Send Me Away With the Words of a Love Song

Sweet Sixteenth

June 11, 2000

The sensation of his cold, calloused fingers dancing along my bare sides was driving me crazy. I couldn't take this teasing anymore; I needed him now. I caught his attention with a breathy whisper and begged him to just do it now, to just fuck me, but he only smirked.

"Senoma," he whispered in my ear. Bolts of electricity shivered down my spine. "Senoma, wake up…" What on earth was he talking about? I was awake, and he needed to get on with what he was about to do before I lost my mind. "Senoma, you need to wake up…" he said again.

"Senoma, get the hell up!" my brother's Matt voice shouted. I yelped and shot awake. My brother dissolved into laughter, and I glared icily at him.

"Get out of my bedroom, Matt!" I huffed. I was a bit irritated that he'd interrupted my latest sultry dream about Brian, but perhaps that was best. These past few weeks had been…awkward, especially when Brian and I found ourselves in amorous situations. From the beginning of our relationship I'd been coming up with excuses not to sleep with him, and yet here I was dreaming about doing that very thing.

"I'm going," Matt said, holding up his hands in false defense. He backed carefully out of my room, and just as he reached the door, he added, "By the way, you sure have been having a lot of dreams about Brian lately."

"Get out, Matt!" I screamed. I tightened my hand around the first thing I could reach that was sitting on my bedside table and raised it. Matt fled.

I flopped backward onto my bed, running my skinny fingers through my hair. I yawned widely. I had to do something about these dreams. They were causing me to lose sleep. I rolled to my side and curled into a ball beneath my duvet, but my eyelids had scarcely closed when my door banged open and in burst Raury. She leaped onto my bed and began bouncing, chanting, "Get up! Get up! Get up!"

"Raury!" I shouted. My red-headed friend stilled. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to get you, silly!" she chirped. She swung her legs over the side of the bed and sat up. "Jimmy called me and told me he wanted me to come to the 'spot,' and I thought you and Brian could come with us."

"Doesn't Jimmy have a girlfriend?" I asked Raury as I got out of bed. I stretched my arms over my head and let out a yawn.

"Yea, but he said he was gonna break up with her," Raury replied jovially. This was one of Jimmy's habits. He would choose a girlfriend, but all the while he would be stringing Raury along on the side. I always felt bad for Jimmy's current girlfriend. The poor girl never had any idea Jimmy was cheating on her with Raury. Granted, Raury and Jimmy hadn't done anything beyond some heated kissing, but I wasn't sure how long that would last.

"That's what he says every time," I replied flatly.

"But will you come?" Raury asked again, bouncing on my bed.

I sighed. "Yes Raury," I answered. My friend clapped happily. "Just let me get dressed."

♪•♫•♪•♫•♪•♫•♪•♫•♪

"Hmm, hello gorgeous," Jimmy said when Raury and I stepped into view. He went to my red-headed friend and swept her into his arms, kissing her heatedly.

"Damn Jimmy, have a little self-control," Brian admonished jokingly. My heart fluttered at the sound of his voice. The last time I'd heard it, he'd been telling me to strip for him, and then begging me to move my hand faster- "Senoma!" Brian shouted, snapping me out of my thoughts. "Come over here, baby."

I went over and sat next to Brian, who immediately wrapped his arm around my shoulders and mashed his lips to mine. Despite the awkwardness I felt around Brian, I fell into the kiss, gripping his shirt collar so as to pull him closer, and slipping my tongue into his mouth. It was times like these that I wished I wasn't so conflicted over sleeping with Brian.

"You're talking to me about self-control, Brian?" Jimmy asked offensively. "You're the one who's shoving your tongue down Senoma's throat."

"Yea, because if anyone else was doing that, I'd have to do something about it," Brian replied with a smile.

"Oh, quit being such a smartass, Brian," Jimmy said, and Brian flipped him the finger. I giggled and laid my head on his shoulder, thoroughly enjoying being in the company of my boyfriend. Our first year anniversary - as well as my sixteenth birthday - was coming up soon, and I was eager to find out how we would celebrate it. But suddenly Brian's fingers brushed my side, and I remembered my dreams. I gently pushed him away, and he frowned at me.

"What's the matter, Senoma?" he asked worriedly. "Did I do something wrong?"

