Best Friends Forever

1/1

Kodi Andrews and Zachary Baker are the best of friends. They met when, a five-year-old, Kodi moved next door to the Bakers. Zachary was bugging his mum about meeting the black haired, brown eyed, girl as soon as she climbed out of the car.

“Mom, please I wanna see her,” the five-year-old boy had looked up with shinning green eyes and a pout on his small lips.

“Let them get settled first Zachary, then we’ll go over and see them.”

Not fully happy with the response Zachary nodded and looked over the driveway towards the girl who was staring right back at him. Meekly the two five-year-olds waved at each other before being called inside for dinner.

That day stuck with the two best friends for the next 12 years of their lives. They had become inseparable over the years. Wherever Zachary went Kodi followed and it was the same if Kodi went anywhere Zachary followed her. Their other friends had made fun of them at times but they all knew how the two were meant for each other, even if they didn’t see it themselves.

“So we have one month left in this hell hole before the summer, where we can spend the whole holiday on the beach! Then it’s senior year!” yelled James Sullivan, the crazy drummer, and best friend to everyone in the group.

“Jimmy calm down you’ll get us kicked out,” Kodi smiled at the lanky blue eyed teen.

“It’ll be fine Kods, the Sanders love us all” he smiled at her as he spun around on the chair in Matthew Sanders’ garage, where they normally help the band practice.

“No man they love Kodi too much all she would have to do is batter her eyelids at them and they won’t kick you all out,” Matt chuckled, knowing that all the parents loved the brown-eyed girl as their own daughter, even if her own parents weren’t too happy with the friends she chose to hang out with. They told her over and over that the five boys were trouble and how they were a bad influence on their precious little girl.

Over the years they had tried to keep her and Zack away from each other but with them going to the same schools and being in all the same classes it was harder than they thought, and now at 17 they knew there was no way to keep her away, she’d only sneak out to see the emerald eyed boy.

Kodi smiled up at Matt and looked over at the garage door as a petite blonde walked in, “Valary!” Kodi shot over to her and almost knocked the two onto the concrete flooring of the practice room, as the boys liked to call it.

“Damn no one told us we’d see two hot girls on the floor,” The two girls rolled their eyes at the brown-eyed boy, Brian Haner.

“Gross dude,” Kodi looked over at him and stuck her tongue out at him, Brian along with Matt were like her big protective brothers, Jimmy was her prank buddy, Val was like her sister, Johnny was the little brother she’d always wanted. That left Zack he was her best friend and nothing would ever be able to change how the two of them were. They knew they’d be best friend forever. They’d gotten used to people mistaking them as being a couple because they did everything together, dances at school they’d go together or the movies. They would always be with one another.

“I see a Kodi where’s Baker?” Johnny looked around as he walked in.

“Bathroom,” Kodi replied without looking up from her phone screen.

“The only time they’re not together, so what’s the plans for the day?” Jimmy smiled now that he’d finally stopped spinning around.

“Practicing?” Matt looked over at the drummer while pulling Val to his side.

“But we always do that man,” the lanky drummer pouted and looked at Kodi, “If you ask him he’ll change his mind,” sending her a cheeky smile before going back to spinning on the chair.

“Oh no I did that last time you were bored Jimmy,” Kodi smiled at him.

“You’re no fun,” the drummer pouted as Zack came back in to the garage and sat down next to Kodi, their knees touching.

“Who’s no fun?” Zack asked looking around the room.

“Kodi she won’t ask Mattie boy what we’re doing today.” Jimmy stated.

“Ah I see,” Zack smiled at Kodi and leaned back on the couch.

“Fine Jimmy let’s go find your duck,” Matt sighed while rubbing a hand over his face.

“Yes!” the blue eyed boy exclaimed while jumping off of the chair.

With that the seven friends made their way towards the park. Jimmy running ahead of them, Matt and Val holding hands while quietly talking to each other, Brian and Johnny were talking about music, while Kodi and Zack brought up the rear, just like the couple up front they were holding hands, as usual, while smiling at their friends.

“So what are your plans after we finish high school?” Kodi looked over at Zack.

“Well we’re going to practice like hell and work out asses off to get the band noticed, you?” Zack smiled down at her.

“Mmmm make sure you don’t get in trouble and that you guys get noticed.”

Zack smiled at her and pulled her close, “I love you K.”

Smiling and laying her head on his bicep, “I love you too Zee.”

They reached the park and laughed as Jimmy dragged Johnny in search of the duck he always found and chased around the park, sometimes it would backfire on the drummer and the duck would chase him back.

The rest of the group smiled at their crazy friend while sitting under one of the trees near the pond that was in the park. Brian was busy on his phone, most likely texting his current girlfriend, Becca. Matt and Val were cuddled up to each other and smiling over at their friend. Kodi had sat down with Zack and laid her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes and sighed deeply.

“You okay?” Zack looked down at the dark haired girl.

