How To Save A Life.

Chapter Sixty-Five

It was a relatively short drive from the hospital to the old childhood park. I remember this place pretty clearly, Shadz and I ran this place when we were young. Everyone feared me because of my unrivaled height, and everyone feared Matty because he's just a creepy and dark character. Speaking of creepy and dark, this park looks eery at night. It's almost two in the morning, but I could swear that I saw someone on the swing set in the distance. But that can't be possible, who gets a craving to swing at two in the morning? Someone batshit crazy, that's who. But as I got closer, I realized that my eyes weren't wrong. Someone was sitting alone on the swing set. It was Matty.
I approached him with great caution. Hopefully he's aware that I was in no way involved In the plan to kill his girl.
“Matty, is that you?” I asked, trying to sound casual. He looked up and gave me a small smile.
“Hey Jimbo. What brings you to the park at 2:06AM?” He asked. I just shrugged, it's not like I could tell him my actual reason for coming, not yet.
“I dunno. This place just takes me back, ya know? The good old days. Man, we ran this place when we were like ten.” I said, remembering. Matty nodded and replied,
“I can still hear Brian's mom yelling for him.” I laughed and then we both did our impression of Mrs. Haner
“BRIIIIIANN!” We both shouted, laughing. I patted his back. I figured now I had him in a good enough place to ask about the night's events.
“Matty...listen. I've been told you did some things tonight that don't sound like the normal you. What's going on?” I asked consolingly. Maybe all Matty needed was someone to talk to, a friend. And I would happily be that guy. Matty sighed and replied,
“Listen, Jimmy. I don't know what they've told you. But I did what I did for revenge. I wanted to avenge my love's death and I feel..almost successful.”
“Almost?” I asked.
“Almost because I didn't successfully kill anyone. I did come pretty close with Lucy though..but I only stabbed her four times. Should've gone with fifty, am I right bro?” He asked, trying to make a joke. I tried to laugh, but Lucy is my friend. But so is Matty. I don't even know, everyone's just gone crazy.
“I think you, Zacky, and Brian need to work things out. You and Zacky live together, remember?” I asked.
“Not if I kick him out..” Matty mumbled under his breath. I punched his arm. “Oww!” He exclaimed.
“You are not kicking Zacky out! You've known each other since seventh grade. You guys are best friends!” I said.
“You know that? I thought we were. But then he and his best friend Brian decided to go kill my girlfriend! Like, how twisted and screwed up is that?! If I ever do forgive them, it's going to take time.” Matty argued. I knew this was true. I replied,
“Look, I know it will take time. Something like this obviously will never, ever be forgotten. But what about the band, man? What about Johnny and I? Well, I could find a job, but as Brian says, the bass guitar has no point.” Matty laughed a little at the memory of Brian and Johnny arguing.
“See? You're laughing. You know we're your five favorite people in the world. Things just have to get better. This is just a rough patch.” I said. Matty chuckled and replied,
“Leave it to us to go through a “rough patch” that involves a murder, a stabbing, and a shooting.” I laughed at this and said,
“See? We'll be making jokes about this before you know it.” I wasn't one hundred percent sure about that, but it didn't matter. I think I may have fixed Matty. Once again, it's Uncle Jimmy here to save the day.
“So you all good now?” I asked Matty. He nodded and replied,
“I think so.” I know it's going to take a while, but things are going to get better.
“Hey, can I ask you one more thing?” I asked nervously. I knew I'd have to tread lightly on this subject, but the body had been my original reason for coming here.
“Sure. What is it?” Matty asked.
“Any idea where the body is?” I asked nervously. I put my hand behind my head, I only ever do this when I'm nervous about something, and this barely ever happens. Matty just stopped. I instantly regret asking, but I needed to know.
“Let's just say it's taken care of..” Matty trailed. He sounded kind of creepy.
“Oh, alright...I just wanted to make sure no one would find it, you know?” I asked, trying to make things sound normal again.
“Trust me, no one will ever find it.” He said, sounding creepy again. Now there was a new silence. Matty was creeping me out and I didn't want to hear anymore. I broke the silence by asking,
“You wanna go meet your new niece and nephew?” Matty looked up and smiled. He asked,
“Mia had her babies? That's nice. But..I doubt they'll ever be referring to me as an Uncle..” He sounded upset about it. I sighed and confessed,
“Alright man, it's honesty time. They're not mad at you, they're more scared. Scared of whatever crazy thing you'll decide to do next.” Matty seemed to expect this.
“I know I went off the deep end for a little bit there, but I feel better. I feel like I've gotten my revenge and now I just want everything to go back to the way things were before any of this crazy stuff started happening.” He replied. Matty sounded guilty for his crimes, and I'm sure Zacky and Brian feel the same.
“I'm sure the guys feel the same way. No one has liked all this scary drama. Let's just go see them, exchange some apologies and go from there, okay?” I asked.
“Do you think it will work?” Matty asked, looking up at me. I placed my hand on his shoulder and replied,
“I know it will.” Matty smiled and we got up and began to walk back to my car. He slid into the passenger seat and I drove us both back to the hospital. He looked nervous as we began to walk through the maternity wing of the hospital. I found their room, 19B, and walked inside.
Brian greeted me with a smile, but didn't seem too enthusiastic about my guest.
“What do you want?” He asked Matty. Matty looked to the floor, gained some courage and then answered,
“I just came to congratulate you guys. How're you feeling, Mia?” He asked. Mia scoffed and replied,
“I'd be doing a lot better if Brian wasn't sitting here in a wheelchair with a bullet wound in his gut, but other than that? Just peachy.” Matty was not about to tolerate her sass. He said,
“You know, if your man over here didn't go around killing people, he wouldn't be in the position he's in now. You're real lucky I didn't kill him.”
“Lucky? I shouldn't have to be lucky that you didn't kill him! We did you a favor.” Mia said.
“A favor?! How is killing my girlfriend doing me a favor?!” Matty argued.
“Uh, she was a crazy bitch who was all over my fiance's dick.” Mia pointed out.
“Oh. My. God. For the last time, HE came onto HER.”
No he didn't!” Mia fought back.
“Yes he did! Hell, maybe he hooked up with her, got her pregnant too and then killed her to cover it up. Ever consider that?” Matty asked. Mia stopped. She looked to Brian, betrayal in her eyes.
“Brian..that's not true, is it?” She asked. She sounded like she was seconds away from crying.
“Babe, of course it's not true! I love you. I'm engaged to you. I have two kids with you. I'd never do anything with someone crazy like her.”
“Stop calling her that!” Matty demanded.
“Why should I? It was true.” Brian shot back.
“Respect for the dead?” I asked quietly. Everyone became silent. “Look, I didn't bring Matty here so you guys could fight.” I said.
“Then why did you bring him?” Mia asked.
“Because I want to make things right between us. For band's sake.” Matty said.
“For band's sake? Just for band's sake?” Brian asked.
“And for friendship's sake..” Matty added. Brian sighed and looked at Mia. “Look, you guys know you're some of my favorite people in the world. I don't want to lose you. I know we've all made a huge mess, but can we all try to clean it up together?” Matty pleaded. He sounded very sincere. Brian sighed and said,
“Leave it to us to “make a mess” that involves a murder, shooting, and a stabbing.”
“That's exactly what I said!” Matty commented, causing both he and Brian to smile. Things were finally on their way to getting back to normal again. With everything wrapping up here, now all that's left is to convince Lucy and Zacky.
