Damn The Fates

Chase These Memories That Are Haunting Me

Screams. Terror freezes my heart. Acrid smoke fills my lungs with every breath I take. Darkness covers me and all I see are the eyes that have haunted my dreams for almost ten years. I am able to see the pained and panicked gaze. A distant voice calls to me and the eyes turn a vivid blue then to hazel then to bright green. The consistently changing colors all bear the same look.
A flash catches my gaze...
Pain.

I jolt awake clutching my abdomen and panting as if I had just ran a marathon. My bed sheets stick to my clammy skin along with my hair. I glance over at the small alarm clock beside my bed. 3 a.m. I stand and peel the sheets off, shivering as a cold draft blows through my open window. I freeze as I realize that I'm not alone in the room.

I hadn't left that window open when I went to bed.

A small shriek erupts from me as someone clears their throat from behind where I am standing. A strong arm wraps around my shoulders as I am pulled into a tight embrace.

"Shhh it's me. Jesus! You scare too easily."

I sigh as I realize who it is.

"Dakota one of these days I'm going to beat the ever-living hell out of you."

He laughs quietly. I wiggle out of his arms and sit back down on my bed, causing the ancient bed frame to groan in protest. Dakota decides against sitting on the bed and instead leans up against the wall. I rub my hand over my face and yawn.

"What are you doing here?"

He shrugs.

"I'm busting you out of this god forsaken place. Eryn and Koby are outside waiting on us."

"Busting me out?"

I look at him as if he's grown four heads. He catches my look and rolls his eyes.

"Don't even start. We know you don't turn eighteen for another two weeks, and frankly my dear I don't give a damn."

I look over at Dakota and frown.

"Really? You're quoting Gone With The Wind now?"

He grins. The moonlight from the open window casts light down on his blonde hair creating a halo effect. He sighs and lays his forehead onto my upper thigh.

"I don't want to leave you here."

"And I don't want you and the guys getting arrested for kidnapping."

"We won-"

He stops as footsteps begin ascending the stairs towards my room.