“Yeah just enjoying the sun before I have to get home,” Kodi explained with a sigh. That was the only other time you’d find the two away from each other, when Kodi had to be at home, even though they’d text each other the whole time.

“I don’t get why your parents don’t like us at all,” Brian stated and looked up from his phone.

“I don’t but they say that your bad influences if anyone is its Jimmy, he’s a crazy fucker,” the black haired girl chuckled causing the rest of the group to laugh.

“That is true,” Brian nodded and looked around, “speaking of the devil where is he?”

Kodi bit her lip seeing Jimmy behind the brown eyed boy, “I haven’t seen him for a while.”

“BOO!” Jimmy yelled in Brian’s ear.

“Fuck!” Brian shot up from his seat and turned around to face his taller friend, “what the fuck dude,” Brian punched the drummer as he just laughed and ran off.

Smiling at the group Kodi checked her phone and sighed, “I’ve got to go guys. I’ll see you all tomorrow,” she made her way around the group hugging everyone before getting to Zack.

“Want me to walk you home?” the green eyed teen asked with a smile on his face.

“Sure, you live next door anyway,” smiling the two of them walked hand in hand back to the street the two of them lived on.

Kodi smiled at him as she walked into the house to see her mom and dad sat on the sofa waiting for her.

“What’s going on?” Kodi stood in the doorway and looked at her parents.

“We need to talk. Sit down please.”

Looking at them Kodi walked over to the single chair and sat down before turning to look at them.

“After the formal in a couple of weeks we’re moving, you’ll be finishing High school in New York. There’s a school that have already accepted you,” her father explained while looking over at his daughter.

“W-w-what? I can’t leave I want to finish high school here. Please! I’ve done everything you’ve ever wanted me to. I’m home by 9pm every night, I don’t bring my friends over. I do my homework and my chores around the house before I even see them. Please don’t make me leave them. They’re family please,” Kodi looked over at them as she felt the tears start to build up in her eyes.

“It doesn’t matter this decision is already made and its final. You have a month left here before we move.”

“I hate you!” Kodi screamed at them and ran upstairs, she slammed her bedroom door shut and threw herself on the bed and cried into the pillow and pulled the stuffed husky that Zack had won for her at the fair one time when they went.

Zachary was worried about his best friend; he hadn’t heard from her since she went home a few hours ago. He’d messaged her but got no response from the girl at all. He had never been ignored by his best friend before so these feelings were all new to him. Had he done something wrong without realising it? Had something happened to her? These were the thoughts that were swimming around in his head until he fell asleep, around 3am with no messages from her.

The next morning when Zachary got to school he looked around for Kodi but didn’t see her anywhere. This was new for the green eyed boy, he always walked to school with Kodi, he has ever since the two of them were old enough to walk to school without their parents.

When the group saw Zack walk into the home room that they all share alone. They all shared looks with each other before the teen sat down in his usual seat, leaving the one to his right free for Kodi when she turned up.

“Where’s Kodi?” Matt bit the bullet and asked the question on everyone’s mind.

The black haired teen shrugged and looked over at them, “I don’t know I waited for her for half an hour before her mom came out and said she had an appointment today. And would be in later. I haven’t heard from her since yesterday,” the teen looked over at his friends and shrugged.

“She probably fell asleep Zack,” Val smiled over at him as the teacher walked in.

By the time lunch rolled around there was still no sign of Kodi anywhere Zack was getting really worried now. If he didn’t hear from her soon he’d go over to hers and find out what is wrong with her. When he was walking around the school he noticed people looking, everyone knew he and Kodi were inseparable, but he ignored the looks and focused on finishing the day.

At the end of the day he’d still not heard from Kodi so he walked straight home and knocked on her front door, even though he knew her parents wouldn’t be happy about this at all.

The door opened and Kodi’s father stood in the doorway and looked down at him, “yes?”

“I was wondering if Kodi was okay, I didn’t see her at school today.”

“She was ill and stayed home, now please get off of my porch,” with that the door was closed in his face.

Sighing the teen walked across the front yard to his own home and walked in to see his mom in the kitchen making dinner, with a smile on her face, “hey Zack, Kodi are you joining us for dinner?”

She turned and saw her son alone after school for the first time in years, “no her dad says she’s ill.”

The teen sighed and sat down at the table as his mom places a glass and the carton of orange juice down on the table.

“I’m sure she’ll be okay soon Zack, she’s been ill before,” his mom sat down with him.

“Yeah but she’s told me before mom, I’ve not heard from her and I’m worried. What can I do?”

“We know you aren’t welcome over there so I guess your best bet is to wait for her to get better. She’s probably been asleep all day, if you haven’t heard from her by tonight call her.”

Nodding the teen went upstairs and started working on his homework and looked out the window that faced Kodi’s bedroom, her curtains were closed, a sign she possibly was asleep. He focused back on his work but soon found himself getting distracted with thoughts of the dark haired girl next door.

