How To Save A Life.

Chapter Sixty-Three

Mia’s POV*

GIVING BIRTH IS SO MUCH FUN IT’S SO AWESOME THAT I GET TO DO IT TWICE. I wish Brian were here. Zacky has been running back and forth between Lucy and I’s hospital rooms. That’s a pretty sweet thing to do. He tries to be there to hold my hand for contractions, but it’s getting harder for him to do that since my contractions are getting closer together. They’re three minutes apart right now. I feel like I’ve made no progress whatsoever, but the doctor assures me I’m moving along at a good pace. He says my baby will be out soon. Well, one of two anyway.
“Alright, Mrs. Haner, push!” The doctor instructed. While the nearly unbearable pain came with childbirth, it was not going to get old being referred to as Mrs. Haner for the rest of my life. I pushed as hard as I could. “I can see the top of the head! You’re doing great! Don’t stop now, push again!” I kept pushing and pushing. I couldn’t feel anything from my hips down. I was in so much pain. This feels like a period cramp, only times the pain by about four thousand. Birth is gross.
Just then, Zacky came rushing back in.
“Did I miss anything?” He asked. I was about to answer, when I was hit by another contraction, the biggest one yet. He rushed over and grabbed my hand.
“Dear God!!” I cried out in pain. I squeezed Zacky’s hand as hard as I could.
“Oww!” He exclaimed. Still holding my hand, he added, I’m gonna call Jimmy. He’s a lot stronger than I am..” He held the center button on his phone and said, “Siri, new text message to Jimmy: Mia is in labor and she’s gonna squeeze my hand off. Come to the hospital between 15th and South Street. Hurry.”
“Thanks for the love, Zacky.” I replied weakly. He sent me a reassuring smile. I tried to send one back, but I was a little preoccupied.
“The head is out! And so are most of the arms and legs! It shouldn’t be much longer, Mrs. Haner.” The doctor assured. I nodded and gave one final push. That’s when I heard the crying. My baby was crying. The doctor held it up, smiled and said, “Congratulations, Mrs. Haner. You’ve just given birth to a beautiful baby boy.” A boy. I couldn’t believe it. I’ve just given birth to Brian Haner’s son. I just wish he could’ve been here for it..

