Chapter 8
Maddie just stood at the door with her mouth hanging open.
“Err… what?” she asked quietly
“I’m really sorry, honestly I am. I just think at the moment it means more to you than it does to me.” He told her bluntly as he looked down at the floor, avoiding her heartbroken gaze.
“Please don’t leave me like this.” She replied pathetically. He reached out his hand before hesitating and dropping it back to his side again. He sighed, mumbled something unintelligible before turning and walking back down the corridor.
Maddie was still stood there when she heard his car pull away, a minute or so later, tears rolling down her face. She then closed the door softly and grabbed her phone, she decided to call Val. It went straight to voicemail; she then sat down. She felt numb, they hadn’t been together more than a month but she really thought he felt the same way, now she just felt stupid for getting so emotionally invested; stupid and heartbroken. Maddie knew she couldn’t be alone tonight; she wanted to go after Matt but didn’t want to look pathetic. There was only one other person’s house she knew. She grabbed her keys, locked up and drove into the darkness.
She pulled into the driveway, and then walked out of the car and up to the front door before ringing the bell. The door opened and Zacky was stood there, he looked puzzled until he saw her face, tear stained and puffy from crying.
“Oh my God, what’s wrong?” He said, startled.
“Can I just come in please.” Maddie replied, her voice cracking. He stood aside and ushered her in. “I-I would’ve called but I don’t have your number.”
“No it’s fine, it’s fine, just tell me what’s wrong.” He asked anxiously.
“Matt just dumped me, but he didn’t say anything about why and he didn’t even look at me. I don’t think he ever cared at all.” She said, bursting into tears.
“Aww babe, I don’t know what to say, we all thought he was crazy about you.” He replied, pulling her into a tight hug.
“So did I!” she bawled, crying into his shirt, “I’m such an idiot!”
“No you’re not, you’re awesome, come and sit down. She followed him over to the couch and he held her hands as they sat down.
“I feel like such an idiot.” She said again dejectedly.
“Mads look at me.” Zack said, tilting her chin up. “You are not an idiot, I don’t know what the hell’s got into Matt but it’s his loss. You’re an amazing girl.” It was then Maddie realized how close their faces had become while they were talking. Zack stared at her, and began moving his face closer to hers until their lips met for a brief second before she pulled away.
“I’m, err, really tired so I’m going to bed now.” She stammered, standing and rushing off to the nearest door.
“No wait.” He said, she ignored him and opened the door. “That’s a closet.”
“Oh.” She muttered, embarrassed, as she went to the next door, opened it, saw it was a bedroom and walked in. “Night.”
“Goodnight.” He said softly. She closed the door and leaned with her back against it, trying to comprehend what had just happened.
