Baby Don't Cry

You know, no one said it's fair.

The doorbell rang and my heart skipped a beat. I got up from the couch, where I'd only been sitting for a few seconds, and made my way to the front door. I opened it and saw a very miserable looking man standing in front of my eyes.

Brian rubbed his forehead and asked if he could come in. I followed him into the kitchen and the first thing he did was to get beer from the fridge. Then he took out a packet of cigarettes from his pocket and started making his way to our back door. I followed him outside and walked behind him all the way to the beach. Then he sat down, lit up a cigarette, blew out the smoke from his lungs and looked at the sand for a moment. I sat down next to him, resting my hand on his thigh.

”What's going on?” I asked quietly.

”I think I've ruined my marriage,” he mumbled quietly, ”And the funny thing is, you're the first person in my mind, even though you're the reason that my wife wants a divorce.”

”Wait, what?”

”I told Michelle that I have feelings for somebody else, too,” he said quietly and looked at me before quickly looking away.

”Why did you do that, Brian?” I asked him.

”I... I don't know. I can't stop thinking about you and it felt wrong to lay in bed with her every night when my mind was somewhere else,” he muttered and sighed.

”What did she say?”

”She just left. She didn't say a word. She probably hates me now and I don't blame her.”

”What are you going to do?”

”I don't know, okay?” he exclaimed, getting frustrated.

I flinched and he looked at me, touching my cheek carefully.

”I'm sorry, I didn't mean to shout. Everything's just... Fucked up,” he said quietly.

”I'm sorry about that, I really am,” I told him, ”But... Don't you think that this was, maybe like, meant to happen?”

”What? No. That's just bullshit, Sophia. Don't say that this was meant to be. Don't say that my marriage was meant to end after a month. Don't say that, Sophia, don't.”

”I don't mean that, but, you know, isn't it funny how we just met? Don't you think that this, us meeting again and getting attracted to each other, was meant to happen?”

”I don't know,” he said with a sigh.

He put out his cigarette and finished the beer, putting the empty bottle away. I leaned my head against his shoulder and he wrapped his arm around me, pulling me close to his side.

”Everything is going to be okay,” I mumbled quietly. He sighed once again and kissed the top of my head.

Brian and I sat there on the beach until it started raining. We ran back inside and sat in the livingroom for a moment, mostly just looking at each other.

”Are you going home tonight?” I asked him quietly.

I watched as he shrugged and leaned his head against a pillow and laid down on his back. I wanted so badly to lay down next to him but couldn't force myself up from the other couch where I was sitting. Maybe he didn't want me to harass him in any way after what had happened with his wife. Maybe he wanted to be on his own for a while.

”I'm definitely not going home, that's for sure,” he told me.

I could hear the sadness in his voice and it made me sad as well. I didn't want to see the people around me all sad and miserable.

”You could stay here,” I suggested quietly.

”I don't know if that's a good idea. It'll just add fuel to the fire if Michelle finds out that I was here...”

”Then why did you come here in the first place?” My voice sounded could and disappointed.

”Because you understand me,” he said and turned his head to me, looking straight into my eyes.

”Because I know I can trust you. You're the kind of person that feels the need to help other people and that's what I need right now.”

”How do you think I can help you?” I asked.

”You can listen. Just being with you makes me feel better,” he admitted and I couldn't help but smile a little. My face fell soon after, though, as I looked at his very serious face.

”Brian?”

”Yeah?”

”Do you still want to be with Michelle, though?” I asked quietly.

”I love her,” he nodded.

”But do you want to be with her?”

”I... I don't know. I didn't want anybody but her but then you showed up and everything changed.”

”I didn't mean to ruin your marriage,” I mumbled quietly and looked down, ”I didn't want to cause any trouble, I'm not like that.”

”I don't blame you, Sophia, not one bit. You didn't do anything wrong,” he told me.

He sat up on the couch and patted the spot next to him. I got up slowly and went to the couch and sat down next to him. He rested his hand on my thigh and I looked down at it as he squeezed it gently.

