I opened my back door and breathed in the salty air. A new start, just what I needed. I had just moved to Huntington Beach from Georgia, to get myself and my kids away from my piece of shit ex-husband. My name is Brooklyn Grace Jones, also known as Brook. I have a four year old son, Cameron, and a two month old daughter, Madelyn. My husband and I were divorced for about six months, reconciled, and that’s how Madi came along. Then he decided he couldn’t handle being a family, and left again. I spent eight and a half months in a depression. Then my baby girl was born on Halloween. Right then and there I decided that I was getting my life back together and getting the hell out of Georgia and away from him. So here we are, in Huntington. I turned around to see what Cam was doing, and he was playing with his dinosaurs.

“Okay baby, it’s time for bed” I said as I kissed his head. “But mama please just a few more minutes!” He pouted. “Cameron McClain, it’s time for bed. You missed your nap today.” Finally he gave in. “Mama, can I sleep in your bed tonight? I’m scared.” He pouted. “Okay baby, but just for tonight. We don’t need to make this a habit again.”

As I laid down with my babies, I breathed a huge sigh of relief. A new start for my precious little family, away from my ex and his verbal abuse. It’s just what we all needed. Tomorrow I’ll be enrolling the kids in a daycare center, and going to find myself a job. I set my alarm and drifted off to sleep.
