A Little Too Late

Three

Jimmy,

Sorry it's been a few days. I've been busy with school work and band. I've been behind since mom died. She had non-hereditary Huntington's disease, which is rare from what I heard. It got bad fairly fast. That shit kills brain cells, you know? She would get these really bad mood swings, she'd start yelling about nothing. Then, she started to forget things. At first it seemed like nothing, like she couldn't remember where she put her car keys. But, she'd forget important things, like turning the car off, the water. I swear once she forgot who I was. It was scary watching all this happen, and I think it scared her too. One day, I came home from school and she was in the living room. She had a bottle of my medicine in her hand, completely empty.

She wasn't breathing, and by the time the ambulance came it was way to late.
She had been gone for hours. I can't help but to feel like I'm partially to blame, you know? I should've known to keep the only prescription drugs we had in the house locked up.

It's really hard sometimes
. I miss her a lot.

You know, if I wanted your money I would've tracked you down and shown up on your doorstep. Then you'd have no choice but to make me leave somehow.

My grandparents have never met me. I don't
care to ever meet them. Why try to be in someone's life if they have no interest in you? My first statement still stands. If you have no interest in really knowing me, please just quit sending me letters. I don't want an explanation or apology.

Can I ask what was up with your hair when you were younger? Mom left me a few pictures, and man your hair looked harder to tame than mine. Or was that just the style back then?

I should get back to homework

Until next time,
Jaycee

The brunette put her pen down and looked over her shoulder to see her room mate, Kayla, staring at her. She looked away quickly and shoved the small picture of her dad in an envelope before someone would see it.

It wasn't exactly a secret that Jaycee had a new pen pal, and Kayla was the most curious of all. Sure, they weren't the best of friends, but they did talk. They shared a similar taste in music, but Jaycee was more old school.

"Writing you mysterious pen pal again?" She questioned, a small smile on her lips.

Jaycee rolled her eyes, "He's not mysterious, and I am not telling you anything else."

Kayla only chuckled, "You will one of these days."

Jaycee scoffed at her, but little did she know that Kayla was right.
