Thicker Than Water

Prologue

“In local news, Harvey Specter and his fiancée Casey Sanders have chosen a church for their wedding; it seems to be all the rave in this suburban town in California. The day of their wedding, the whole street is going to be blocked off, and security standing on every corner! It’s an invite only, so don’t even try to show up without one!”

Matt muted the TV to answer his phone. Brian’s name was blinking on the screen and he knew that he was going to tell him about what was just on the news.

“Hey man, what’s up?” Excitement ran through Brian’s voice, causing Matt to cringe and hold the phone away from his ear. “Did you hear about Casey’s wedding?”

“Yeah,” he mumbled uninterested. “just watched it on the news, actually.”

Brian clicked his tongue at him. “Did you get your invitation?”

Matt furrowed his brow, glaring at his feet which were propped up on the coffee table. “No, not yet,”

“Hmm, that’s strange. The wedding is in three months.”

“How come you know so much about her wedding?” Matt asked, getting annoyed with Brian.

Brian’s response was cut short when Matt’s phone beeped, letting him know he had another call waiting. His mother was trying to get through to him and he sighed. He didn’t really want to talk to her either, but it would be better than Brian’s constant reminders of how out of touch he was with his sister.

“Fuck, sorry Bri.” Matt cut him off. “Mom’s on the other line.”

“Oh alright, tell her I said ‘hi’.” The dial tone came on after that and Matt flipped to the other call.

“Hey Mom,”

“Matthew, sweetheart,” Her voice floated through his ear and he smiled. “How are you, Honey?”

“I’m alright,” He threw an arm behind his head to get more comfortable. “the band is taking a break so I’m catching up on a few things in my free time. How are you, Mom?”

“I’m fine, dear.” He could hear some noises in the background. “just sitting here with Casey going over some more wedding details.”

It took everything in him not to groan. “How is she, by the way?”

“She’s fine, she’s good. Casey’s really excited about the wedding. Harvey seems nice; I think he’ll be good for her. Would you like to talk to her?”

“What? Oh, no. I’m alright; just tell her I said ‘hey’ or something. Hey, Mom? Do you have my invitation?”

Even though Matt couldn’t see it, Kim shifted uncomfortably in her chair. She wanted her children to get along and she knew that they had a rough childhood with her divorce, but she knew she couldn’t make them talk to each other, even if she wanted to. “Well Matt, to be honest…” She cleared her throat. “Casey doesn’t have one for you. I tried to tell her, but she fought me hard on it. I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

“Oh,” The realization of the situation dawned on him. “That’s alright.”

Tension began filling the silence between them and Matt could hear his sister in the background, talking to someone about her dress. He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Hey Mom, I’ll call you back later.”

“Okay Matt,” She hung up after they exchanged ‘I love you’ and Matt tossed his phone away from him.

He leaned his head back and groaned; his eyes shut in irritation. Whither they got along or not, Casey was his sister and she should want him to be there. Getting married is a big deal; he had sent her an invitation to his wedding, after all. Even though she showed up late and they fought during the reception, he was still glad she came.

He rolled his eyes, figuring the only way that this was going to be settled was if he took matters into his own hands.
