Sweet Realese
I stood at the side of the road and stared at the solid white building for what seemed like decades.It felt weird to be on the opposite of the fence for once instead of on the inside.
I watched as a group of patients stared up the clouds and rocked back and forth. I shook my head and giggled. It was wrong. I cleared my throat and looked to the top window of the building. My heart sank when I caught eyes with my best friend, Dillion. His long black bangs flowing in front of his pale blue eyes. His pale skin glaring with the sun. I forced back tears as I watched him as he grasped the metal bars in front of the window helplessly. I lifted my hand and waved for a moment. He did not return the wave. Instead he lingered for one more moment, and then turned away.
My tears flowed down my face now. He was hurt I was leaving. But I was 18 now and able to sign myself out when I wanted. After growing up here, it was time to go. My only wish was to take Dillion with me, but I was not family or married to him, so I could do nothing.
I lingered by the fence for a few more moments hoping he would return. After realizing he was not coming back,I turned on my heeland began to walk away.
I pulled my ipod from my pocket and shoved the headphones in my ear. The loud music greeted my ears as I turned the volume full blast. I had befriended a nurse during my time in the hospital and he had managed to retrieve an old used ipod and downloaded music for me. It came in handy the many nights when patients would run the halls screaming.
I pulled a pack of cigarettes (that the nurse also got for me) and place a cigarette in between my lips. Just as I was lighting the cigarette and inhaling the toxicfumes, I felt the earbud from my left ear being forcefully ripped from my ear.
“Your gonna go deaf!” a chuckling male voice said.
In pure shock and reaction my hands went flinging in defense and the cigarette went flying from my mouth.
“OW GOD DAMN IT!” the male voice shouted angrily.
“Serves you right, sneaking up on me.” I say in a sarcastic tone looking up to the man that the voice belonged to. He was gorgeous. Spiked black hair. Smooth pale skin. Beautiful deep chocolate brown eyes. He looked like something straight out of a punk magazine, and I had to do everything from melting to the ground.
“Well its your fault really. Walking in the middle of the road with music blaring loudly in your ears. I honked at you twice but clearly you could not hear me. Now here we are.” He says brushing the cigarette ashes from his shirt. He then looks down at his feet and stomps the burning cigarette out and then looks back to me. My heart fluttered as we locked gazes.
“Im Brian.” He says extending his hand outward for me to take.
I stared at his hand and then back to his eyes and then back to his hand for a moment. I smiled and took his hand.
“Amaryllis.” I say shyly.
“Like the flower.” He says through a chuckle. He squeezed my hand tightly and then let it go. I had to stop myself from sighing once he did so.
“Yes, like the flower.” I say rolling my eyes.
“What are you doing out here, walking around in the middle of nowhere. Its dangerous.” He asks sternly.
“Eww, you sound like my father.” I say as I start to walk away.
“Is that where you are headed? Home?”
I stopped walking suddenly and took a deep breath. Home. The hospital had been my home for the last 14 years. I had no home to go too.
“No.” I say as I begin to walk again.
“Where are you headed?” he asked. Now his questions are beginning to annoy me. He just couldn’t take a hint.
“Where are you headed?” I said returning the question.
“California.” He says running up to me. “Would you like a ride to where your going?”
I stopped walking once again and looked up to the stranger. He was smiling a rather brilliant smile. Somehow I didn’t think this guy would take no for an answer.
“Can you take me to California?” I asked curiously.
“Sure.” He said.
“Then yes, you can give me a ride.”
“Excellent.”
He runs back to his car and cranks it up and drives it slowly up to where I was standing and rolled down the windows. “Hop in.” he says and winks at me.
I hesitantly placed my hand on the car door handle as I looked back down the road to the hospital. I could still faintly make out the building and the rocking patients. I pictured Dillion returning to the window and watching me as I climbed into the car. I would miss him deeply, but I needed to get away from this hell.
I slammed the door behind me as I climbed in. I put on my seatbelt and crossed my ankles as we took off down the road.
I pulled my cigarettes once again and put a cigarette between my lips and lite it up and inhaledthe toxic fumes once again.
“Can I get one of those?” he asked eyeing the cigarette hanging from my lips.
I nodded and placed my hand in my pocket and pull the cigarettes from my pocket once again. My hospital band fell from my pocket and I quickly retrieved it and shoved it back into my pocket. My cheeks flushed a dark red as I handed him a cigarette and lit it for him.
“Thank you.” He winked.
I nodded and looked out the window. The car grew awkwardly silent as I continued to stare and finish my cigarette. After tossing the butt out the window I looked around the car and spied several guitar cases. I smirked and looked over to him.
His face seemed stern and concentrative as he too flicked his butt out the window and placed both hands on the wheel.
“So what are you some kind of traveling guitar player?” I asked.
“Something like that.” He said flashing a smile with glistening white teeth.
“Hmm” I say looking back out the window.
I didn’t know where this adventure would take me. But I knew the farther away from here I could get, the better.
