I was sitting in afternoon detention next to the guy that I just got in a fight with. I don't even remember what started the fight, I just remember him punching my jaw so I retaliated. His name is Jimmy Sullivan and mine is Brian Haner. I have brown hair, brown eyes and as I discovered I can have a bit of a temper when people make me snap. I wasn't completely unaware of his existence. He was friends with my friend Matt Sanders and I see him around school occasionally.
"So boys." Our teacher asked standing in front of our desks. "What has this taught you?" He asked.
"If you're going to bash someone, don't get caught?" Jimmy asked.
"Sullivan, just go." Mr Taylor said shaking his head.
"Bye sir." Jimmy said as he walked out the door and Mr Taylor turned to me.
"Brian, I was surprised you retaliated. Please don't do it again." Mr Taylor said as I nodded knowing too well I would never turn away from a fight.
"Yes sir, it won't happen again." I said as he gestured to the door and I left.

"You aren't a sissy after all." I heard a voice say from behind me. I sighed knowing it was Jimmy, I went to keep walking but he stood in front of me. "It's rude to walk off when someone is talking." Jimmy said.Jimmy was pretty tall for our age, he had jet black hair and ice blue eyes. He towered over me, myself being a pretty average height for a boy our age. He obviously wanted me to continue the conversation.
"No I'm not a sissy. I don't need to fight to prove that but my dad always told me if someone hit me I was allowed to hit them back in self defence." I said as Jimmy looked down at my shirt.
"Dude you like Metallica?" Jimmy asked with the biggest grin on his face.
"Yeah of course I do." I said sarcastically.
"You have to come over my house." Jimmy said dragging me by my arm out the school and in the direction to what I'm guessing was his house.

I know, we were only bashing each other a few hours ago and now I'm going over the guys house. It doesn't sound like the smartest idea but Matt has told me Jimmy's a pretty cool guy, he's just a little hyperactive. Jimmy opened the door and gestured for me to follow.
"Mom, I'm home." Jimmy yelled out. I was surprised how loud he could be. A woman walked from down the hallway and smiled.
"Hello James dear, how was school? You're home a bit late." She said.
"Well I ended up in afternoon detention but I'm home now." Jimmy said as his mother sighed. "Oh and this is my new friend, Brian." Jimmy said as his mother turned to me and smiled sweetly.
"Nice to meet you dear, make yourself at home. Would you like a drink?" She offered.
"No thank you Mrs Sullivan." I said politely. Jimmy took my arm and took me down to what looked like a basement.
"This is mine and my sisters hang out. She is probably down here somewhere. She was home sick today, like always." Jimmy said.
"You have a sister?" I asked as he nodded.
"Yep, well one normal sister and then there's my twin. ELLIE!" Jimmy called out as he stomped down the stairs. The place was pretty dark but there was a small window that shone some daylight in on the dark blue walls. There was a TV, VCR and a CD player. There was also what looked like a futon bed and two old couches.

That's when I saw her, the most beautiful girl I had ever seen was sitting on the blue couch. She had long black curls that covered her face as she read her book while listening to her discman. She looked up at her brother and smiled. Crap, they did look almost identical. She had the same devilish smile and ice blue eyes that Jimmy did.
"Hey Jimbo." Ellie said as Jimmy rolled his eyes and pulled his bag off of his shoulder.
"I have told you how many times? Don't. Call. Me. Jimbo!" Jimmy said annoyed as he pulled a folder out. "Here is your school work you missed this week. Lucky." Jimmy said handing over the folder to the girl.
"Thanks, you make it sound like I enjoy having time off school." Ellie said as I moved from behind Jimmy and for the first time our eyes met. It felt like there was an electric connection between us. I had never had that kind of feeling with any other girl. I noticed she was wearing a Pantera shirt and I smiled.
"Hey, my name is Brian, awesome shirt." I said as she blushed then held out her hand.
"My name is Ellie, nice to meet you." She said as I shook her hand. Her voice was soft but sweet and she seemed a bit nicer, perhaps a little less bipolar, than Jimmy.
"Yeah, smelly Ellie." Jimmy said as Ellie shot him a glare.
"You are so embarrassing." Ellie said as she went through the folder and sighed. "I will be on this all weekend." Ellie said as Jimmy went upstairs.
"I'm getting us all soda." Jimmy said as Ellie motioned for me to take a seat on the couch next to her. Ellie put down the book she was reading, grabbed a pen and started on the work in her folder.

"So how does a nice looking guy like you end up friends with my ratbag brother?" Ellie asked me. "He hasn't taken you hostage has he?" Ellie asked as I looked at her a bit worried.
"No, not as far as I know he hasn't taken me hostage. Does he do that with kids he beats up at school?" I asked a bit worried I had got myself into a dangerous situation.
"I'm just kidding, Jimmy and I have this great knack for interrogating people and making them nervous. I will kick his ass for you later, he always acts like a bully when I'm home sick from school and not there to kick his ass into line. I'm the only one that he listens to." Ellie said.
"That's really not needed. We have got on pretty well since the punch up, it's a pretty funny situation. So if you don't mind me asking, why are you sick?" I asked as Ellie went quiet.
"Maybe when I know you a bit better I will share. Sorry, I just don't like talking about it. I rather talk about happier things. Like the fact I am hopefully going to Disneyland next weekend." Ellie said cheering up.
"That's okay. You openly like Disneyland?" I asked a bit surprised. Most people in middle school saw Disney as childish.
"Yes, I have loved Disney all my life. Being at home sick a lot I have a lot of time to watch movies and the majority of my collection is Disney. I do love thrill rides so I love Knott's Berry Farm but Disneyland is closer and it's a real special for me to go somewhere like Disneyland. There’s a lot of hope and happiness there and sometimes that’s just what both Jimmy and I need." Ellie said.
"Well I am sure you will have a great time, I do love Space Mountain myself." I said.
"Jimmy gets to invite one friend so maybe he can invite you. I don't know if he had anyone picked yet." Ellie said as Jimmy returned with sodas. Jimmy handed Ellie and I both a can then plopped down on the couch beside me.