”I don't think anybody could ever hate you,” he whispered, ”People fall in love with you so easy that nobody can hate you.”

”That isn't true, Brian,” I mumbled quietly.

”Even Jimmy's in love with you now.”

”Is he? I don't think he is. We're just really great friends.”

”Sophia, he's attracted to you. Every single one of your guy friends is attracted to you,” he said and let out a carefree laugh.

Even if for a moment, his thoughts weren't on Michelle and what had happened, and that was a good thing.

”What is it about me that makes people feel that way?” I asked with a smile. He touched my cheek.

”You're beautiful, you care about other people, you're a good listener, you're amazing, Soph. You're lovable,” he told me quietly.

”I believe that everybody is lovable,” I mumbled, ”Once you get to know to them.”

”See? You only see the best in people.”

”But that's not a bad thing, is it?”

”That's what makes you amazing,” he told me.

Brian decided that he was going to go to Jimmy's place for the night. As I stepped out to the front porch, the freezing air reached me and I shivered. It was still raining and completely dark outside.

”Are you going to be okay?” I asked Brian as he pulled on his coat. He nodded.

”Yeah. I just need some time to think about everything and see if this was really worth it,” he said quietly. I nodded and grabbed his hand before squeezing it tightly.

”You know, you can always call me,” I whispered.

He nodded and ruffled my hair before stepping out to the rain and running to his car. I watched as he left, and sighed deeply.

After Brian was gone, I went back inside. I went into the kitchen and made myself a cup of tea before sitting down.

All of a sudden the doorbell rang. I got up and made my way to the door, thinking it was Brian who had forgotten something.

But as I opened the door, instead of seeing him, I saw Michelle. I swallowed hard and looked at her red, puffy eyes for a moment. She looked... She looked like she had been crying all night, which she probably had, and I couldn't help but wonder what she was doing there in the middle of the night, looking like that.

”Was Brian here tonight?” she asked quietly.

I didn't know what to say. What if Brian didn't want me to tell her that he had been there? What if it was the best if she didn't know?

”Answer me!” she exclaimed suddenly and I flinched, taking a step back.

”What are you doing here?” I asked her.

”I'm looking for my husband,” she muttered, ”Was he here or not?”

”I'm not going to lie to you,” I said, ”So yes, yes he was. He needed to talk to somebody.”

”Is it you that he loves? Does he want to end our marriage because of you?” she asked and I froze for a moment.

”I don't think he actually wants to end your marriage. I understood that he's more afraid that you're going to end it,” I said quietly.

”Is he in love with you?” she asked me with extreme pain in her eyes.

I grimaced and looked down.

”I don't think he's in love with me,” I admitted, ”Maybe he just... Maybe he's in love with the person that I was when we were together. He hasn't been around long enough to get to know to me again.”

”But it was you that he was talking about, wasn't it? You're the reason that my marriage failed,” she mumbled.

”I never meant to cause any drama. I'm not that kind of a person,” I told her.

”Are you happy now? Did you get what you wanted?” she asked as tears filled her eyes.

”I'm sorry, Michelle, I never wanted anything like this to happen. I don't know what to do to make things any better – ”

”Stay the hell away from my husband,” she told me, ”Stay away from him. If you have any heart at all, you will do what's right.”

She gave me a death glare before turning around and marching to her car. I watched as she got in and drove away.

I stood on my front porch for a good while, just thinking about what had just happened and how to react to it.

You made me cry!:(:(:(
I loved the story, right from the first chapter. Sofia and Brian's first time, them separating, Brian marrying Michelle, Jimmy having feelings for Sophia, Sophia falling for Brian, Brian getting a divorce and marrying Sophia, the couple losing their child, and finally separating.

Loved it! But ending was really sad:(

I don't think I will, it's been such a long time since I wrote this and getting back to it seems a bit hard to be honest. Sorry! :-(
