Thicker Than Water

Cheesy

Casey was getting a migraine. She started to massage her temples with her forefingers, rubbing in circular motions. This was a common occurrence, but with all the wedding plans, they were becoming more and more frequent.

She was sitting in the passenger’s seat next to Harvey; together they were going to pick out their cake and other goodies for the reception.

“Another headache?” he asked, looking between her and the road.

“Yeah, but I think it’s a stress headache this time.”

“You should probably get it checked out, Case. Don’t want to get a headache during the ceremony.”

They smiled at each other, excitement shining in their eyes at the thought of spending the rest of their lives together.

“I’ll call Dr. Collins tomorrow and set up an appointment.”

Harvey reached for her hand and gave it a loving squeeze. Once they pulled up to the bakery, they walked in hand in hand. Harvey wasn't as excited to be planning the wedding as she was, but Casey wanted his input for their wedding; and as much as he was flattered, he didn't care. He noticed Casey had stopped in her step and when he looked back at her, he saw that she was staring at the woman behind the counter with a terrified look on her face.

“What is it, babe?”

She shook her head and plastered a smile on her face, but he could see right through her.

“Welcome to The Cupcake Factory, how can I help – Casey, hi!”

“Hey, Nikki,” Casey waved awkwardly to her. “how’s it going?”

“Can’t complain,” A dopey smile appeared on her face as she thought of something. Harvey could tell Casey was uncomfortable, but he didn’t know why. He rubbed the small of her back to soothe her.

“That’s great! Oh, this is my fiancé, Harvey.” He held his hand out to Nikki politely.

“It’s nice to officially meet you; talk about your wedding is huge around here. It’s an honor to be making your wedding cake.”

“Let’s get started, shall we?” Harvey asked, leading Casey to the table as soon as Nikki walked to the back.

“What was that about?”

Casey shook her head. “I’ll explain later.”

He accepted her answer. Nikki walked back out towards them shortly after that, a tray holding multiple plates of cake flavors in her hands.

When the couple returned home, Casey went straight to the medicine cabinet and took out her migraine pills. She shook three out of the bottle and fixed a glass of water before popping them in her mouth and swallowing them down with the refreshing liquid.

“How many was that?” Harvey asked, leaning against the door frame with his arms crossed over his chest. He had a disapproving look on his handsome face.

“Just three,”

“Three? Isn't that two too many?”

“I know what I’m doing, okay?”

She turned to him and placed her hands on his hips. Eventually he melted into her grasp and uncrossed his arms to wrap them around her waist, pulling her closer to lean a kiss on her temple.

“I do believe you own me an explanation about earlier.”

Casey sighed and walked into her bedroom and sat on the bed. He mimicked her actions, turning himself to face her. He placed his hand on her thigh, rubbing small circles on it.

“Nikki is Matt’s wife.”

She played with her hands, looking down at them to keep her from facing him. She hated to seem so weak in front of Harvey, but he was the only one that really understood her. He knew everything that happened between her and Matt, and he was there to put her back together again when Matt shattered her in a way she knew would have thought her brother was capable of.

“It’s just that…” She let out a deep breath. “the less Matt knows about what’s going on in my life the better. I just don’t trust him at all and now Nikki is going to tell him about us coming in and I’m just stressed out.”

Harvey pulled her to face him and when she did, he smiled at her. “Everything is going to work out, babe. I love you more than anything, and nothing is going to get in the way of us getting married. Forget about Matt and just focus on us. He’s never going to hurt you anymore because I won’t let him near you.”

Tears filled Casey’s eyes, but she blinked them back. She surprised Harvey when she threw her arms around his neck, but the surprise wore off quickly. He returned the hug, and pulled back enough to catch her mouth with his.

“You’re too good to me. I don’t deserve you,”

“Don’t say things that aren’t true. I don’t deserve someone as beautiful as you; inside and out. You’re sweet and caring and you take care of me. I still can’t believe you said yes to me. Sometimes I wonder if this is just some amazing dream.”

Casey laughed. “Okay cheese-ball.” She playfully pushed on his shoulder, which resulting in him dramatically falling backwards on the bed as he pulled her with him. She landed on his chest.

“I love you,”

He leaned up to kiss her. “I love you, more.”
