingo, but he has a girlfriend called Michelle who I’m pretty sure doesn’t like me all that
much, and he doesn’t show any signs that he’ll be leaving her any time soon, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ll never have him and I need to move on”

“I still don’t see where Zacky fits into all of this”

“Well here’s the stupid thing, three weeks ago we were painting my bedroom and we got into a bit of a paint war and then I dumped half a tin of red paint over his head, and I thought that he was just gonna wipe it on my face but he kissed me”

“So…”

“And then I kissed him back, but it pisses me off because I don’t like him that way at all, he’s like my brother, it’s weird”

“Sounds like you need something to take your mind off of things” He was grinning now.

“What are you thinking?”

“Me and some of my friends are going to a local club to night, one of my friends is playing in
a band there, feel like coming?”

“I’m not sure I don’t know if… I only just met you”

“And I only just met you, but I’d most definitely like to meet you again, you seem cool”

“Even though I just spilled my guts up to a perfect stranger”

“Yeah” He grinned showing off his pearly white teeth. Now that I looked him over properly, he was good looking, not as handsome as Brian, but he was very easy on the eyes.

“Okay, I’ll come with you”

“Awesome, here give me your hand”

“What are you—“ He took my hand anyways and pulled a pen out of his bag that was on the floor, he wrote something on my hand, when I took my hand back I saw that it was his phone number, he held the pen out to me so I assumed he wanted my number too, so I wrote it down on his hand, he smiled.

“I didn’t think that would actually work” He grinned.

“Well you’re smooth”

“Why thank you”

“Mason come on we’re going your Father wants us to pick him up on the way home” He
nodded and picked up his bag.

“I’ll call you” He said winking as he went out the door, the second the door was closed my Mom turned on me.

“Why is he calling you?”

“We’re going out tonight to see his friend’s band play”

“Okay, now honey, tell me the reason you were so upset on the phone”

So I relayed the whole thing to my Mom who listened patiently until I had finished, she took a sip of her tea and looked at me.

“Do you know what I think you need to do? I think you need to forget Brian, I know it’s not going to be easy, but he’s with Michelle honey, as far as Zack kissing you goes, I think it generally was a mistake, I mean if he did like you that way, you’d think he would have told you by now right?”

“Yeah, I’ve never thought of him that way”

“Well maybe you should go out with Mason tonight, it will definitely take your mind off of things”

“I know what you’re thinking Mom, and I don’t see it happening with Mason”

“Why not?”

“Because I hardly know him”

“Isn’t that what the point of tonight is?”

“Yeah I suppose”
