Seize the Day
I had been sitting here... for at least an hour... I don’t know.. I don't really know what happened - I was riding Spirit on a small trail... it wasn't a hard trail it wasn't one I was worried about that's for sure... something must've spooked him - and then it all goes black
I didn't think anything of it- I've been knocked off a horse many times... I've blacked out a few times... it's normal.
But when I went to get up- to find him - I couldn't put weight on my right leg - and my right arm is all cut up.
So I crawled around a little -trying to make my way back... but it hurt so bad I just decided to sit here against this tree praying to God they found me before nightfall.
But I knew they wouldn't get worried until nightfall - and once night hit - that's when things got dangerous.
I heard rustling - I assumed it was Spirit running around - but I looked around and saw nothing.
"Bailey!" A voice said before I felt something grab me.
"God, what are you doing? Where is Spirit?" Johnny asked, standing behind Zack who was assessing my wounds.
"I'm just chillin." I said coolly.
"Then let's fucking go- I'm fucking tired." Johnny said walking away.
"Johnny, we have to find Spirit." I glared at him. Now was not the time for one of our fights.
"He's probably already back home."
"Can you walk?" Zack asked lightly. "Did you hit your head? Did you black out?" his hands held me still as he looked me over, he moved the hair out of my face so his eyes met mine – he wanted an answer. Was he actually concerned?
"No, well yes...but- my leg.." I said quietly, embarrassed that I was hurt. How could I do this? How could this happen? The day before thanksgiving!
"How about I wrap my arm around you... I'll support you... We'll look for Spirit on our way back - okay?"
"Okay. What if we don't find him?" I asked as he helped me up. I slunk into his side, not being able to hold myself up. his grip on me was strong but soft, he was warm and he smelled good – walking back could take forever and I wouldn’t mind.
"Then tomorrow is a fresh day, we'll have all day to search for him." He smiled.
Johnny had already started home, I wasn't surprised.
"Ow." I muttered as I took a few steps. Even with me bearing all my weight on Zack- pain still radiated through my body making me dizzy. "Zack... I can't." I said as I allowed myself to fall to the ground.
"Come on Bailey, We're almost there." He said trying to help me back up.
"Hey, guys!" Johnny called back. We were now at the edge of the field - he was up at the barn. It was just a hair under dark.
"You are no fucking help!" Zack yelled back up at him.
"I'm sorry." I said looking up at him.
He didn't say anything before bending down and picking me up - I was shocked but at the same time I was relieved because I don't think I could take walking anymore.
I clutched onto his shirt as he walked us up to the barn, where he showed me Spirit was safe and in his stall - I was beyond thankful for that. Then he carried me up to the house- everyone stared, everyone asked a hundred questions a piece -but Zack ignored everyone and took me to the bathroom.
"Why you carrying Baywee?" Lena asked all sleepy eyed.
"She got hurt." Zacky said with a small smile. "Do you wanna do me a favor?"
"Yes!" She beamed.
"Go get mommy and tell her we need her." Zack said as he propped me up on the counter.
Not a few seconds later Aunt Jan came in, along with my mom.
"What happened?" Ma asked before starting to clean me up.
"Something spooked Spirit, I think I broke my ankle."
"This happens every year, every year I'm casting something for you, setting something.. stitching something." Aunt Jan said. "Did you lose consciousness?"
"briefly. I'm fine." I muttered getting dizzy, leaning my weight onto zack who still had a good grip on me. He rubbed my back and I tried to pull away from him but if I moved I was afraid I was gonna throw up all over everybody in the room.
"we'll have to check on you every few hours... What would you do if I wasn't here?" She scolded. "You need to be more careful."
"I'd owe a lot of money due to hospital bills." I said innocently.
About a half an hour later she had my ankle set and wrapped for now - I would have to go to the doctor .. Well I couldn't go tomorrow because it's thanksgiving.... So I'll just have to wait. It’ll be fine.
"Where are your crutches?" Ma asked as Zack helped me off the counter.
"I don't remember where we put them."
