Jimmy Sullivan has been a kindergarten teacher for as years, and he loves looking after little children in that one year before school really begins. He doesn't care that he's single, or that two of his best friends are gay, or that another one's in prison. He knows that deep down they are all crayons in his life- or at least that's how he sees them.

But when he meets Ellen, his new teaching assistant, the stunning and introverted girl he used to know as a kid, he wonders what colour she seems to be. But as an abusive past reveals itself to him, he realises it is up to him to find the colour that she is, before she becomes nothing at all.
