Just Before You Go

Chapter Forty-Six: You've Been At it For Too Long

“Jimmy, you giant fuck,” Brian slurred, his arm wrapped around Jimmy’s shoulders and his entire weight resting on Jimmy’s long neck.
Jimmy was grinning like an idiot.
“It’s your—it’s your fucking birthday,” Brian continued.
Jimmy nodded happily, looking to me for some sort of assistance, “It is, yes.”
“Fuck you’re old,” Brian laughed loudly, struggling to stay on his feet.
“That’s nice,” Jimmy chuckled. “Thanks, Bri.”
“One foot in the grave, am I right?” Brian smirked, finally releasing his friend and taking off in the loose direction of Zack and Johnny.
We’d gotten properly toasted before all slowly filing out of the after party and back to our hotel. From there, Brian had gotten drunkest of us all. He had been fluttering around, pestering everyone. Jimmy had disappeared into a corner for a while and had returned with a top lip lined in powder.
I’d wiped it away with a reassuring smile. He looked instantaneously guilty.
“It’s your birthday,” I reminded him like I didn’t care. “Free pass.”
He’d kissed my cheek happily, giving me a little wink before running and jumping onto Johnny’s back. He yelled something of a yeehaw, much to Johnny’s dismay.
I’d stepped out for a while, growing tired of Brian’s shit and Jimmy’s shenanigans. We’d all claimed Brian’s room as the designated chill out zone. I took it upon myself to use his bathroom, mostly for hiding purposes.
But eventually, I couldn’t hide out any longer and I’d had to return. While I usually enjoyed Jimmy’s lifestyle and all of the parties that came with it, sometimes it was tiresome. Sometimes I longed to just be with him. Alone. Without the drugs and without the hangover.
Blair and Tyler had come around, pleasing my match making heart. They’d ditched the other guys, who—and I quote—“were little bitches”. Tyler’s words, not mine. Judging by Tyler’s constant watchful eye over Brian, I assumed that he was there under duress.
“Hey,” I waved awkwardly at Blair as she sipped at a beer.
Her face lit up, which obviously made me swoon, “Hey there. We were just talking about you.”
“Oh?” I asked curiously.
Tyler smirked, “It’s a bit of a sausage fest in here.”
I glanced around to find the usual suspects. Each more shitfaced than the last. Blair and I were the only females in attendance, which seemed like poor planning—but when you leave a party up to drunk Jimmy, there were bound to be some kinks.
“I thought maybe you went to bed,” Blair told me. “I’m really fucking happy I was wrong.”
“Just went to get some air,” I half-lied. “Can I join you guys?”
Tyler scooched over so that I could sit between him and his best friend. God, she smelled good.
“Do you guys always party like this?” Tyler asked me curiously.
I shrugged, “From what I’ve seen…sometimes.”
Matt winked at Blair from across the room, a beer in his hand and Zack at his side. He turned away, back to his conversation. Blair looked troubled.
Something inside of me was certain that something had gone on between them. There was a definite chemistry and it was palpable. However, Blair had once seemed comfortable and at ease with him; now she seemed distant and reluctant. I was so curious to know what had changed.
Forever not minding my business.
“So…” I said lamely. “What’s, um, what’s the plan for Haven this year?”
Blair looked at me strangely, a subtle grin plastered to her beautiful face, “You want to talk about our band?”
“Why not?”
She laughed lightly, “Fair enough. We’re recording our album right now…Released a couple singles. They seem to be doing alright…Right, Ty?”
He just nodded, hardly paying attention to us at all.
“Our label is talking about a tour. Nothing confirmed yet, though.”
“You’re on the same label as Avenged, right?”
She nodded, sipping at her beer.
“They’re hitting the road in October,” I told her in case she cared.
I followed her glances to find Brian, hanging off of Johnny and tapping at his chest. She looked pleasantly entertained.
“It’s almost a yearlong tour,” I continued, curious to see if she was listening to me at all.
Tyler was, “That’s a solid run. Are you going?”
“I’m not sure,” I shrugged. “Maybe.”
“Fuck, I can’t wait to tour,” Tyler gushed. “I just want to get out there already. I’ve heard it’s a blast.”
