The Undead

A New Life Among The Living

Days turned into weeks. The weeks were filled with snow making the roads very hard to drive through when going out to get supplies that we needed. I had to turn off the mines so they wouldn’t go off during the night because of the cold contracting the ground and I really didn’t want to stress out our mother to be. The last thing we all need is a premature birth with no way of taking care of it. Over these past few weeks, all of us hunters had to go out and kill any animal so we would have enough food to live on in case we couldn’t get out and go into town. I really didn’t want to have all of us freezing to death if we had to walk into town and no one needs to be sick.

It’s now March and the days are getting warmer and all the snow has melted from the roadways and it’s coming closer to the day that Dakota is supposed to be having her new baby. I had already made a trip to the Wal-Mart and gotten baby clothes, diapers, and any other necessity that Dakota said would be needed for a newborn. I had given Dakota my room when I assembled the crib so we would be more comfortable and since we didn’t need the fireplace anymore until winter would come around again, I showed everyone where their rooms would be and I placed a weapon plus bullets into the rooms so they would be prepared for anything.

I called out every morning and night just like I have for the past 6 years and I hadn’t gotten anymore answers. I guess no one really needs our help…I sat in the chair next to the window realizing it was getting close to that day or more like that week. I know what you’re thinking. It’s the anniversary of my parent’s death? No…something happened years ago that I just can’t get out of my mind. It haunts me until this day and not even my own sister knows about it. On March Eighteenth, a really good friend of mine committed suicide and I couldn’t stop him from doing it. Both my parents and sister believed the lie that I told them about spending a week with my friend Annette…I was really at the hospital with Jack as he fought to stay alive even though the doctors wanted me to pull the plug because he had no hope in ever recovering but I didn’t want to let him go so easily as those assholes could. I haven’t let on to anyone about what happened and I’ve come so close some times to telling Felicity but I just couldn’t.

I’ve never lied for this long of a time about something and I just can’t face that I had lied to her. I got up from my seat in front of the window and went over to my closed bedroom door and knocked before opening the door.

“How are you feeling Dakota?” I asked as I walked in and shut the door behind me.

“I’m doing well. The baby is kicking like mad though.”

“Do you mind if I feel?” I asked sitting down on the bed beside her. She nodded and I placed my hand gently onto her stomach and I felt a small smack to my hand and I smiled up at Dakota.

“That little baby has a good kick. Maybe it will be kick boxer.” I said laughing.

“It seems like it’s already in training.”

“Anyways, do you need anything?” I asked placing my hand on hers.

“I would love a glass of water.”

“Coming right up! I’ll be back in no time.” I said getting up from the bed and leaving the room. I sauntered into the kitchen and grabbed a glass from the cabinet and filled it with the cold water from the fridge. I left the kitchen and went back into my room and handed her the glass. She gladly drank it all down.

“You rest alright and I’ll be in later to check up on you.” I said with a sweet smile on my face.

“Thank you Serenity.” I nodded before leaving the room and shutting the door behind me. Now all we have to do is wait and hope that nothing happens in the next few hours.

“Serenity!” I heard my name yelled from my bedroom and I quickly rose to my feet and ran into the room where she was.

“What is it?” I asked coming through the door.

“I think it’s time for the baby.”

“How far are your contractions?” I asked going over to her side.

“Every 2 to 3 minutes.”

“Hold on.” I said and I ran out of the room.

“Felicity…get some water on to boil and I need some towels and blankets.” I said getting out some medical supplies from the closet in the living room.

“The baby is coming?”

“Could be any minute. Now hurry!” I said walking back into the room where she was doing her breathing exercises. I pulled out all the medical supplies from my bag and placed each item down on the dresser.

“I need to check you and see what’s going on…okay?” I said pulling up her legs.

“Have you ever delivered a baby before?”

“No this is my first one…I’m nervous as hell.” I said honestly as Felicity came into the room with a pot and some towels. I took the towels from her and placed them underneath Dakota and I checked and seen the head of her baby.

“I see the head.” I said and I could feel her push against me and the baby started moving out. Felicity looked like she was about to pass completely out but she shook off whatever feelings she had and started handing me things that I asked for.

“Don’t push Dakota! I have to get the umbilical cord from around the baby’s neck.” I said and I gently and carefully pulled the cord from its neck and she pushed again and this time the baby came all the way out.

“It’s a boy!” I said as I tied off the cord before cutting it with a pocketknife I had Felicity pour alcohol on. I took a blanket from the floor and wrapped up the tiny bundle before getting up and handing it to Dakota. I had taken a book on how to deliver a baby from the local library and I followed each step in sewing Dakota back up.

“What are you going to name him?” Felicity asked as I finished sewing up Dakota. “Jackson Jr…He would have wanted that.” I put her legs down slowly and covered both her and the baby up.

“Do you want me to go get Dominyk?” Felicity asked and she nodded before leaving the room. I took what was left of the water and washed the blood from my flesh and dried them off on a clean towel. I looked over as Felicity and Dominyk came into the room. Dominyk got into the bed with his mother and new brother and the smile just wouldn’t fade from his face. I gathered up everything and pushed the crib closer to the bed so she could lay her baby down.

“We’ll leave you to rest Dakota.” I said as I dragged Felicity out of the room with me and I shut the door quietly.

“Is it a boy or girl?” “It’s a brand new baby boy and she named it after her late husband.” I said smiling as I announced the good news. Everyone started clapping and cheering but I quickly quieted them down and told them she had to rest. For the first time in a very long time, a new life is among the living and it’s a very special day for all of us.
