Damn The Fates

Should've Started Running A Long Long Time Ago

We both hold our breath as the footsteps came closer to my door. Dakota puts his forearm across my waist and a finger to his lips.

We sit there like that until the footsteps pass and continue on down the hallway until the sound of the bathroom door at the end of the hall closing causes us to jump slightly. Dakota takes a deep breath and moves his arm.

"I think I just had a heart attack. That was too close for comfort."

I nod in agreement and swipe a shaky hand across my face.

"I think you're right. It is time for me to get out of here."

Dakota grins and helps me to my feet before going over to the window and making some weird bird noise. A moment later I hear the quiet shuffling of feet over shingles and soon an auburn head pops through the window, a huge chesire cat grin in place.

"Hey darlin'."

I almost squeal with happiness.

"Ryn! Oh God I've missed you!"

He swings his lanky frame througn and rushes to embrace me. His arms wrap tightly around me, to the point where it feels as if my ribs are going to shatter but I don't care. I bury my face in his hoodie and hang onto him as if he is the thread holding me to the ground. I feel him bury his face in my hair, sobbing softly.

"I've missed you too Kat. More than you'll ever know."

He sniffs and lets me go. No sooner does he unwrap his arms from around me, I'm caught up in another set of arms.

"Hey you forgot about me."

I grin as I hear the fake pout in the voice.

"Now I could never forget about my Koby now can I?"

Jakoby's chest vibrates with his laughter.

"I've missed you, doll. I'm so sorry I left you here."

I lightly punch his stomach.

"Now I'll be hearing none of that! It's not your fault they took you out of the system. It's none of ya'lls fault."

Dakota smiles softly as I pull from Jakoby's embrace. He motions to a stack of folded boxes beside the window.

"Well, are you ready?"

I nod and begin refolding the boxes back to their original form. The boys begin helping and soon we had them ready to pack. I begin placing my clothes, what few I had, into them, along with all my other possessions. Strangely I feel no sadness about leaving like this. I feel...nothing.

"When we get a chance we gotta buy you more clothes."

I roll my eyes at Ryn's statement.

"Like hell you are."

I finish packing quickly. The boys climb back out the window, boxes in hand. I take one last look at the room I've inhabited for the last ten years and crawl out of the window.
