The Red Crayon

Winter And Teddy

“This place looks like a prison rather than an adoption agency” Zacky mumbled to himself as he stared up at the looming grey building that stood above them.

Swallowing a rather large lump in his throat, Brian nodded in silent agreement and gripped his hand tighter. He wished that they had Kennedy with them, because at least then he’d be a little calmer than he felt now. Though Matt had forgiven the three of them for Kennedy’s escape from their apartment, he told them they need a sabbatical from taking care of his child before they could keep her in their house again. Therefore, Jimmy and Ellen had volunteered to watch her until Lexi turned up, hopefully to take Kennedy back to the prison so Matt could see her again. They had all heard about the tearful and slightly dramatic reunion the two of them had on Thanksgiving, and that they wanted to give things another try.

But Brian seemed to be the only one who was having doubts.

“I know honey, but we have to do this. It’s the only one in town that would consider a couple like us” Brain replied with a small smile in his fiancés direction, before he tugged on his hand and the two of them walked into the agency.
As soon as the door had closed behind them, they were met with the sounds of laughter and yelling from one of the rooms, the shouts of children radiating from the upstairs rooms. The building was more like a house inside, with colourful paintings scattered across the wall. It reminded him a lot of Jimmy’s classroom at school- like a paint palette had exploded across the room.

A door to the side of the large entrance opened, and as the two of them turned to stare at the new stranger, they found themselves face to face with a young woman, who was trying to balance a little girl on her hip and a large pile of folders in her arms, looking like she was struggling.
“Sorry! We’re low on staff today and I’ve kind of got my hands full with the children and the paperwork. I’m Kelsey by the way” she said, trying to shuffle her objects around in her hands. Brian unlaced his hand from Zacky’s and stepped forward, holding out his hands for her to hand him something while she sorted himself out.

“Here, let me hold something for you” he offered, but his eyes almost popped out of his head when the little girl was thrust into his arms so the woman could re-arrange her files. For a moment, he stood blankly, with no idea what to do with the small child in his arms, until he remembered what Jimmy had taught him after Kennedy was born and held the baby upright, wrapping the pink blanket further around her tiny little body. Miniscule fists clenched and unclenched and bright blue eyes blinked up at him, a petite little mouth twisting into a smile and giggling; a cute high pitched noise that almost made Brian melt into a little puddle on the floor.

“She’s so pretty, Zee! I just want to take her home with me right now and put her in my coffee…” he cooed as he rocked the little girl, reaching out his long index finger for her fist to curl around. The feel of soft skin on his made his smile broaden even further and as Zacky put his arm around Brian’s shoulder, glancing down at the small child in his arms, the woman who had handed him the baby smiled at just the sight of them.

“Her name is Avery; she’s just about a year old now. Unfortunately, another couple are in the process of adopting her, but we have plenty of other little babies who are in need of a good home. Why don’t I show you into our nursery so you can take a look?” Kelsey asked, and as the two men took one look at Avery in their arms, and another look at each other, they both nodded and followed her into the nearest room. Mozart played softly from a stereo in the corner and as Brian dubiously handed Avery over to one of the other nursery attendants, he glanced over the cribs that lined the walls of the room.

“If you look on the left, you’ll see all the children who have yet to be adopted by a family and taken home. We have four girls and three boys- but only two are brother and sister. Twins, I believe” Kelsey said as she laid Avery down in one of the empty cribs on the right hand side. At the mention of the word ‘twins’, Brian glanced over the cribs until his dark eyes fell on the largest crib in the nursery. One side was painted blue and the other side was painted pink, and all it took were Brian throwing puppy eyes in Zacky’s direction before his fiancé smiled and grabbed his hand, the two of them walking over to the crib.

“Twins, baby. Two babies instead of one!” Brian said excitedly, feeling a little bit like a kid in a candy store as he leant over the side of the crib, gasping when he saw the beautiful sight that lay within.
Two little bundles of cuteness lay in the large crib, a little boy and a little girl both staring back up at them. He had the brightest green eyes that Brian had ever seen, something bearing such a resemblance to Zacky; he could’ve sworn he’d fathered the child. And the girl, who was wearing the tiniest little red and white Santa hat that made Brian make a loud ‘aww’ noise at just the sight, had big brown eyes just likes Brian’s.

“They’re so perfect, Bri-bear. They have the same eyes as us” Zacky whispered as he wrapped his arms around Brian’s waist, kissing his jaw softly, never taking his eyes away from the two babies.
“The little girl is called Winter and the little boy is called Theodore, or Teddy. They were rescued from a house fire about a year ago with no parents or relatives to look after them. They’re perfect for a couple who want to adopt- however, lots of people have been put off by the fact that they cannot be separated. Would you like to hold them?” Kelsey asked, and the two men broke apart slightly when they realised that she was behind them.

Without even having to nod, she knew that they wanted to do with all their hearts and as she lifted the babies out of the crib and into the arms of the two men, she already knew she might have just found a home for these two little darlings.

“Perfect” Brian repeated softly as he cradled Teddy in his arms, wondering what his friend would say if they got the chance to adopt these two little children. They deserved a good home, a home that the two of them could provide for these strange new people they’d fallen in love with so quickly. Winter looked so content in Zacky’s arms, that as Kelsey left them in private, surrounded by cribs of babies looking for homes, Brian walked over and pressed his lips softly against Zacky’s, careful to avoid bumping the babies heads together.

Neither man wanted to let these babies go, it was almost as if the fates were aligning together to tell them that these children were destined to become part of their little family.
“Let’s take them home, honey” Zacky said as Winter’s fist curled around his thin finger, a small tear falling from his eyes in happiness as he stared at his husband.

“Let’s take our babies home”
