Promises Broken and Words Left Unspoken

Funeral Blues

Brian’s P.O.V
We were currently waiting for Madi, Tyler and Lea before we leave to the funeral. I decided to bring Amy along so my thoughts wouldn’t wonder. We had been invited by her father and I really don’t get why we’re waiting, we’re not even in the same car. I looked up as Lea and Tyler walked out. He was in black dress pants and a black dress shirt while she was in a black dress. She was also wearing a black jacket knowing it would get chilly.

Madi stepped out a moment later and locked the door behind her. She was in a black dress that ended at her knees, and was wearing black strappy shoes and a hoodie. She tucked her hair behind her ears and handed Ty her keys before walking to the passenger side of her lancer. Ty got in the drivers seat and Lea in the back and then we followed their car to the funeral home.

When we got there, Madi held Ty’s hand tightly and walked into the funeral home with my family close behind. When I walked in I noticed Matt, Jimmy, Val and Zacky’s families had been invited as well. Amy smiled softly at me as we walked over hand in hand. I looked up as Madi walked past everyone and up to the coffin, and she closed her eyes before resting her hand lightly on the coffin.

Val bit her lip nervously, I can tell she felt bad for being a bitch and was slightly jealous when Lea hugged Madi tight. After a little bit of time of people paying their respects and walking up to Madi and apologizing, everyone was sent out to go to the church for mass. I watched as Val walked over to apologize quietly. Madi nodded stiffly and looked away, I frowned slightly as Val walked back over sad.

We made our way into the church room and took a seat and listened to the priest speak about Jake and his life. And after what seemed like forever, after other people spoke about him, we watched in anticipation as Madi walked up. I bit back a moan as I felt Amy’s lips on my neck. “Amy stop…y…your parents,” I stuttered quietly. She nodded and smiled sweetly. I looked her up and down finally realizing that she was wearing…a revealing dress, to put it lightly.

“My brother was more than just a brother,” Madi’s voice was quiet and I could hear the hurt behind it. “He was my best friend and my savior. Whenever things got bad, he was always the first one there to calm me down and help me out. He kept me company when I was lonely and cheered me up when I was sad. He kept me sane when I thought my whole world would come crashing down,” she laughed lifelessly as she went to continue. “I…I’m sorry…I can’t do this,” she whispered as tears began to fall down her cheeks. She walked down to Ty and let him pull her to his chest.

The priest explained that we were headed to the cemetery and the gravesite. Madi held Ty’s hand tightly as we walked out to the cars and followed the hearse. We got to the cemetery and walked up for our final goodbyes. I watched as Lea and Ty comforted her. I still couldn’t understand why I felt jealous every time he managed to calm her down. She clutched his hand in both of hers tightly as the casket was lowered into the ground. Everyone was then asked to leave and go to the lunch in thing at two. Madi sighed before mumbling something in Ty’s ear and walking to the car with him and Lea.

Matt walked up to me with Jimmy and Val in toe. “Wanna drive with us to the place? Zack’s going to ride with his parents and you can’t possibly like being stuck in between Brent and McKenna,” he reasoned. I nodded and walked over and told my parents that Amy and I would be riding with Matt, Val and Jimmy. When we got in the car, Matt started it up and turned the radio on low as we followed the directions to get to the restaurant.

When we got there the first thing I noticed was Tyler was standing outside taking a smoke. We walked up, unsure of what room in the restaurant to go to. “Let me guess…you want me to show you to the room?” he asked before stubbing out the cigarette and flicking the cigarette butt. Matt nodded and Ty waved over our parents and such before walking in and leading us to the room set aside with Amy. I noticed Madi talking to Lea quietly.

When the waiter came in and took everyone’s orders, Amy waved him over and asked him something, before smiling as he nodded. Amy leaned over and whispered in my ear. “Sorry, I wanted to make sure he made mine a diet soda, cause last time I had one with sugar…it made me sick,” she kissed my cheek lightly before kissing my lips.

“Can’t have that,” I stated with a small smile, confused because she normally ordered regular drinks. She blushed and nodded. The waiter came back with everyone’s drinks and placed Madi’s in front of her last with a sympathetic smile. Amy smiled softly as she sipped her diet coke. Madi smiled at the waiter and I could sense her annoyance as she took a sip of her drink. She turned to Lea and said something softly.

“You’re just being silly Madi. I promise, it’s all in your head,” Madi sighed before agreeing and sipping more of her drink. Amy mumbled something I didn’t catch, and went back to playing with her hands. I smiled at her softly and grabbed her hand in mine. Madi nodded as the waiter asked her about the refill and took her glass before coming back a few minutes later. She took it from him and smiled softly before taking a sip and frowning before shaking her head and putting the drink on the table. She was talking to Lea and smiling a bit.

