Fate Exposed

Chapter 19

As hard as I tried, it could not stop repeating what my english professor had told me in my head. He was so right. Everything he said made so much sense. I have always been one to believe that everything happens for a reason but I’ve never thought about it from the standpoint that maybe things that aren’t supposed to happen will work themselves out so that its meant to be. But then again, sometimes you need to make things happen. That part concerned me to an extent. I wanted to call Matt, but I also wanted him to call me first. I was never one to start the conversation.

Time always seemed to move faster when I was buried in my thoughts. It was around 7 PM when I found myself on Commercial Street. Somehow whenever I went for walks around the city, though I never tried, I always ended up by the wharf district. I settled upon going to a pub called The Black Rose for dinner.

I had come here often when I was little. The Black Rose is probably the most well known pub in all of Boston besides The Green Dragon Tavern, which is the oldest pub in Boston and America. The Black Rose was your average Irish pub and on the occasion bands would perform here. The thing that I’ve always liked the most about the Black Rose though is not the food, but the name itself. It’s name was originally Roisin Dubh, or the little black rose. The name came from a poem by an anonymous author within the poem it stated, “Over the highways and byways the pilgrim goes aflame with the name of my small black rose.” This essentially means that when you come here memories will be created and senses will be stimulated. The meaning itself is of course up to interpretation. Between my love for poetry and my irish descent though, this always fascinated me.

I pushed through the large black door and into the dimly lit pub. I took a seat at the bar and ordered a sprite, of course in public, it was not yet legal for me to drink. This without a doubt, sucked. I ordered a salad as well.

There wasn’t many people in the pub, there was a family with a girl who resembled me, sitting in the table to my far right. A couple stools down from me was a man who looked only a little older than me, he was watching the bruins game that was on the TV in front of us.

“Here’s your salad” The waiter said as he placed the plate in front of me.

“Thank you” I replied.

“So I don’t recall ever seeing you in here, are you from around here” He asked.

“I’ve been living in the city since September, but i’m from Andover.” I replied. He seemed nice, and I didn’t mind talking to someone for once, it helped to get my mind off of things.

“Andover is a nice town. I find it somewhat amusing to ask people where they’re from, I love hearing about the various places people come from, its fascinating” He explained.

“I agree, this is a pretty phenomenal city. People from all over come to see it, as you know,” I attempted to keep the conversation going. I always felt like no matter what I said though, I said the wrong thing. I’ve learned that this is one of the many things anxiety can do to you.

“Very true, so why have you been living in the city?” He asked.

“I’m going to college at Northeastern”

“What are you majoring in?”

“My major is actually undeclared at the moment. I change my mind too much” I half laughed, half sighed.

“I understand completely, I’m currently attending Suffolk University and my major is undeclared. Do you have any idea of what you might like to major in?”

“I’ve thought about either environmental sciences, something with english or psychology” I explained, “Suffolk was actually the college I wanted to attend but my parents wanted me to go to Northeastern and I couldn’t say no when I got accepted,” My voice trailed off with the last words I said.

“I understand, Northeastern is a prestigious school though, I could see why you wouldn’t want to turn it down. You must have been top of your class in high school,” He laughed.

“Maybe” I nodded my head, and looked down at my salad which was untouched. I was going to ask him what he was planning on majoring in but instead he continued by saying, “So now I have to ask, and I don’t mean to impose, but what is a beautiful girl like you doing out, alone, on a Friday night”

“I’m not sure, just walking around the city I guess. I don’t mind being alone,” I said unsure of what to say. He just looked at me. I feared that he would take it farther and of course that’s just what he did.

“So you’re telling me that there isn’t a lucky man in this picture who gets to walk by your side around the city?” He asked. My stomach did about five flips. Matt. It was like that was the sign. I had to call him when I got out of this place.

“It’s complicated,” I said softly as thoughts raced through my mind.

“Oh so there is a lucky man?” He asked slyly. It was starting to get annoying. In all honesty this waiter was attractive and he seemed like a decent guy who wanted some company. I did not want his company though. I wanted Matt’s company. I wanted Matt. That was all.
“Yes, there is actually,” I stated and got up, “I have to go, it was really nice talking to you.” I turned on my heels and headed for the door.

“You as well,” He shouted from over the bar.

“Thank you!” I shouted back as I walked out the door. I really couldn’t thank that waiter enough. He was the sign. It was time to clear the air between Matt and I. I ran toward the nearest T Station, which was right by the New England aquarium, which was located on yet again another Wharf.

I barley thought about the actions as I was about to make. I rarely ever did things like this either. This was a complete exception.

I pulled out my phone and went to Matt's contact. My finger hovered over the call button, but before I allowed myself to think for too long I pressed it. My stomach flipped with each ring.

"Hello?" A voice that sounded like Jimmy's answered.

"Jimmy?" I asked.

"Hey Morgan!" He said with an undecided tone.

"Hey, can I talk to Matt?" I asked nervously. It felt like an eternity before he answered. I paced along the wharf and raked one of my hands through my hair.

"Morgan, I would love to say yes because I know you and Matt really need to fix things but I can't," He stated slowly.

"Why can't you?" I asked with an apparent annoyance in my tone.

"Something terrible has happened"