"No," I replied, shaking my head. "I just…" Unable to think of anything to say, I grabbed the back of Brian's neck and pulled him close for a kiss. As we kissed, we maneuvered until my back touched the ground. I assumed Raury and Jimmy took this as their cue to leave because they soon retreated to a different section of the park. Brian and I made out for a bit before I felt a vibration in my pocket. "Brian," I said, pushing him away from my neck. "Stop." Brian stopped immediately and wordlessly returned to a seating position. He slicked a hand through his dishelved hair as I dug in my pocket for my phone. "Hello?" I said, placing the phone against my ear.

"Senoma dear, where are you?" Mother asked frantically.

"Out with Raury," I answered. It wasn't a lie. I was out with Raury. She just wasn't with me right now.

"Well you need to come to the hospital," Mother replied. I heard a breathy groan of pain in the background, and I was confused. "Your sister is in labor."

"Oh my God," I breathed. I placed my hand over my phone and said to Brian, "We have to go to the hospital. Zina's having her baby!"

"Come on, then. I'll take you," Brian offered, getting to his feet. He grabbed my hand and helped me to my feet as well, and we ran to his car.

♪•♫•♪•♫•♪•♫•♪•♫•♪

"Zina dear, just breathe," Mother was saying as I stepped into the room. She stood next to Zina's bed, holding her hand, and Josh did the same on the opposite side.

"Stop telling me to breathe!" Zina screeched, and Mother released Zina's hand. As I watched, another contraction ravaged my older sister's body, and she crushed down on Josh's hand.

"Ow babe, you're hurting me," he yelped. Zina turned her head to glare at him, and his face paled. "Never mind." Several minutes later, Zina's contraction waned and she visibly relaxed against the bed. Josh timidly brushed the black hair from her forehead and asked, "Do you need anything, babe?"

"Some ice chips would be nice," my sister answered with a smile. Odd. Just seconds ago she ready to bite Josh's head off and now she was sweet again. Perhaps it was the hormones.

"Senoma, is that a hickey on your neck?" Matt asked wickedly once Josh had exited the room.

I slapped my hand over the left side of my neck - because I knew that was where Brian had been kissing during our makeout session in the park - as every pair of eyes turned to me. Zacky's green eyes in particular narrowed with anger; he was far too overprotective of me. "It is not!" I shouted. Still, I took no chances and left my hand on my neck. "I don't even have a boyfriend, so why would I have a hickey?"

"We'll discuss this later," Mother said flatly, sending me a dangerous look. "Right now we have more pressing matters to attend to."

"What did I miss?" Josh asked jokingly as he walked back into the room, Zina's cup of ice chips in hand.

"Senoma has a hickey," Matt announced jovially.

"I do not!" I shrieked.

"Matt! Senoma!" Mother shouted. "Now is not the time for this. Your sister is having a baby. She's in pain. Quit your bickering."

"Mom, they're not bothering me," Zina assured. "They're--" My sister stopped midsentence as another contraction passed through her body, and she gripped the metal bars lining her bed. An inhuman sound escaped her lips, and then she relaxed. "This baby, on the other hand, is bothering me."

"Just a few more hours, babe," Josh cooed. I knew he was trying to comfort Zina, but I also knew that Zina probably hated him right now. "And then we'll have our beautiful little boy."

"Yea sis, hurry up and push out my nephew," Zacky joked. That was Zacky. Always so blunt. "I wanna see him before I have to catch my plane to South Carolina."

"Your plane doesn't leave for a week!" Zina shouted.

"And that's how long this is gonna take," Zacky replied with a smirk.

"Zacky, shut up before I ram one of these sharp metal instruments up your ass," Zina seethed.

"Zina…" Mother muttered, shaking her head.

Oh, I had a feeling this was going to be a long night.

♪•♫•♪•♫•♪•♫•♪•♫•♪

And a long night it was. Zina's labor lasted into the early morning hours, progressing very slowly until her doctor gave her a drug to speed her along. During this time, Brian attempted to call me numerous times, but I ignored him, wrongly miffed at him for indeed giving me a hickey.

Finally, at 3:58 a.m. on June 12, 2000, my nephew Gavin Michael Pacecho was brought into this world. Zina and Josh delighted at the sight of their son, and a few joyful tears even slipped from my sister's green eyes as she caressed the cheek of her newborn. After the nurse took Gavin away to have his tests done, Zina and Josh settled back for a well-deserved rest, and Mother ushered her other three children home to do the same.

"Senoma, you have to wear this crown!" Raury exclaimed, holding a plastic tiara out to me.

"No!" I shot back. "I do not, and I will not!"

"Come on, Senoma!" Raury whined. "It's your sixteenth birthday! Plus, I made this crown all by my lonesome, with my own two hands, and it would just kill me if you didn't wear it."

