Friends and Alibis

Chapter 13

The rest of the week seemed to drag on in slow motion and I grew giddier every day, looking forward to Katelyn's arrival.

The day after Zack stayed the night I woke up to an empty apartment but he left a letter and breakfast beside my bed with all the things I liked.

It was now Friday and I had finished my last assignment for next week's issue. I had grown to love my job in this short amount of time. It wasn't really like working. More like discussing with friends about your favourite things and gossip. Lots of gossip. Though I wasn't that keen on gossiping I had to admit that especially Alexis made my ears perk up more than just a few times. All in all, it was a fun job and I was glad that I left Seattle. There I wouldn't have gotten a job like this. And the guys were a wonderful addition.

I drove home and went inside to prepare my apartment for Katelyn's arrival on Saturday. I hadn't planned for her to meet the guys before Sunday so she could calm her very obnoxious inner fan-girl down, so I had plenty of time arranging everything.

I was just in the middle of cleaning the kitchen when the door bell rang.

I put the rag down and went to open the door to whoever was outside.

"May!" I was brought into a bone crushing hug that made me lose my balance which resulted in the both of us tumbling to the floor in a fit of laughter.

"Kate, what are you doing here already?" I asked, still on the floor and laughing with her on top of me. .

"I-.. Please don't be mad at me." She said and she pulled herself upwards so she could look me in the eyes.

“Katelyn Marie Smith, what did you do? Don't tell me you set the flat on fire again! Oh god no, you're pregnant! Who's the dad?-" I rambled, my eyes getting wide with fear. She had actually set our flat in Seattle on fire once but we were lucky and she didn't do much damage to it. Not yet, at least.

"No, no! Oh god…" She said and I breathed a sigh of relief. "I somewhat quit college." She smiled sheepishly at me but I couldn't help but stare at here in disbelief with my eyes wide open.

"Why, I thought..." I started but Katelyn cut me off, as she always did.

"I didn't want to anymore. May, my life is boring, I want to travel and be involved in adventures and I can't do that when college takes up my whole time." She scrambled off me and pouted. We both sat criss-cross on the floor, facing each other.

"I know but how will you pay for all that. Because I know for a fact that your parents won't." I raised my eyebrows at her.
'"Ugh, I know. I just thought... Maybe I could live here for a while?" She asked with an uneasy smile and I could tell she felt uncomfortable. Katelyn wasn't someone to usually ask for help, she was too proud for that.

I pretended to think about it though I already knew my answer. Of course I would let my best friend live with me.

"Honey, you can live here as long as you want." I told her and brought her into a hug and she opened her mouth to thank me when the sound of someone knocking and a voice interrupted us.

"Knock, knock!" We both snapped our attention to the door that was still open from Kate's attack. Brian stood in the door way and I could feel Katelyn's breath hitch in her throat. It was as if he had some sort of sensor for fan girls.

But I had some sort of idea, a stupid one at that but fun for me and embarrassing for Kate.

In one swift move I had Katelyn in a gentle but firm headlock and moved as if she was struggling to break free when in reality she was laying limp in my arms, probably overwhelmed and confused with what was happening.

"Brian! Run! Crazy fan-girl on the loose!! Run for your life! Ruuuun!" I yelled over-dramatically which earned me a small laugh from Brian and a full on scowl from Kate for embarrassing her in front of one of her “gods”.

"Was that really necessary?" She huffed in annoyance. I let her go and shrugged.

"It sounded better in my head." I said matter-of-fact-ly.

"Riiight. So." Brian chimed in, his eyes darting from me to Kate and back again. "Do you mind if I take the crazy fan-girl out for a drink?"

"Smooth, Haner. Don't be out too late. I want to talk with my best friend, too, without her being completely out of it."

"Won't happen." He mock saluted me. "Well, come on." He smirked at Kate who I just then noticed sitting there with her mouth open and her eyes the size of baseballs.

"Well, go on then." I nudged her and started laughing when she tried to stand up in such a rush that she nearly fell over again. She grabbed her jacket and purse and turned to me with the biggest grin I had ever seen on her face.

"I love you!" She mouthed and left the apartment, her arm linked with Brian's.

"Use protection!" I yelled after them which made Brian laugh and I could tell, even though I only saw Katelyn's back, that her face was flushing in the brightest red known to mankind.
