Just Before You Go

Chapter Thirty-Five: Up and At 'Em

“Come on,” Jimmy groaned, pulling at his guitarist’s leg with all of his strength.
Brian buried his fingers into the bed sheets and held on for dear life. They’d been at this for several minutes and it was clear that they were both becoming overwhelmingly frustrated with one another. It was just after nine and Jimmy was raring to get to the after party. Brian, on the other hand, looked like he’d just crawled out of an early grave.
“I can’t!” Brian shouted into the pillow as Jimmy upped his game and took Brian’s other leg into his monstrous hands. “I’ll fucking die if you make me get up!”
“Maybe so,” Jimmy grunted, pulling as hard as he could. “But I’ll fucking kill you right here if you don’t come.”
“Just go with Aria,” Brian whined. “Let me die in peace.”
Jimmy glanced over at me. I was grinning like an idiot, I shrugged dramatically with my arms far out by my sides. Jimmy grinned back at me before turning back to Brian and pulling both of his legs with all of his might. Brian slid down the mattress with a loud groan.
“Come,” Jimmy grunted, “on.”
Why?” Brian whined, slamming his hands down onto the sheets like a toddler.
Jimmy straightened out and smiled, “Because we love you, duh.”
Brian rolled his eyes.
“It’s true!” Jimmy insisted happily. “Isn’t it, Aria?”
Brian looked over at me.
I nodded, “It’s true. Sorry, Brian.”
“Off you go!” Jimmy beamed as Brian rose from the bed and onto his feet. “Go get yourself all prettied up!”
Brian grumbled as he headed for the bathroom, “I liked it better when you were single.”
Jimmy and I waited patiently as Brian did whatever Brians do in that bathroom. I’d been ready for nearly an hour, waiting for Jimmy to wake up and then for Jimmy to wake up sick Brian. There was no rest for the wicked, I’d learned…which meant that it didn’t matter how fucked up you’d been earlier in the day; you’d still be dragged to a party.
Brian finally emerged from the bathroom looking sickly as ever; but with eyeliner!
He’d slicked his hair back and I couldn’t help but drool for one quick second. There was no denying that Brian was attractive—something about the way he carried himself was nothing short of endearing. If you looked upon him, you might get lost in those deep brown eyes of his—until he opened his arrogant mouth.
“Ready?” Jimmy asked happily as he bounced off of the bed.
Brian mumbled something to himself but was interrupted by Jimmy’s long arm slinking it’s way around Brian’s neck and pulling him through the door. I followed, shaking my head at them.
We caught a cab and Jimmy happily instructed the driver on the best route to take. Brian was leaned against the window, eyes half-shut. He looked to be on the verge of death.
“I want to go to bed,” Brian whined from the seat beside me.
Jimmy whipped around in the front, “Quit griping.”
Brian pouted, which appeared to appease Jimmy enough that he turned back around and resumed his loud conversation with our taxi driver.
“Everyone will be there,” I tried to encourage Brian quietly. “You might feel better when you get there.”
He scoffed, “I doubt that.”
“Worst case, you ditch us in the crowd and leave,” I smirked.
“May have to do that,” he nodded once. “I feel like I just crawled out of the fucking crypt.”
“I hear griping!” Jimmy sang from the front.
Brian rolled his eyes theatrically.
“Your girlfriend will be there,” Jimmy continued without looking back at Brian and I.
Brian sighed, “Yeah, ‘cause that girl’s ever going to want to talk to me again.”
“You were a class A piece of shit,” Jimmy cackled. “How could she possibly resist your charm?”
Brian looked sullen. I wasn’t sure I’d ever seen him that way—maybe in small, insignificant flashes…but never as a whole. He looked sad and maybe a little burdened by his own misbehavior. I smiled sympathetically over at him; he didn’t seem to notice.
“You really weren’t that bad,” I told him quietly.
Brian lit up a smidgen, “Really?”
“No, not really!” Jimmy roared from the front with a laugh. “You were awful!”
Brian narrowed his eyes and sank against the window once more. Any life I’d temporarily restored in him had been ripped away by the vulture up front.
“If it helps,” I started cautiously. “She really didn’t seem to mind.”
Brian looked over at me sarcastically.
“I swear,” I insisted. “She looked almost…I don’t know…entertained.”
