She's The Drug That I Need

Chapter 1

He'd tried to forget about her, he really had, but it hadn't been that simple. In the two and a half years he’d know her, they had become more than just friends with benefits. For him at least, feelings had been involved. And there was also a part of him that knew that if he hadn’t of met her; he probably would have still been in the dead-end relationship with Michelle.

Maybe it would have been easier for him to forget about her if he hadn’t seen that test in the trash. However, it wasn’t that simple; for all he knew he had a son or daughter out there with her. He had to find her. He needed to know for sure.

It had been three years since he'd last seen Sarah and he had spent a lot of time and money trying to find her. No matter how hard he tried he couldn't get her out of his mind. It had taken a while but he'd finally come to terms with the fact that she may want nothing to do with him. What he couldn't let go of was the fact that there was a chance that he was now a father.

Finally hiring a PI had paid off and it turned out that she had never been that far away, living in a beach house in Laguna. A beach house that he'd just pulled up outside of. He shut off the engine and stared up at the building through his aviator covered eyes. When he finally got out of his black BMW his breath hitched in his throat as he saw a silver Audi pull into the driveway. He watched as Sarah stepped out of the car, his heart rate quickening as she then opened the back seat door, a little girl jumping out at her with a squeal. In that second, without having to see her up close, Brian knew that she was his daughter.

Without wasting any more time, he made his way across the street, not knowing nor caring about how he was going to explain his sudden appearance.

"Sarah!" he called out as she let her and the little girl in to the house. She turned her eyes widening as Brian caught up to her.

"Brian? Wh- what are you d-doing here?" she stammered, her grip on the small child's hand tightening slightly.

"I've been looking for you since you left. I found the test in the trash can. Is she mine?" he said nodding his head at the little girl who was staring up at him with big brown eyes.

"Now's not the time Brian." she warned.

"I have the right to know Sarah! If she is mine I want to be part of her life, you can't deny me that" he retorted.

"Now's not the time." she repeated before quietly ushering the small child into the house.

"Sarah look at her, look at those eyes, those cheekbones, if she's not mine whose is she then?"

"You're not the only one I fooled around with Brian." she spat. "You were there when I fucked Matt."

"Then I want a paternity test. And I'm sure if Matt knew that there's a small chance he's a father he'd want to know for sure too." he replied stubbornly, as he stared at her.

"Fine. You can take the test." she sighed "I'll be in touch once I've spoken to the doctor."

"Thank you." Brian replied with a smile. “I just want to-“

"Just leave Brian. I’ll be in touch." she said sternly as she walked into the house, shutting the door behind her.

With a smile still on his face Brian turned and walked back over to his car. As he made to pull off he paused as he saw another car pull into the driveway. He felt his heart twinge as he saw a man in his late twenties get out and walk into the house. The thought that Sarah had moved on and found happiness with someone else had crossed his mind on more than one occasion, but seeing that guy and thinking that he was being a father figure to a child that was highly likely to be his didn't sit well with him. However he knew that until he had the paternity test done there was nothing he could do, so he pulled away and made his way back to Huntington Beach.

When he got back to his house he made his way through to the kitchen and took out a beer from the fridge and stepped out onto his patio, sitting down in one of the chairs, bringing his feet up on another as he stared out over the Pacific ocean deep in thought.

He wondered why Sarah had been arguing against the fact that her daughter was his when it was pretty obvious to him that she looked too much like him for her not to be. Did she hate him? Was she really that uncertain who the father could be? Was the man he saw her new boyfriend? Fiancé? Husband? Was his little girl calling him daddy? Would Sarah really be in touch about the tests?

He was so lost in his thoughts that he hadn't heard Matt calling out his name as he made his way through the house to join him out on the patio.

"Dude, didn't you hear me?" he asked as he sat down, the movement causing Brian to jump.

"Shit dude, are you trying to give me a heart attack?" he yelled. Matt chuckled, and shook his head.

"Well if you hadn't been off in your own little world then you probably would have heard me yell your name at least three times."

"Oh." Brian muttered.

"What's on your mind dude?" Matt asked as Brian took a long sip of beer.

"I've been to see Sarah." he said quietly. "She has a daughter."

"Yours?" Matt asked. The group had become aware that Brian had been searching for Sarah and they had all been in two minds what they thought about it. They knew that Brian had been falling for her before she disappeared and that he had spent a lot of time and money trying to find her.

"Not according to her. She say's that she could be anybody's. Even yours." he replied.

"Mine?!" He yelled wide eyed.

"So she said. Despite the big brown eyes, dark brown hair and strong jaw line." he replied quietly. "I'm having tests done though. If she's mine I want to be her father." Brian told him.

"Is she okay with that? I mean you being in their lives?" Matt asked cautiously.

"I have rights Matt. If I'm her father I have the right to be in her life." he retorted.

"I know that, but she left and it's taken you three years to find her. If she'd wanted you to be in her daughter’s life wouldn't she have stuck around? Got in contact with you?" Matt replied.

"I just want to be a father to my daughter." Brian muttered quietly.

"Is that all you want? What about Sarah?" Matt asked.

Brian sighed, "It doesn’t matter what I want. It looks like she's with someone."

"You were kind of expecting that though right?" He asked as Brian drained his beer.

"Yeah." he replied simply staring off into space.

"Brian, do you love Sarah?" Matt asked quietly.

"I don't know. I think if she hadn't left we may have had a chance of having a proper relationship, but I don't know, she told me that she fooled around with others too." he explained.

“Do you think she’s telling the truth?” Matt asked.

“I don’t know dude. She never mentioned anything before, never talked about anyone else. But then again, we both know full well that she would have gone home with just you that night if I hadn’t of been there.” he replied. “So I really don’t know what to believe. I’ve just got to hope that she’ll get in touch about having the tests done soon.”