Brian’s POV*

Oh..what happened? I just woke up and I’m in a hospital bed. I guess it all hadn’t been one big bad dream, Matty really did shoot me. And we really killed Bella. What an insane day.. The only thing that could make this day any crazier would be if Mia gave birth to our twins today. But that’s not possible, she’s not due for another two weeks.
Just then, Zacky burst through the door of my room.
“Brian, you’re awake! You don’t know how happy I am to see you alive! I really was questioning whether or not you’d make it for a while there bro..there was a lot of blood. All over my car, by the way.” He said this all so fast, it was hard to keep up.
“I’m glad to see you alive too. I thought Matty would get us both. Good thing Matty didn’t do anything to you. How’re the girls? Matty didn’t get to them, did he?” I asked. I was honestly scared for both of them. What if he did something twisted and fucked up, like shoot Mia in the stomach or something? Or if something happened to Lucy?
“Well..Lucy’s been stabbed in the chest four times, but I think she’ll be okay. Sorry if I seem out of breath, I’ve been running back and forth between three hospital rooms all night.” Zacky said. I was confused.
“Three rooms? Who else is here? Is it Matty? Did you do something?” I asked. Zacky shook his head, smiled and said,
“It’s not Matty who’s here. It’s Mia.” Why would he smile at this?
“Dude! Is she okay?! She’s alive, right? Why do you look so happy?” I asked. Zacky laughed and answered,
“Yes, she’s alive. So is your son.” My weariness melted into joy.
“My..son?” I asked happily. Zacky nodded. I laughed happily. “I HAVE A SON!” I exclaimed. “Do I have two sons, or is one of them a girl?” I asked.
“I’m not sure, but last time I left she’d just finished pushing out your son.” I was so happy I could hardly contain myself.
“I have to see her. I have to be there for the birth of the second one.” I pushed the button near my bed and it summoned a nurse.
“Mr. Haner, you’re awake. How’re you feeling?” She asked.
“How do I feel? I feel great! I have a son! Can you take me to see him and the birth of my second child, please?” I requested. She smiled and helped me into a wheelchair. She rolled me down to the maternity ward and Zacky directed her to the room. He then left to go check on Lucy. When I got to the room, time stopped. To my surprise, Jimmy was with her too. Her smile was as radiant as ever. Her beautiful eyes shone with tears of happiness to see me alive. I rolled over to her as fast as I could and pecked her lips. They never tasted so sweet.
“Brian!” She exclaimed, “I’m so you’re okay.” She said, smiling as I held her face.
“I’m glad you’re okay too. I hear we have a son?” I asked with a smile.
“We do. What would you like to name him?” She asked happily. I thought for a second and asked jokingly,
“Do we really wanna plague the world with another Brian Elwin Haner?” She laughed, and said,
“I think we need to put part of Zacky’s name in there. He’s really been there for me and he’s your best friend.” I nodded in agreement and said,
“And something for Jimmy. Uncle Jimmy will go nuts when he hears his name in there somewhere.” Mia smiled. We both thought for a moment and then she asked,
“What about Zackary Owen Haner?” I smiled. It had a nice ring to it.
“Is that what you want?” I asked. She nodded. “Than Zackary Owen it is!” I said with a smile. I nearly forgot that Jimmy was in the room too until he asked,
“Did I hear what I think I did? Did you just make your kid’s middle name Owen? That’s my middle name.”
“We know dude,” I said happily. Jimmy nearly bounced to the moon with all his excitement.
“Wow! Thanks guys! Don’t worry, once a girl is dumb enough to let me impregnate her I’ll be sure to name it after you two. Brian Mia Sullivan, sounds good to me!” Jimmy said this very fast. He was too happy to talk. I hope my son keeps the child like love Jimmy has inside of him.
“Oh jeez.” Mia said, clutching her stomach.
“What’s the matter?” I asked.
“Gee, professor. If I had one guess I’d say your second kid wants out.” Jimmy said.
“Thanks for the tip man.” I said sarcastically. He smiled and nodded towards me. I rolled my eyes as Mia reached for my hand. I took it happily. She clutched it very tightly, she was trying to shift all her pain towards me, and I would happily take it. It’s my fault she’s in this pain after all, I’m the one who got her pregnant a week after I met her. I often forget that little detail, because now we’re engaged. It just feels like I’ve been with her all my life. I’m glad I found her, and I’m sure she’s glad she found me too. Even if I am the guy that got her pregnant.
“Push, Mrs. Haner!” The doctor instructed. I smiled. I loved hearing her being referred to as Mrs. Haner, and I’m sure she loved it too. We’re both dorky like that.
Mia was now clutching my hand tight as ever.

“It’ll be okay love, you’re doing great.” I calmly reassured her. She nodded and kept pushing. She grunted in pain and was sweating bullets. I felt so bad. I wish I could take all her pain away.
“Brian!!” She cried out. It seemed like she was reaching her maximum amount of pain that she could stand.
“Yes darling, what do you need?” I asked, trying to sound sympathetic.
“What I need is this baby out of me!” She shouted. I didn’t know what to do, what could I do?
“Would you like us to perform a cesarean section?” The doctor asked. I looked to Mia for the answer.
“A C-Section? Oh hell no. I don’t wanna be sliced open. No thanks.” Mia protested. She continued to push as hard as she could.

***

Two more hours go by and still barely any progress.
“Mrs. Haner, if things don’t change soon, we’re going to have to perform a cesarean section.” The doctor informed. I knew Mia wasn’t excited about it, but she knew it was her only option.
“Alright, I understand..Slice me open, doc.” Mia requested. The thought of Mia being “sliced open” wasn’t a good one, but it had to be done. Now with her consent, the doctor sent for more nurses and tools and such to perform the C-Section.
“Mia, I love you.” I told her as the nurses began rushing in.
“I love you too.” She replied weakly.

I didn’t watch the initial incision, I just couldn’t. I knew she wouldn’t feel it too much, because they numbed her up, but I knew if I watched I just..couldn’t do it. After the incision it was practically over. I didn’t watch much because, 1. I don’t enjoy the sight of blood. 2. I can’t stand the idea of Mia being hurt. the doctor and his assistants practically fished the baby out of Mia. A gross way of putting it, I know. The doctor held the baby up above the makeshift curtain cover he’d set up.
“Mrs. Haner, Mr. Haner, congratulations on your new, beautiful baby girl.” He said. Mia smiled weakly as they began stitching her back up. I felt a tear come to my eye. All this time had finally been worth it. I have a daughter and a son! But most importantly, now I have a family.
