“Hey Beck, is Alec there?” I asked.
“Yeah, hold on sweetie.” She replied.
I heard rustling on the other end of the phone and Alec’s voice come over the other end.
“Yeah?”
“Hey Alec, it’s Cat.”
“What’s up kiddo?”
“Um, I was wondering if I could take today off? I’m not feeling too hot.”
He sighed.
“Yeah, I guess. But I need you here for sure tomorrow.”
“Ok, I’ll be there. Thanks.”
“No problem.” He said hanging up.
I sat my phone down. I just lied out my ass. I wasn’t sick at all. I honestly didn’t feel like going. Brian was on my mind constantly. It was starting to bug the hell out of me. I couldn’t do anything without thinking about him. I still had no idea what to do.
I sat around all day watching TV until it was around dusk then I decided to get up and make myself something to eat.
I sat at the table and was about to eat when I heard a knock at the door. I sighed, hoping it wasn’t Brian. I opened the door and Matt stood there smiling at me.
“Hi.” He greeted me.
“Hey.”
He stepped in and took a seat on the couch.
“So, he sent you here?” I accused.
“No, he didn’t.”
“Oh, then what are you doing here?”
“Just wanted to talk.”
“Ok, about what?”
“He wants you to come back, Cat.”
I sighed heavily, looking down.
“I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“Because I don’t know if I can trust him.”
He laughed.
“And why not?”
“Because what if he was gonna give me up to my grandfather?”
“He wouldn’t. You mean more to him than anything Michael could ever give him.”
I looked away.
“Why are you guys all trying to convince me to go back to him?”
“Who else ?”
“Well, not ALL of you. Just Johnny.”
He nodded.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
“Is it hard for someone like you to want to be with anyone but your own kind?”
He shrugged.
“I guess it all depends on the person.” He began.
“I was with my girlfriend before I became a vampire. I changed her because I didn’t want to be with out her. She also has a sister who’s a vampire as well. My girlfriend made her.”
“Oh, really?”
He nodded.
“Brian didn’t figure it out until it was too late. She’s a nut job. I told my girlfriend not to change her. It would do more harm than good, but she didn’t listen. She changed her and she got with Brian, which we all warned her about and of course she didn’t listen.”
“Did…he want to be changed?”
“I don’t know but he didn’t really have a choice. She practically drained him dry, so she did.”
“What happened to her?”
“Your grandfather killed her.”
My eyes widen.
“What? Why?”
“Because she was a psychopath. She brought to much attention to us. He killed my girlfriend too.” He said quietly, looking down at his feet.
“I’m so sorry. How did Brian take it?”
“He wasn’t too happy about it but he got over it eventually.”
“I have another question. How long has my grandfather been doing what he’s doing?”
“About 15 years or so I think. It didn’t take him too long to climb to the top.”
“Did he start the business he’s in?”
“No, that was around ling before he ever showed up. Long before many of us.”
“Oh. What does he do to you if you refuse to work for him?”
“First he gives you a warning and then he kills you. It’s hard to get away from it because there are so many dealers around. Your grandfather is a main one here in this state. He’s had double the amount of inventory come in because he’s planning something. None of us know yet and we probably won’t until it happens but it really doesn’t look good.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. My grandfather was a sick man. I knew it for sure now.
Matt stood up and started for the door.
“Well I better be going. See ya.”
“Bye.”
And I shut the door behind him.