Just as he climbed into his bed his phone pinned, signalling a message, upon opening it he saw it was from Kodi.

‘Hey, Sorry I haven’t messaged since yesterday I’ve been sleeping practically all day and when I wasn’t I was in the bathroom. I’ve miss seeing you Zee. Love Kodi xxx’

Smiling he send her a response.

‘Hey, don’t worry about it I was just totally worried after not hearing from you all day. Will I see you tomorrow? I’ve missed seeing you too K. Love you too xxx’

The two of them texted for a little longer before they most had fallen asleep feeling a lot better after talking for a while.

Everything had gone back too normal over the next few weeks, this the formal coming up the girls were going shopping in the mall while the boys checked out the music shop in there.

“So I’m guessing you and Baker are going together?” The petite blonde smiled at her friend while looking thought the different types of dresses that the shop had to offer. The blonde looks at a light pink dress and held it against herself before changing her mind and putting it back.

“Most likely,” Kodi smiled while looking at a black dress that would hug her figure, “I mean we always go so why would this time be any different?”

Val smiled and pulled a dark purple dress to try on and shrugged, “I wasn’t sure if he’d officially asked you to go as his date.”

Kodi smiled and chose a red full length dress to try on. The two of them headed towards the dressing rooms to try the dresses on. Smiling at each other as they walked out of the store with their purchases to find the boys.

“Did you both find a dress?” Matt smiled and pulled Val close and kissed her cheek.

“Yes we can’t wait for you all to see them,” Brian smiled and wondered over to Jimmy as they headed to the food court. The rest of the group followed them leaving Kodi and Zack alone.

“So are you looking forward to the formal?” Zack bit his lip nervously and looked at his best friend.

Smiling Kodi nodded, “Of course I am I get to spend the night with my best friend without having to be home before 9pm.”

“So will you be my date to the formal?” Zack chuckled at her before asking her to the dance.

“Yes. I thought you’d never ask Zee,” Kodi grinned at him and hugged him tightly, “Now let’s go get food I’m starving.”

Smiling Zack nodded and let her leading over to the rest of the group. They spent the rest of the day hanging out before heading over to Zack’s for the evening.

The night of the formal came around quickly for the two best friends. Zack looked in the mirror before pulling his jacket on. He took one last look in the mirror before he headed next door to pick Kodi up.

Before he had chance to even knock on the door, Kodi’s mother opened it and gave Zack a tight lipped smile, “Zachary you look nice.”

“Thank you Mrs Andrews, is Kodi ready?” Zack played with his lip ring nervously, this was the only time he’d not been kicked off of the porch.

“She’ll be down in a second, you have her home by 11pm, understood?”

“Of course Mrs Andrews, I’ll have her home by then I promise,” he smiled at her as he caught a glimpse of Kodi coming down the stairs. He couldn’t help the smile that grew on his face as he looked at his best friend, dressed in a red full length dress with her black hair hanging in curls down her back.

“Be careful you to,” Mrs Andrews called as the two best friends made their way to Zack’s car.

The night was full of laughter for the group of friends. Jimmy was dancing like a goon all night, Johnny was dancing with his date, a small shy red head names Elle, Brian was talking with his date Sophie, Matt and Val were slow dancing to the song playing and Zack had his arms around Kodi with his hands resting on the small of her back while her arms were wrapped around his neck. She couldn’t stop smiling as she looked up into the bright green eyes of her best friend.

Looking at the clock Zack realised they’d have to be leaving soon if they didn’t want to get in trouble with Kodi’s parents, “K we should get going, it’s 10:45.”

Sighing the dark haired girl nodded her head before heading over to her friends and saying goodbye to them all. Slowly she made her way back to Zack and the two of them left the formal and headed back to Kodi’s. Zack kissed her cheek and smiled as she walked up the steps of the porch and into the house. He made his was home and got ready for bed while still texting his best friend.

Kodi laid in bed with all of her things packed apart from her stuffed husky named Alpha, sighing she hugged him close and looked at the time before calling Zack.

“Kodi are you okay?” Zack’s voice came through the speaker.

“Yeah I just need to tell you something,” Kodi whispered biting her lip.

“Okay K what is it?” Zack was beginning to get worried.

“We’re moving, I leave tomorrow. Mom and dad are making me finish high school in New York. I don’t want to go Zack,” Kodi let the tears fall as she sobbed, “I want to stay here but they won’t change their mind.”

Kodi waited to hear from Zack but all she heard was his breathing.

“Zee? Say something please,” Kodi nibbled on her lip while waiting.

“You’re moving? I’m not going to see you again!” Zack’s voice started to rise.

“Zack please don’t get mad,” Kodi sobbed through the phone, “I love you Zee.”

“What did you think would happen if you called me at 3 in the morning with something like this?! That I’d just go back to sleep?!”