"Well I see you two have made friends. What did I miss out on?" Jimmy asked as Ellie kept focused on her work.
"I was just telling Brian how excited I was that I get to go to Disneyland next week." Ellie said as Jimmy nodded.
"Yes, your once a month outing. Are you coming to school any month soon?" Jimmy asked.
"If I am okay tomorrow morning I will come to school okay. I hate missing time off school." Ellie said. "Especially considering I suck at maths." She said putting the folder on the ground.
"If you want I can help. I do pretty well in maths." I said as I picked up the folder and opened the section labelled maths. Shit, she was doing maths I had yet to see. "What maths class are you in?" I asked as she smiled.
"I am in the top English, math and science classes but I do work the year above for homework as extra credit. It also helps the next year which keeps me in the top class." Ellie said.
"Well if you want I can ask my older brother Brent, he was smart in school so maybe you can come over my house and he can help you. We only live down the street." I said.
"Thanks, I will have to ask my parents but I am sure they would be okay if it's for tutoring and you only live down the street." Ellie said as I passed her the folder and she skipped to science.

"While nerd over there does tutoring you and I can hang out." Jimmy said to me.
"Sounds cool to me, it will be nice to have a friend over. My parents kinda worry that I only have Matt and Zacky come over. They think they're my only friends." I said as Jimmy looked at me.
"Do you mean Matt Sanders?" Jimmy asked as I nodded and Jimmy grinned. "Dude, I have known Matt all my life! I know Zacky but we are not best friends." Jimmy said.
"Maybe we can all hang out at my house sometime soon." I said as Jimmy nodded.
"As long as Jimmy promises not to break or burn anything." Ellie said as Jimmy sighed.
"I did that at one party okay? One! That was like a year ago. I don't trash people’s houses now." Jimmy said.
"Tell your brother if he can help me I will pay him for it. The advanced maths homework is the one subject I struggle on. Until the next year when I know exactly what I am doing." Ellie said.
"I don't think he would charge but I am sure he would like the gesture. I will talk to him tonight and see what day he is free every week so he can set an hour of tutoring a week." I said as Ellie smiled.
"Thank you so much, Brian." Ellie said as I felt a weird feeling in my stomach. I loved the sound of her saying my name.

"So what do you do for fun, Brian?" Jimmy asked as I shrugged.
"Well I play guitar." I said as Jimmy looked at me.
"Really? I took you for more of a beach guy." Jimmy said as I smiled.
"My dad is a guitarist and he has me learning jazz and classical guitar. I teach myself music I like by watching videos and through books. That's my dad’s idea of 'rebelling'." I said as Ellie laughed.
"You don't look much like a rebel. You're too nice to be a rebel" Ellie said playfully as I smirked.
"You shouldn't always judge a book by its cover, Ellie." I said.
"I'll keep that in mind from now on." Ellie said.
"So how did you meet Matt?" Jimmy asked as I turned back to him.
"Through school, then we just started hanging out together." Brian said.
"I'm surprised we haven't really met before. Then again, I am in the lowest classes for everything." Jimmy said.
"Well I am in the mid classes." I said as I looked at Ellie. "And I guess I never see you because you're in the highest classes?" I asked Ellie as she shrugged.
"That and being sick I miss a fair bit of school. When I am at school I usually hide in the library." Ellie said as Jimmy laughed and she punched him in the arm.
"Ow! Nerd, when you come back to school I will make you hang out with Matt, Zacky, Brian and me." Jimmy said.
"Matt is nice but Zacky is a bit, strange to me. He smiles a lot and sits too close when he sits near me. I don’t think he understands personal space." Ellie said.

"Do you want to stay for dinner?" Jimmy asked as I sighed.
"I would but my mom is making dinner and she gets annoyed when I don't come home for dinner with no explanation, maybe another time." I said as I grabbed my bag and turned to Ellie. "See you later, Ellie. I will ask Brent and get back to you." I said as she smiled.
"Bye, Brian. Thank you again." Ellie said as Jimmy and I walked up the stairs to the front door.
"You know, she is a really nice girl. She isn't as weird as you make her out to be." I said to Jimmy as he laughed.
"We're twins, we always put shit on each other. But if anyone else says anything about us we beat the shit out of them." Jimmy said.
"I will see you Monday at school." I said as Jimmy shook my hand and nodded.
"See you Monday dude!" Jimmy said as I started walking home. My day had gone a completely different direction to what it had this morning. I now had a new friend and well, a new girl friend. I couldn't wait till Monday when hopefully I would see Ellie again.
