The Undead
Learning To Live With The Losses
When we got back to the house and helped Sammy and Hannah bring in all their things, I started cooking the Venison I had bagged a few days ago. I opened 2 cans of vegetables and placed them into a bowl and turned the meat as Sammy came into the room.
“The food sure does smell good.”
“Thanks. I’ve had a lot of practice in cooking after everything that’s happened to this world.” I said leaning my back against the counter.
“How old are you and your sister?”
“I’m 23 and she’s 17. What about you and Hannah?” I asked picking up my water bottle.
“I’m 34 and she’s 14. The losses we’ve endured has taken a lot out on her.”
“She lost her father?” I asked taking a sip.
“Yeah and her younger brother and older sister.”
“That’s got to be rough. The only family I have left is my sister. Our parents pushed us out of the house when we were getting over-run. They died.” I said flipping over the steaks and putting the done ones down on a glass plate.
“I’m very sorry for your loss.”
“Likewise but we all have to learn to live with our losses. There’s nothing we can do about it now. All we can do is take everything one day at a time.” I said putting more steaks into the hot pan.
“Yeah I know. How are you two handling everything?”
“I had to tell my sister a few months after our parent’s death that they only told us to run and not look back because they wanted us to live. I wouldn’t let on about it but sometimes I think I wished I would have gone back and tried to save them. Hopefully after they were turned, someone killed them. I don’t know what would happen if we came face to face with the zombies of our parents. I know my sister wouldn’t be able to pull the trigger. I’m not so sure if I could do it either.” I explained as I finished the food.
“I ran into my husband, son, and daughter in that Pack that you killed…it took everything I had in me to kill all 3 of them but I did it. I just put it into my mind that they are now in a better place instead of aimlessly walking the earth looking for human flesh to gnaw on.”
“Was it hard to do it?” I asked looking down.
“It was extremely hard to do it. It was either do it and stay alive for my now only child or die and have her fend for herself at such a tender age. So I made the choice and now I see that it was the right one.”
“I just hope I can do that if I ever see mine.” I said grabbing the plate of meat as Sammy grabbed the bowl of vegetables and some plates. We went into the living room and sat down around the fireplace eating and staying warm. We all have to learn to deal with the losses we accumulate over our lives…but it’s going to be hard.