As the food came Madi smiled softly and ate quietly. Amy ate her salad smiling about something unknown to me. I poked at the food on my plate, not feeling hungry. I still felt bad about saying the things I said to her. Madi finished her drink and rolled her eyes as the waiter offered her another one. She just sighed and nodded as he handed it to her. Amy chose that moment to excuse herself to the bathroom. I watched as she walked up to the waiter and spoke to him quietly, probably about a refill for her diet soda. I looked up to see Lea patting Madi’s shoulder in a reassuring manner as Madi sipped at her drink still making a face.

I decided to get some fresh air…and smoke a cigarette. Everyone was now moving around anyways, and my parents, Jimmy’s parents, and Zacky’s parents were leaving. As were Jimmy and Lea, I think she had mentioned something about packing. I followed the small group out to spend some time alone and smoke a cigarette.

I stared at the clouds and made my way back towards the room, I barely noticed that I had been out there forty minutes. I walked up to see Tyler throwing darts at the dart machine and Amy was talking on her cell phone. Matt, Val, and Zacky were talking in the corner, I walked over to them and caught up on what we were going to be working on and where we were gonna be performing. I smiled at Val thankfully as Amy stood up and kissed my cheek before mumbling something about the restroom. I nodded and she walked out, I walked out of the room to go check out the rest of the restaurant since I was bored.

I noticed Amy walking back with a drink. I continued my walk around as I let my thoughts finally catch up with me. Why had I doubted her words? Why am I getting so jealous when she hangs out with her friend? Why are these thoughts plaguing me? I got over her leaving a long time ago. I was brought out of my thoughts when someone bumped into me. I went to apologize but the person’s voice cut me off.

“Sorry,” she slurred. I looked down and met the bright blue eyes that haunt my dreams. I frowned as she stumbled a bit. I mean I knew she was sad but…alcohol?

“So this is how you deal with grief? You get drunk?” I asked her bitterly. She looked up at me confused and hiccuped quietly.

“What do you mean? I’ve had Pepsi….except for the,” she hiccuped before continuing. “Except for the two drinks Amy gave me after that,” She closed her eyes for a moment. “Ty’s gonna be mad,” she slurred softly before looking at the ground.

“You really expect me to believe you’re this plastered from a few Pepsis? And I doubt Amy would give you anything with alcohol in it,” I unintentionally snapped at her. She looked up as tears formed in her eyes.

“I…I told Lea that…they didn’t taste right…she said it was all in my head,” Madi mumbled in a tearful voice as she looked at the ground. She wiped at her eyes as more tears came to her eyes. “The…then Amy came and sa…said the waiter was creepy and that she didn’t trust him, and she brought me the one drink,” she slurred before biting her lip and wiping at her eyes again.

“Wait…” it took me a minute but I think I finally understood why she wasn’t aware of what was going on. “Have you ever been drunk before?” she shook her head no.

“Ty’s gonna be mad,” she cried softly. “I…I gotta go,” she sniffled before wiping at her eyes and stumbling towards the women’s restroom. I bit my lip before gently grabbing her arm.

“Wait Madi…Kaylee, are you okay?” she shook her head no and went to walk away, but I pulled her to my chest and hugged her tightly as she began to cry. “I’m sorry,” I whispered to her as I rubbed her back lightly. "I am so, so sorry."

“I…Ty has…we both have issues…with alc…alcohol. I don’t want him to be mad,” Madi whispered in a cracked voice. I nodded but the next thing I did, shocked even me.

“Text him…tell him to take your car and go home for the night. Then you can stay at my house for the night. My parents are taking Brent and McKenna to some party thing and will be there for the night,” Madi looked up at me shocked before shaking her head no.

“My cell phone is back in my,” she paused as she thought and blushed out of embarrassment. I chuckled softly at her reaction before nodding for her to continue. “bag...In the other room,” she mumbled.

I nodded before speaking up. “Wait here,” she nodded and leaned against the wall as I made my way back to the room. I made sure no one was looking as I looked through her bag and found her cell. I walked back out before asking. “What’s a normal text for you to send when you want him to leave and say you’ll meet him at your house later?” I asked.

“I tell him I wanna be alone. And that he should go home and stay with his family for the night,” she bit her lip before speaking up again. “Why?” I typed up a text and showed it to her before sending it after she nodded. I walked back in and made an excuse of me not feeling well. I walked back out to the hallway and took her hand. “Come on Madi,” I whispered.

“Why are you being so nice to me?” she slurred looking me in the eye.

“To make up for being an ass to you before…and for giving away your locket. And for not believing you when you said you would come back.” She nodded slightly and looked down at the floor. She stumbled behind me quietly.
