Holding on to Nothing

Beach Day

Work wasn’t productive in the slightest bit and incredibly slow all week. Families hadn’t come in as often, and school trips to the aquarium weren’t as frequent. Part of me was really contemplating searching for work elsewhere, but there wasn’t ever a guarantee that you’d find such. Money was crucial when it came to staying in California, and earning whatever is commissioned that day, wasn’t going to cut it paycheck to paycheck. I was relieved when the weekend hit, because that finally meant that I could have a piece of mind.

It was thankfully a Saturday afternoon, and I took it upon myself to make it a day to wake up late. Having weekends off was always a plus, since it gave me time to myself - at least for a while it did. Whitney was more than likely working overtime, and Zahra hadn’t been in contact with me since my shift ended the previous night. Not sure why I was getting the silent treatment, but I wasn’t going to reach out with the risk of getting an earful.

Coincidences had a strange way of rearing their heads, because my phone had alerted me of a message from the same person I had just been thinking about. The message displayed something about her wanting me to get out, and that she’d be on her way to drag me out if I didn’t act quickly or respond to her. Receiving messages like that, always told me that she had an entire day planned for the both of us, or she had something up her sleeve that I’d surely have reason to complain about later. Whatever that was, I knew I was in for something.

Twenty minutes barely passed, before I saw her car make its appearance in my driveway. She always managed to come over when I was trying my best to look presentable, which told me that I was probably always spending way too much time on it. Either way, I never left the house with some form of cosmetic on my face. It was something I’ve grown accustomed to over the years, along with the fact that it made me feel much more confident about my appearance in the public eye.

I could hear her coming up the stairs, which told me that I had about five seconds left before she’d come crashing in.

Okay, maybe two seconds.

“Lucia! You’re pretty enough, now let’s go! The ocean isn’t going to judge you for what you look like!” Her voice always carried, with full intention in making her presence known. There wasn’t a quiet bone in her body, and she was more than prideful about it. She was stubborn too, and there wasn’t any way around it.

“The beach? Had you told me what the plan was, I wouldn’t have taken so long.”

“You always take too long! You could simply be going out at night for a late food grab, and you’d still need to put on the works.”

As much as I hated to admit it, she was right.

“Okay, go get in the car. I’m just going to change into my swimming suit then.” I explained, stepping out of my bathroom to pull out my swimwear from my dresser drawer.

Zahra didn’t bother giving any form of remark as she neared the steps, heading back down and disappearing from view. Thankfully I got changed in a short amount of time, as I spent the last few seconds putting everything I needed into a tote bag, making sure to lock everything up before heading into the outside world.

“You need an outing. Whitney said she’s going to meet us there. Guess she didn’t want to take the overtime. Better for us anyway. We’ll grab some lunch and go down by the shore, yeah?”

I gave a subtle one-worded answer as she pulled out of the driveway, making the short drive to the City Beach area. Huntington Beach was definitely a great place to live, and you truly couldn’t find it anywhere else. It’s a destination you have to see for yourself to know what it’s about.

Whitney indeed caught up with us once we found a table to sit down for lunch, the three of us ordering a bunch of appetizers to share while we sipped on some fruity drinks. Perhaps going out was a good idea on Zahra’s part, for nothing ever beat spending time with best friends.

“You’re kidding. There’s no fucking way.” Zahra hissed, causing Whitney and I to look up in unison.

“No fucking way, what?” Whitney chimed in, placing her drink back down on the table.

It didn’t take a genius to figure out that Zahra had her focus on something, so when I had turned my head to try and figure it out - it was all made clear.

There stood those five guys again. This time, I was able to get a good look at them without worrying about my professionalism at work. All of them were endowed with colorful arrays of tattoos, the designs able to tell stories and recall memories with just a simple glance. I had tattoos myself, but it always intrigued me to see it in other people. My curiosity always peaked enough to want to know what someone’s choice of ink was all about.

There wasn’t any way in knowing if we were spotted or not, but the distance between us wasn’t a long shot. Talking at a normal volume would probably reach their ears, if they happened to be paying attention to the conversation.

“Is it just me, or is it a weird fucking coincidence that they’re here right now?”

Whitney’s words slapped me out of my trance, coming back to reality once again. My head was still turned, and I hadn’t noticed that crystal blues were locked onto me.

Wait. Fuck.

I could see him walking towards me, a huge crooked smile on his face that creased his eyes and wrinkled his nose. For trying to keep my heart from swinging around on a trapeze, I wasn’t doing a good job. If anything, it let go and hit the side of the circus tent - since I felt it pound in my chest a few times. Maybe he was some type of supernatural being, and he was casting spells on me to draw me in.

That would be the far-fetched and unbelievable reason.

“Hey! Fancy seeing you here! Makes it easier than making the trek to watch some fish swim around in a glass home, am I right?” He chirped, gripping the back of my chair.

Glancing back, I noticed Zahra and Whitney were staring right back at me - as if to be awaiting my response. I knew that neither one of them were going to be speaking for me, especially Zahra. Now or never, Lucia. Don’t be rude.

“It’s a coincidence for sure. What brings you here?” I felt like the question was decent. Then again, it may have also been redundant. What else did people do at the beach?

“It’s beach day for us!”

“Beach day?”

“Yeah! It’s a day where we go out and go bar hopping! There’s always great bars near the beach, and you always have to start around here! What about you? What brings you out here?”

Then it was my turn to explain. Maybe the question wasn’t as pointless to ask, as it was giving us something to converse about.

“Sounds like a fun time for you guys. We’re just having some lunch and thinking of heading by the shore and relaxing a little bit to get some sunshine. An easy day after a lengthy work week.”

“Work sucks, dude. That’s for damn sure. I’d say if you didn’t have any plans, you could always come hopping with us!”

For some reason, I wanted to tag along with them. Ditching Whit and Z would not be something I’d be proud of doing though. Not to mention that it would be considered selfish to drop my best friends for a guy I just met just a few short days ago. As fun as it seemed to attend, I just couldn’t.

Before I could answer, another one from the group yelled for Jimmy to come into the pub - as they had gained a spot to sit inside. The look on his face showed hesitance, along with knowing he couldn’t ignore them. The same predicament as mine.

“Looks like I have to split. Catch you in a while, if you’re still here?”

That could take a long time, considering the fact that they had just gone inside of the bar to begin their hopping.

“Just look down by the shore, I’ll wait up for you.”

His eyes practically lit up the sky when I had said that, tapping against the back of the chair in a fit of excitement.

“You better be there! See you soon!”

Just as quick as I watched him approach me, he went back the way he came - pulling open the door to enter the bar with his best friends. My heart quivered a bit, suddenly feeling an ounce of emptiness. There was something about Jimmy that made my thoughts race, making me entirely jittery when he came into view. Butterflies always swarmed around in my stomach, and he made me want to continuously tuck a strand of hair behind my ear.

“Lu?”

I turned around to face the table again, noticing Whitney was looking straight at me.

“Is there something you need to tell us?”

Notes

Biggest apologies for the lack of updates. I had to bring myself back into the mindset to write again, but there's no way I'm going to let you all down! This update is a tad bit short, but I promise for a larger update next.

Lucia needs to make sure she keeps to her own vows. She might be slipping a little bit.

Much love xx

@fyction
She can’t be tamed, and that’s what worries me the most. It’s times like this when she needs to placed her under surveillance.
Hint; “Mean Girls” ;)
