Just Before You Go

Chapter Forty-One: Seize the Day

We stopped for a quick dinner on the way to the hotel. Once we’d checked into our room, we were just beginning to debate what to get up to next, when an obnoxious knock at the door interrupted before we’d really begun. Brian and Zacky traipsed into our room loudly.
“About time you fuckers got here,” Brian breathed, flopping onto the bed with his arms behind his head.
“Do you have a tracking device planted on us or what?” I asked suspiciously. “We literally just got in here.”
“I know,” Brian nodded once.
I eyed him skeptically.
“I know everything,” Brian assured me cockily.
Matt and Johnny had ridden up together. He and Brian still hadn’t smoothed things over, judging by what Jimmy had said. I was a little surprised when Brian didn’t immediately volunteer himself to car share with Jimmy and I but was a little relieved. He’d obviously imposed himself onto Zacky.
“How’s it going, Aria?” Zacky asked politely, sitting at the edge of the bed. “How was driving up with this maniac?”
Jimmy scowled.
“It was fine,” I giggled. “I’m fine.”
“Glad to see you could make it,” he smiled at me. “Jimmy would have been bummed and spent his weekend sulking if you’d stayed behind.”
Jimmy grinned, “It’s true.”
“Well I’m here,” I said definitively.
“Let’s go out,” Brian announced loudly, sitting himself up. “I’m bored already.”
Brian was being weirdly abrasive. He was many things; pompous, arrogant, cocky…but abrasive wasn’t really his style. It was Jimmy’s style. Maybe he was taking a page from his best friend’s book.
“I like out!” Jimmy agreed even more loudly. “I like your thinking, Syn!”
“I got your back, buddy,” Brian jeered.
Zacky must have caught onto my suspicions. He leaned closer to me and lowered his voice.
“Brian’s high as fuck,” he said with a really light laugh.
I rolled my eyes, “Oh, great.”
Brian intoxicated in any fashion was usually a recipe for disaster…in any sense of the word. He was always making an absolute ass of himself…and sometimes it was painfully difficult to play audience to.
Jimmy had been mostly behaving himself, to my knowledge anyway. He’d dabbled in recreational drug use here and there but nothing that I’d really taken any actual issue with. I wasn’t about to start demanding he change on my account anyway. I was a pretty big fan of him just the way he was.
“Are you guys talking about me?” Brian grinned from ear to ear.
We nodded, “Yes.”
“How cute,” Brian cooed sarcastically.
Jimmy was already headed for the door. Tomorrow was the plan for real celebrations—after their set, we were all positioned to head out to the after party for free drinks and crowds of people. It was what Jimmy wanted to do, so we were all in agreement. I was a little nervous about Brian and Matt together, though. Jimmy assured me that it wasn’t normal for the duo to bicker—especially about women.
“Come on!” Jimmy hollered at us with his goofy voice.
We all piled into the hallway, Brian jogging to catch Jimmy. He leapt onto his mammoth friend’s back with a loud war cry. Jimmy caught him at the last second to keep them both from toppling over. They giggled like girls.
“Where are we going?” I asked Zacky in hopes he might know.
He shrugged, “Wherever the love birds lead us.”
They walked with their arms hung around each other’s shoulders, their steps almost in sync. It made me miss my friends back home. I longed for that long-term devotion that came only from a friend made in childhood. Jen was the closest I had to a best friend and I hardly knew her at all. We’d already fought more in the few months I’d known her than I’d fought with anyone from my past in Minnesota. I wanted a Brian to my Jimmy.
Maybe a more polite Brian though.
“We’ll schmooze the concierge!” Brian called back at us over his shoulder. “They’ll know somewhere cool to go!”
“He doubles as psychic,” Zacky grinned at me.
I giggled, “Apparently.”
Brian and Jimmy stopped in their tracks, turning their attention back to Zacky and I with serious questioning about our ability to walk quickly.
Jimmy abandoned Brian to take up space on my body. He snaked an arm around my shoulder and pulled me into his lanky body.
“Much better,” he smirked down at me happily.
“We have to get good and drunk tonight,” Brian told us all. “Anticipation drunk—midnight marks the day that this majestic creature was born. And that, I think, is a pretty fucking good reason to celebrate!”
“Most of us get a day,” Zacky joked as our group got moving down the hall once more. “Jimmy gets an entire weekend.”
Jimmy grinned, “It’s because I’m the master.”
“Of what?” Zacky asked suspiciously.
Brian stopped abruptly. He had his hand out by his side as if to cease us, too. I glanced around Brian curiously, interested to know what had halted our group in such a way.
And, of course, it was Matt. And Blair.
They were all smiles, leaned into one another as Matt fumbled with his room key. Neither one of them seemed to notice us at all. Brian was still—and we were silent—until they ducked into Matt’s room and the door clicked closed behind them.
We all glanced at each other with great concern.
“Come on,” Zacky soothed, gently pushing Brian forward. “Let’s go see if we can’t cause some havoc.”
Brian shook himself out of his daze, “That’s my middle name.”
“No it’s not,” Jimmy cackled loudly. “It’s fucking Elwin. You wish it was something cool like Havoc.”
“Like Davey?” I asked sheepishly.
They all snapped their necks to gawk at me. I couldn’t help but feel a little swirl of pride pooling just beneath my skin.
“I listen to some stuff,” I giggled.
Jimmy pulled my head into the crook of his elbow and planted a sloppy kiss on my temple, “This is why I love her!”
Brian rolled his eyes, immediately regaining his original momentum. He disappeared around the corner while the rest of us lollygagged to catch up. He was already bent over the counter, hitting up the adorable girl at the counter for information on the city nightlife. She was batting her eyelashes and had the sweetest smile plastered to her flirty face.
He finished their conversation with a wink before skipping back to us, plunking his sunglasses onto his nose, despite the fact that the sun was already setting outside.
“I’ve got a good recommendation,” he told us. “Apparently it’s a hot spot.”
“That sounds like a symptom of a disease,” Zacky smirked.
Jimmy’s face grew with excitement, “Brian, are you taking us to the red light district? I told you, we don’t have time to visit your mom on this trip.”
“Mom jokes?” Brian asked flatly. “Really? How old are you, twelve?”
“Hear that, Aria?” Jimmy grinned, nudging me a little. “I’ve aged!”
“Let’s go,” Brian gestured to the door with his head. “There are celebrations to be had.”
And I was sure there were antics to be had as well. I just hoped it was less dramatic than the last time we’d all been out drinking together.

Notes

Aaaaalmost Jimmy's birthday. What do we suspect Aria's gotten her favorite madman as a gift, hm?
