I went to sleep early. I just didn’t want to think for a while. I don’t know how long I was asleep when my phone rang.
“Hello?” I groaned.
“Hey, Cat.” A man’s voice said on the other end.
“Brian?”
“Hey.”
“What do you want?”
“Can I come in?”
“What? You’re here?”
“Uh, yeah. Can I come in?”
“You’re asking?” I laughed.
“You usually just break in.”
“I know, I just thought I’d ask.”
I sighed.
“Yeah, hold on, I’ll be right there.”
I got up and went to the front door and sure enough, Brian was on the other side.”
“Hey.” He smiled.
“What do you want?”
“I just wanted to talk.”
“About what?”
I made my way to my bed and laid down. He sat beside me on the bed.
“I know I’ve been kind of an asshole to you.”
I snorted.
“Kinda?”
“I know. I just…”
“You just what?”
“I just want you to know that I really care about you and I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
I looked at him.
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because I wish you would stop being angry with me and stay with me.”
I sighed.
“Look, I’m sorry I jumped to conclusions the other day. It was just a shock to see my grandfather after I thought for so long that he was dead.”
He nodded.
“I know. I didn’t want you to find out.”
“I know.”
I started to pick at the polish on my nails.
He took my hands and held them.
“You’re important to me.”
“Why?”
He sighed.
“Because I haven’t felt this way before.”
“Me either.”
He smiled.
“Can I ask you something?”
He nodded.
“Matt stopped by earlier to check on me and I asked him about your girlfriend..”
He shifted on the bed, uneasily.
“And?”
“He said she was a crazy…”
“She was.” He nodded.
“Why?”
“She was power hungry. She made other vampires besides me. She wanted to go against the head vampires around here and take them down for good. She had to work for them and she hated it.”
“So you were with her for a long time then?”
“A very long time. Too long. I didn’t know where else to go. It was all I had ever known in this life and I thought she loved me but she didn’t. She used me for her own gain.”
I didn’t know what to say.
“So they found out and killed her. They thought her sister was involved too but she wasn’t. They killed her anyway.”
“Poor Matt.”
“Yeah.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“That you had to go through all of that.”
He smiled gently.
“Well, it’s over now. I got over it. It was for the best. I wouldn’t have survived much longer if she was still alive.”
“Why?”
“I couldn’t stand her anymore.”
“Oh.”
I closed my eyes and I felt cool fingers brush my hair out of my face. I breathed deep as he caressed my cheek. His lips touched my cheek and I opened my eyes to look at him.
“You’re beautiful. I wanted to know you the first time I saw you.”
I smiled.
“I want to know more about you.”
“What do you want to know?” he smiled.