Blair was fixated on Mr. Gates. To make drama even more imminent, Matt seemed to finally notice what I’d been noticing all along. He looked…displeased. He clenched his jaw ever so slightly before strutting over to Brian, effectively stepping between him and Blair.
“Hopefully they set us up with a good opener,” Tyler continued. “Or a cool headliner. I’d be totally fine opening for a good band.”
He was looking to Blair for some sort of response, or reaction, but she was void of both.
“Blair?” he urged with a nudge.
She bolted alert once more, turning to look at her friend, “Sorry, what?”
“What’re you staring at?” Tyler half-laughed.
“Nothing,” she lied. “I was just zoned out. I’m back now.”
Their dynamic was strange. Tyler was visually protective of her at all times, but if I wasn’t mistaken, she seemed to be longing for more. Maybe she’d outgrown their friendship, as sometimes happens with old friends. But I decided I didn’t know either of them well enough to make that sort of judgement call based solely on appearance alone.
“What were we talking about?” she asked with a chuckle.
“Touring,” we said together.
She contorted her face as she took another big swig of beer, “Haven or Avenged?”
“Both,” we said again.
“Do you guys rehearse that?” she teased fondly.
“Tyler!” Jimmy’s voice cut through the noise. “I need your assistance!”
“My assistance?” he called back, laughing.
Jimmy nodded enthusiastically, “We’ve got Johnny in the bathroom! We need you to come over here and help us keep the door shut!”
I groaned. Poor Johnny, the guys were always picking on him without mercy. He took it in stride but there was no way it didn’t get to him. Despite this, Tyler seemed happy to be included. He bounded away and toward my love.
“Can I ask you something?” Blair asked, her eyes darting from Matt/Brian, to Tyler, and then to me.
I nodded, “Sure you can, Blair Peterson.”
“Stop that,” she insisted playfully. “If we’re ever going to be friends, you’re going to have to learn to stop calling me by my full name.”
Friends?
My heart literally stopped dead in my chest. As if Blair Peterson would ever want to be my friend. She was out of my league. I had a hard enough time pretending that I belonged in Jimmy’s world—I wasn’t sure I could take on another celebrity.
“No can do, Blair Peterson,” I joked. “But what’s your question?”
“I was just wondering—” she stopped, moving ever so slightly to peer around Matt. “Never mind, it’s stupid.”
“You want to know about Brian?” I asked, hoping I was right.
She snapped her neck to look at me. Uh oh.
“What? Why would you say that?”
I shrugged lazily, “You’ve been staring at him all night.”
“I’m…” she hesitated, relaxing a little. “Trying to figure him out, I guess.”
“How’s that?”
“He’s hot and cold,” she offered, finishing the last of her beer. “One second he’s an arrogant prick and the next…I don’t understand him.”
“Do you want to?” I asked cutely.
She shrugged, a tinge of pink bruising beneath her cheeks, “I’m not sure.”
“He’s a pretty good guy,” I told her. “When he isn’t acting like a total douchebag. It’s all an act, I promise you.”
She smiled at me, “It really doesn’t matter.”
I was positive that it did matter.
Before I could really grill her about it, Matt’s dimpled face was beaming down at us.
“Can I join you, ladies?” he asked us in his typical charming Matt way.
Blair shook her head, “We’re girl talking.”
“About me?” he grinned, giving her a little wink.
She looked to be done with that. Her eyes rolled a little and she let out a loud sigh.
“I need another beer,” she told us both, climbing to her feet and disappearing toward the minifridge.
“What’d you do?” I asked him as accusingly as I could.
He laughed, “What do you mean?”
“What did you do?” I repeated. “Why is she weird around you? Did you two hook up?”
“Woah, woah,” he laughed, his hands at his chest. “Before you get into a game of twenty questions, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”
“Did you?” I asked pointedly.
He shook his head, “No, Mom.”
I tried not to laugh, “Then what’s up?”
He shrugged, looking genuinely baffled, “I have no idea. Maybe I said something that offended her…I really do not know.”
Blair didn’t strike me as a woman to be offended easily. If anything, she looked like she’d hit you twice as hard as you tried to hit her. I envied that…to an embarrassing degree. I was easily hurt and completely malleable.