"You're a bit of a drama queen, you know that, right?" I asked skeptically, taking the plastic tiara, which was decorated with purple plumage and a sparkling sticker that said '16', from my friend's hands.

"Yes, and you love me for it," she replied. "Now come on! Let's go party!" And with that said, Raury seized my hand and dragged me downstairs to the living room.

"Happy birthday, Senoma," Johnny said softly when he approached me. He pressed a small wrapped box into my hands. "It's not much, I'm sorry."

"Oh, you didn't have to get me anything!" I exclaimed. I leaned forward and placed a platonic kiss on his cheek, and his face burned. "Thank you, Johnny."

"You're welcome," he said, and he walked away. I swear, there was something strange about that boy, I just couldn't tell what it was. But I loved him anyway.

"So, is Brian coming?" Raury asked, nudging me with her elbow. I shushed her, as Zacky was standing nearby. "Is he gonna give you a 'present'?"

"Raury!" I whisper-screamed.

"What?" she gasped, her voice dripping with false hurt. "Oh, come on. I know you two have done the dirty."

"No, we haven't," I answered matter-of-factly. "Although I have been having these uh…dreams recently."

"Dreams?" Raury asked curiously. "What kind of dreams?" I remained silent, allowing my blush to deepen, and Raury squealed; Zacky shot her a strange look. "Are they dirtydreams?" I nodded meekly. Raury smacked my arm. "Senoma! Dirty little girl! I thought you didn't wanna sleep with Brian yet."

"I don't," I said. "That's what makes the dreams really awkward."

"I think the dreams are trying to tell you something," Raury stated knowingly. "You. Need. To. Fuck. Brian. Hard."

"Not happening," I told Raury.

"It will," Raury chirped. "I know so."

"Whatever," I mumbled.

The party was no different than any other, sixteenth birthday or not. The biggest surprise of the evening came from Zina and Josh, who presented me with the keys to Zina's old PT Cruiser. I squealed and screamed when they led me to the driveway to see it and hugged them both. Surprisingly, Brian didn't show for the party at all, and this saddened me. He was my boyfriend, and today was not only my birthday, but it was also our one year anniversary.

It was a bit after three in the afternoon when everyone headed home. I thanked them all for the gifts and the party, then went up to my room. I was disappointed that Brian hadn't contacted me at all. It wasn't like him to just forget like that.

A little while after everyone left, my phone vibrated inside my pocket. I was delighted to see that it was from Brian, but I was still miffed at him.

Hey baby. Meet me at the park in fifteen minutes? I have a surprise for you ;)
Received from: Brian <3 at 4:01 p.m.

I quickly replied with a message that I hoped conveyed my anger towards Brian. What on earth makes you think I wanna see you? You forgot my birthday and our anniversary :(
Sent to: Brian <3 at 4:02 p.m.

Please, baby. I promise I didn't forget. I just wanted your gift to be special.
Received from: Brian <3 at 4:03 p.m.

Fine, I'll be there.

When I coasted into the park on my bike, it was nearing sundown. The setting sun cast a wonderful glow over everything in sight. I found Brian waiting on one of the numerous benches in the park. I rode my bike over to where he sat and dismounted, waiting for him to say something.

"Why don't you lock your bike up, baby?" Brian said, gesturing towards one of the designated spots for bikes. "There's somewhere we need to go." I raised my eyebrow in my boyfriend's direction, but complied either way. After I had my bicycle securely locked up, Brian took my hand and led me to the center of the park, near the 'spot.' But it wasn't the 'spot.' It was different. There was just something about it I couldn't explain.

"Brian, what are you up to?" I asked skeptically.

"Senoma, I'm sorry I missed your party," Brian apologized. He pulled me close and grazed his fingertips along my cheek. "But you'll understand why when I show what I've got for you." He reached into the pocket of his ripped jeans and produced a shining silver ring; he placed it in my palm. I studied it. It wasn't a continuous band, rather the plain circular shape was interrupted by what looked like the infinity symbol. Engraved on the inside were the words 'Now & Forever.'

"Brian…" I breathed. "It's beautiful."

"I wanted to get you something as special as you are, Senoma," Brian cooed. He pulled me close once more and gently kissed my lips. "I love you, Senoma." Oh, such beautiful words. I never thought I'd hear Brian say them to me. But he had. He told me he loved me. Brian loved me.

"I love you, too, Brian," I whispered.

"Now and forever, baby," Brian said, quoting the engraving, and he kissed me until the sun slipped beneath the horizon.
