Worlds Apart

Separate Ways

Matt had never been into the whole idea of sleeping around on the road. Groupies didn't appeal to him as much as they seemed to with other rock stars that lived by the "sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll" rule. Sure, it had always been tempting when a scantily clad chick with a smoking hot body had offered whatever he wanted on a plate to him, but he'd always refrained and kept an impressive amount of self-control. There'd been the odd occasion in the earlier days when he'd really needed it and he'd bedded a couple of random women, but they'd been few and far between over the years and whenever it happened, he always felt guilty afterwards.

He wasn't promiscuous. He didn't like having sex just because he could. He loved his wife and, as difficult as it was, he preferred to wait it out and become best friends with his right hand until it was time to go home.

The sex was always better when they'd been apart. Though it was difficult spending so much time away from each other, it had been the one thing that had kept the relationship fresh and exciting more than anything else over the years. There was nothing better than letting the sexual frustration build up as the days passed by and then finally getting their hands on one another when he got home. There wasn't a room in the house they didn't touch.

But now... there was no marriage to go home to. Val had said she couldn't take it anymore. After years and years of them being apart for months at a time while he was on the road and she sat at home missing him, she'd had enough. She'd given him an ultimatum: it was her, or the band. He'd picked the band.

He wasn't going to give up his life-long dream for anybody, or anything. As much as he loved Val, he couldn't take the paranoia and the accusations any longer. She'd always suspected he'd been sleeping with groupies while he was on the road and had told him many a time that if he'd told her about it and been honest, she wouldn't have minded. She understood that, as a man, he had his needs, and she was willing to let the occasional one-night stand slide. As much as he told her that he HADN'T, she didn't believe him... even though, most of time, he was being honest.

In a way, he was glad that she'd been the one to end it. He was close to doing it himself, but didn't want to be a heartbreaker. He loved the woman, but he'd had enough of her pointing the finger at him when he'd done no wrong, just like she'd had enough of him being away. She was ready to settle down and start a family, he wasn't ready to give up on his band and his fans. They had so much in common, and yet they were both so different. In the end, it had been a mutual agreement, though signing those divorce papers was one of the hardest things he'd ever had to do in his life.

He knew, deep down, however, that it had to be done. The relationship had run its course and if they'd forcefully kept it alive with all of the underlying tension and problems, they'd have both ended up going crazy. It had become too destructive for either of them to handle. They'd spent over half of their lives together, but they couldn't take it any further. It was time to make a change. He had to let her go.

Notes