I wished that I wasn’t.
But, then, I had a boyfriend that loved me—and she did not. So, maybe I wasn’t a total loss. I had things in my life that couldn’t be simply because I existed. I’d waited for Jimmy my entire life. He made me feel almost worthy. Almost.
Brian leaned an arm against the fridge Blair was trying to get into. She placed one hand on her hips, challenging him without words. Or maybe she used words—I couldn’t hear them. But she did not look impressed.
She tried to push passed him, but Brian followed her. She was half way back to me when she realized; spinning around to face her chaser. Now I could hear them.
“Don’t you have friends to pester or something?” she asked him coldly, turning on her heel once more.
Brian made a mistake then. A big, big mistake.
He reached out and grabbed her arm. To be clear, anyone with eyes could see that he wasn’t trying to hurt her—he simply wanted her attention.
But before she could even give it to him, Tyler pounced into action. He tackled Brian to the ground and they immediately started throwing fists. It felt surreal at first—like watching a movie, unaware that you’re actually part of it at all.
Blair just shook her head at the pair of them, stepping over their grappling bodies and heading straight out the door. It slammed shut behind her.
Jimmy and Matt pulled the dueling men off of one another, Jimmy holding his best friend back with all of his might. Brian writhed and wriggled in an attempt to get free.
“Stay the fuck away from her!” Tyler warned Brian loudly. “If you ever touch her again, I swear to god I will beat you within an inch of your life.”
“Fuck you,” Brian snarled, still trying to break free. “You pathetic little shit.”
Jimmy pulled Brian into the bathroom, slamming that door too. I could hear them exchanging words—loud words. Matt finally let Tyler go.
Everyone was staring. We weren’t really sure what else to do. It had been a serious overreaction if ever there had been such a thing.
“Sorry,” Tyler muttered, grabbing his jacket from the couch where I still sat. “Tell Jimmy I said I was sorry.”
“Tyler,” I said quietly. “You know he didn’t…he didn’t really do anything wrong…right?”
Tyler grimaced at me, shaking his head, “You all deserve each other.”
We shut it down immediately after Jimmy had finally gotten Brian cooled off. Zack had volunteered to supervise the angry guitarist, and he’d dragged Brian down the hall and into his room. Jimmy and I bid everyone farewell, pushing the debris from our bed so we could actually utilize it.
“I don’t even know what to say,” I squeaked.
Jimmy laughed, pulling me into his chest and running his fingers through my long hair, “Brian’s always getting himself into shit.”
“He didn’t do anything though,” I objected strongly.
“I know,” Jimmy sighed. “I’m sure Blair knows, too…Tyler’s going to be an obstacle in our devious plan.”
“I think that plan is as good as garbage,” I frowned. “Maybe they just don’t get along. Whatever he said to her, it pissed her off…So…maybe he’s not totally blameless.”
Jimmy smiled, “He rarely is.”
“Despite the whole fight thing…did you have a good birthday?”
“I did,” he nodded. “Especially because of the fight. Nothing better than watching Brian get sucker punched in the lip!”
Jimmy chuckled at the recent memory, shaking his head.
“I didn’t have a chance to give you your gift,” I told him, sitting up on my elbow to look at him.
“I don’t need gifts,” he told me seriously. “All I need is you.”
I smiled, “I’m glad you think so…The gift is me.”
Jimmy furrowed his brows in confusion.
“I’m going to come,” I told him.
He smiled giddily, “I can get you off just by looking at you now? Damn, James Sullivan. You sure have outdone yourself this time.”
“No, you idiot,” I groaned with a laugh. “I’m going to come…on the tour.”
He lit up, sitting straight up and pushing me over in the movement, “Seriously?”
“Yeah,” I giggled. “If you still want me to.”
“Of fucking course I still want you to,” he bounced in his seated position.
He pushed himself on top of me, lingering his face inches above mine. The devious grin on his face was enough to know I’d done the right thing. His eyes were bright and they were as excited as mine.
I lived for these moments.
“Buckle up, baby,” he told me cockily. “Because now you really are going to come.”
“Do you mean come or cum?” I teased.
“Shut the fuck up,” he laughed as he crashed his lips into mine.
Correction: I lived for these moments.
