I stood there eyes wide and frozen.
“Wh..what are you doing here?” I whispered.
He smirked.
“Just working out some business with my friends here. What are you doing here my dear?”
I quickly glanced at Brian.
My grandfather looked from me to Brian.
“Ah.”
I looked down.
“Well how about we all sit down and get caught up.” My grandfather smiled.
We all sat around the den. I was sitting close to Brian on the loveseat and my grandfather sat in a large, dark leather chair next to the fireplace. Matt and the others guy along with the two men that came with my grandfather were standing around the room.
“How long have you known Brian, Cat?”
“Um…not very long.”
“How did you meet?”
Brian looked at me.
“We..just kinda bumped into each other and started talking.”
“I doubt that.” He chuckled.
He starred at us putting a finger to his lip like he was thinking.
“Well, I guess we’ll be going” he started standing up.
“I’ll talk to you all tomorrow. Have an answer by then.”
Brian and I stood.
“I’ll see you soon, Cat.” He smiled.
“Bye.”
They closed the door behind them and we all stood there. I finally broke the silence. Brian wouldn’t look at me.
“You knew didn’t you?” I accused.
“I told you, you wouldn’t like what you would find.”
“He’s my family. You could have told me.”
“Don’t consider him your family.”
“And why not?”
“Because the less you know the better. I told you that but you still had to snoop around and get yourself into this.”
“Into what?”
He said nothing.
“He’s not a good guy, Cat.” Matt injected.
“Matt!” Brian growled.
“She needs to know Brian. If she wants to keep herself out of trouble, she needs to know.”
“What do you mean keep myself out of trouble?” I demanded.
“Just leave it alone!” Brian groaned.
“I want to know! I think I deserve to know!”
Brian stood with his arms crossed over his chest.
“Your grandfather is one of the head vampires in California. He wants us to work for me.”
“What? Doing what?”
Brian looked at the other guys.
“He runs a business.” He began.
“His business is selling humans.”
“What do you mean by selling them?”
“He hires other vampires to find them and bring them to him so he can sell them to powerful vampires around the state. And when you’re hired, you can never leave. You always have to work for him.”
I sat down.
“He disappeared so long ago I thought he was dead.”
“He is.” Zack laughed.
Then the thought stuck me. My grandfather wanted Brian and his friends to work for him, collecting humans to sell. So what was it to him? Another person to give up for money?
“Is that what this is all about?”
“What?”
“You…doing what you’re doing with me?”
“No, “ he shook his head.
“Then what?”
He looked at the others and they left the room quickly giving us privacy.
“What then?” I demanded.
“Cat, look. It’s not what you think. I’m not going to do that to you. I was never going to give you up to him.”
“Really? Because that’s sure what it seems like Brian!”
“No, no, I wasn’t. I swear.”
“Then what were you going to do? Just kill me?”
“No, I’m not going to kill you. I just..”
“Enough, I’m leaving!” I exploded, heading for the door.
“Cat, please. Don’t leave, it’s not safe.”
“I don’t care. I’m sure it’s a lot safer than being with you here!”
“No!”
He grabbed my arm.
“Let me go!” I shouted.
“No! Please. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“You’ve already hurt me enough!!” I shouted in his face.
His face looked hurt but I didn’t care. I needed to leave. I needed to get the hell out of here and get back to my life and stop living in this fantasy.
I opened the door and started for the driveway.
“Cat! Please!” Brian hollered after me.
I ignored him and kept walking into the night.
