The Undead

Love Ones Die

No one knows why the ones we love die in such horrible fashion but it happens to everyone. I mean nowadays it does. It said in the Bible that the dead will rise up and inhabit the world of the living but I don’t think this is what God had in mind that the dead would turn into such horrible beings that eat on the flesh of the living.

For my sister, Felicity and I this has happened. I still remember as it was just yesterday. I was 17 years old and she was 11 when the dead over ran our home killing both of our parents. Our parents pushed us out of the back door of our home and told us to run into the woods and not to look back. We did hear the gun shots as we ran but then the air was filled with the piercing screams of our parents. Felicity wanted to go back but I wouldn’t let her. I told her would our parents want us to come back after they told us not to look back. I had to convince her that they gave their lives so that we may live. She believed it but sometimes I wondered if I really did.

My name is Serenity Druthers and it has been 6 years today that our parents were killed and the day everything we know and loved stopped. The dead rose up from the grave and started eating human flesh and turning the ones they killed into Zombies. For Felicity and I, the winters were harsh and the Zombies were scarce on the days it was too cold to comprehend but they still came out but they were slow. I pray to God to make winter come as fast as he could so the dead wouldn’t be as, how you would say, coordinated. In the winter months, we would gather as much supplies to defend ourselves with or to keep us from starving and freezing to death.

I have killed many Zombies in these 6 years and most of them were my own kin that had died before Felicity was even born but I knew who they were. The Spring, Summer, and most of the Autumn months were the hardest to get through because of those fucking Zombies. They seemed to pour out of the wood work at night but never in the day so we could travel a good distance before night was to come and then we had to find a secluded spot to take cover. We were hardly ever found but if a walker did find us, that being was dead before it ever noticed us. The next round of winter, Felicity and I gathered up supplies from warehouses, steel yards, glass stores, and police stations and we built on our new home we found. I had done most of the work while I sent Felicity into the nearby town to gather food and any weapons we could use. She was very careful and I was glad she listened to the things I taught her. By the end of winter our home was finished. One day during a hot and humid Summer day, we walked around and I found an old CB radio in a police station and I took it just in hope that someone would hear a message and come and find us.

I wanted to help someone who was plagued by this situation of being homeless, without protection, and hungry but no one ever answered. Now again it’s the middle of Winter and I sat with Felicity beside a crackling and warm fire and eating some canned vegetables and some deer that I had hunted down earlier in the day. I finished my food and set the paper plate aside and picked up the CB radio placing it into my lap and changing it to a different channel. I pressed the button in the mike and sighed.

“If there is anyone out there that can hear me please respond.” I said as I watched Felicity eat the meat.

“If there is anyone out there who is seeking shelter, food, and protection against the dead…Please respond and we will come and get you. If you can drive yourself, I will tell you where you can come to and please pick up anyone who needs help.” I said and again there was nothing but silence. I changed the channel on the CB and repeated my words hoping someone would hear but no one responded. I went through each channel and again there was nothing.

Sometimes I think it’s only me and my sister that’s left on this earth. I placed the CB back down on the floor near my plate and placed the Mike on the top of it and sighed, rubbing my hands over my face.

“Don’t worry Serenity. Someone will answer your calls one day.”

“Yeah one day but what if no one ever answers?” I asked looking down at my hands.

“Someone will answer. We can’t give up on finding people. Maybe someone heard it and will try and contact us.”

“I’ll try again in the morning. You can go to sleep and I’ll keep watch until 2AM and then you can take over.” I said getting to my feet and taking her plate and going into the kitchen where I washed off the plates and laid them on the counter to dry. I went back into the living room where Felicity was covered in a blanket by the fire already asleep.

I grabbed my rifle from beside the fireplace and went up to the attic and sitting in the one person room with a 360 degree view of the whole place. From up here, I could see clear to the road in case someone was to come this way or if any strays were just passing by. There’s been many a time where I’ve shot strays that ventured too close to the house. I didn’t want any of them setting off the landmines I had put in the yard or in the driveway. I sat there in the swiveling office chair, spinning in a different direction every few seconds and looking through the binoculars to check for anyone but no one was there. I hope my sister is right about someone hearing me one of these days.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~M. Shadows POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
6 damn years we’ve been running away from those Zombies and we haven’t found anyone. We left Huntington Beach, California after being over-run by the dead…and it’s hard to lose someone you love. My wife Valary Sanders was killed by the dead and then she rose back up and tried to attack me a few years ago but I shot her right between the eyes. That’s the only way we can even get away from them. After a bullet through the brain, those fuckers don’t get up. They stay dead. I’ve lost my wife but at least I’m not completely alone. I still have my Son Charlie and my best friends along with their children and our beloved pets.
It took a lot to train the dogs not to go after the dead but they learned quickly. All the children learned as quickly as our dogs did and I’m so grateful for that but only the ones old enough, in our eyes, get guns to carry. We don’t want the younger ones shooting anything and wasting what ammo we have left. We really need to find somewhere else to go besides driving from one abandoned place to the next scavenging for gasoline for the SUV and my Black Chevy truck. Johnny did grab a trucker’s CB radio out of a eighteen wheeler in hopes of getting someone on it but there was always silence. I don’t know if we’re calling out at the wrong times or what but I’m beginning to believe that we are the only ones out there. We’ve raided police stations, military bases, stores, and even food banks to get what food, guns, and ammunition we needed and piled everything into our cars.
We have learned a few things throughout these 6 years about the dead. The don’t come out much in the daytime and in the dead of winter, they are scarce. We may see one in a month long time period but when summer, spring, and autumn comes around it’s like they come from everywhere looking for fresh meat. Speaking of fresh meat, all of us guys had to learn to like eating deer, rabbit, and fish that come out of the lakes or rivers. Good thing Brian can cook wild shit like that. Winter is here again and the cold is getting to us all but at least we can build a fire to keep warm. Johnny and Zacky are over at the SUV trying to make contact with anyone out there while Jimmy, Brian, and I are feeding the children and ourselves. I looked over as Johnny and Zacky sat down beside me filling up a plate of food.
“Did you get anyone on the radio?” I asked cutting into my deer steak.
“No one yet Shads. I think I’ll try first thing in the morning and maybe we’ll get someone. I just think we’re calling at the wrong times.”
“We could be. Hell I’ve never been in this sort of situation before.” I said shaking my head and finishing the food on my plate.
“None of us have. This is a new experience to everyone who is still alive.”
“You guys finish eating and make sure the kids get to sleep. Jimmy, Brian, and I will stand guard for a 3 hours.” I said getting up and grabbing a rifle along with Brian and Jimmy. We each took our points around the camp just far enough away where we could see each other. I would look over my shoulder every now and then checking on the children and hoping we find someone soon who will take us in and keep us from this cold. The only things we have is each other and hope.