“That’s true!” Jimmy yelped.
Brian shrugged his shoulders, “It doesn’t matter. Just sucks since it seems like everyone else likes her so much.”
“Oh yeah,” Jimmy chuckled. “It’s us that like her so much.”
“Matt sure seemed to,” Brian growled under his breath.
Jimmy turned around, looping an arm around the back of the seat to hold himself in place.
“Give me a break,” was all Jimmy said before releasing his grip and unwinding himself.
Brian wasn’t wrong, though. I didn’t have it in me to verbally agree with him—he already looked so defeated. The empathy was enough to bring my heart down.
“If it doesn’t matter, then why do you care if Matt likes her?” I asked knowingly.
Brian slowly turned his head to look at me. I was immediately unnerved and reminded of my place. We weren’t friends. We weren’t family. We weren’t really anything. If you removed Jimmy from the equation, Brian and I would never be found in the same place. I knew I’d overstepped my bounds.
“Can we talk about something else?” Brian said lowly. “Anything else.”
Jimmy turned to us with a devious grin, “We’re going to get you laid tonight.”
“Oh god,” Brian grumbled. “I will throw up all over the poor broad. Tonight is not the night.”
“Hair of the dog!” Jimmy cheered. “You’ll be back to your shitty self in no time!”
We, eventually, pulled up outside the party and the sheer amount of people waiting to get in was staggering. Brian whined loudly at the sight of it, swearing up and down that he’d fling himself off the building if we made him wait in that line.
“You’d have to wait anyway,” Jimmy told him seriously. “You know, in order to get inside, climb to the top, and then fling your helpless body off the roof. So…Any way I see it, you’re waiting in that line.”
And he did.
Waiting there was like standing next to a conveyor belt built specifically the shepherd A-Level celebrities into the building. They breezed past us with little regard and no recognition. Until one—he stopped himself, turned around and excitedly dragged the three of us up to the front.
“They’re with me,” was all he said to the security man who didn’t seem to care at all.
It was the same guy as the other night…I couldn’t remember his name. It didn’t matter. Brian and Jimmy chatted with him for a while before Matt came bounding over to us. Jimmy glanced at him from the sides of his eyes and then shot me a little grimace.
“Hey!” Matt smiled as he approached us.
I watched as Brian clenched and unclenched his fists a couple of times and his muscles visibly tensed. It definitely mattered.
“Shadows!” Jimmy leered. “What’s up, you hunky son of a bitch?”
Matt almost blushed, “Bar’s packed. It’s all duded behind the bar, too—so…might need to send in a female to elicit some attention.”
“Hear that?” Jimmy grinned down at me. “You’re useful!”
“Shut up,” I giggled, hitting his chest playfully.
Matt’s eyes shifted from Jimmy to Brian, “Hey, Bri. How’re you—”
“I need a drink!” Brian announced, shoving passed Matt with a noticeable aggression.
Matt sighed, shaking his head a little, “He’s still pissed at me, huh?”
Jimmy shrugged.
“Did he say why?” Matt asked sadly.
“Like you don’t know,” I scoffed—immediately catching myself as my heart raced with regret.
Matt eyed me weirdly, looking totally taken aback, “I don’t…Do you?”
“You were hitting on Blair Peterson,” I shrugged simply.
“I was not,” Matt argued awkwardly. “And even if I was…”
Jimmy groaned, “Let’s go drink! I’m over Brian’s girl problems.”
“Yeah, but—” Matt tried.
Jimmy was gone. He was dragging me away with him. I waved shamefully as Jimmy pulled me into the crowd—it wasn’t a good place to leave my conversation with Matt but it appeared that I had no choice.
And then I caught sight of it.
Brian was off yonder, chatting it up with a tiny blonde. He looked almost lively considering he’d been on the cusp of death only moments before. However, that wasn’t the interesting bit.
The interesting bit was that a wild Blair Peterson was spotted just on the other side of the room, watching Brian intently as he talked to a girl that wasn’t her. She looked…dare I say it, jealous? She was sipping at her drink while her friend (boyfriend?) chatted in her ear. While she appeared to be, mostly, listening…her eyes were glued to Brian as he laughed and rubbed at the blonde’s arm.
It was going to be an interesting night.