"You should just go sit on the couch and rest... dinner is ready - when everyone's done eating I'm sure they'll all go to bed." Ma said walking out.
Zack helped me walk to the couch, then everyone left to go eat dinner.
I wasn't surprised, I mean... This is my family we're talking about. So I sat there with my leg propped up, flicking through channels blindly hoping to find something to watch.
"Here." Zack muttered putting a plate next to me. He didn't say anything else as he sat next to me and ate. It was nice, I mean my own family hadn't even thought to help me or include me - but he joined me and brought food. What was that feeling? Hunger grumbles in my stomach? I never felt hunger like that before… odd.
"You didn't have to.."
"Well, you can't get up and get it." He said with a mouth full of food. “Can’t let you starve.”
"Thank you." I said picking at the food. "You know, I have an old brace like thing from the time I broke my foot... That should work as a good cast instead of me going to the hospital."
"Where is it?" He asked continuing to eat.
"In my closet. If you'll just help me upstairs - I’ll go get it, put it on... pretty sure my crutches are there too."
"Stay here, I'll go get them." He shrugged. "Uh.. which room is yours?"
"You know where Johnny's room is? Go down the hall, on the right."
"You don't mind me looking in your closet?" He asked wearily.
"Nope." I said looking around for a drink.
When he came back down he looked annoyed, I mean I know I don't know him well - but with all the help he's given to me I can't help but want to return the favor.
"You okay?" I asked as he helped me put on the brace.
"Uh..." He said getting quiet. "Yeah."
"Liar." I said nudging him. "Come on, let it out."
"Well, I guess it just annoys the ever living shit out of me that your brother is upstairs sleeping - the whole time we were looking for you he wasn't even worried." Zack sighed.
"John is selfish in many ways. He's an amazing man and brother, but he's a little... well.. self-centered. Especially since he was out drinking, he gets really self-centered then."
"Look at you... You fell off of a horse - you were alone for god knows how long. And me- someone you have just met is paying more attention to you than anyone else."
"Well... My family is not a touchy feeling lovey dovey family, Zack. We're a serious- hard working family. We don't have time for that." I shrugged. "Plus no one needs to worry about me, I’m fine."
"You're ankle is broken and your right arm looks like it's been through the shredder." He said raising an eyebrow at me.
"I'm fine." I said quickly.
"Then, since you're tired, go ahead off to bed. I'll see you in the morning." He said patting my arm. "Goodnight."
Before I could say anything he got up and walked upstairs and into Johnny's room.
I put the boot on, using the crutches as best as I could... but he was right -my arm hurt really bad which wasn't helping. On top of that I was still dizzy and I hadn't even approached the stairs yet.
"Stop it. I didn't mean it." Zack's low husky voice came from above me.
"Mean what?" I asked innocently. "Just going off to bed, I’m fine."
"Oh stop." He said taking my crutches away. "before you hurt yourself."
"You two okay?" Mom asked peeking her head into the living room.
"Of course, Mrs. Seward. I was just gonna take her off to bed." Zack said with a smile.
"Well, thank you." She smiled. "You're such a nice boy."
"You hear that." I whispered at him as she left. "Nice boy."
"Stop you'll make me hurl." He said as he picked me up, being careful not to hurt my arm or my leg. He carried me upstairs and into my room, he laid me down gently on my bed before propping my leg up.
"thanks." I said awkwardly. "You know, you don't have to do this."
"I know." He shrugged as he covered me up. "I want to."
"Why?" I blurted out.
"I like you, I guess. I don't know." He said quickly. "There's just something about you- I .. Never mind."
"No, Go ahead." I urged.
"I Just feel the need to protect you."
"Of all the people in the world, you feel the need to protect me? No offence, but I can probably shoot better than you and out drive you any day."
"I'm sure you can." He laughed. “But who’s gonna be there to carry you when you hurt yourself? Who’s gonna ask if you feel okay? Make sure you’ve eaten and are taking care of yourself?”
"Well, thank you. I've enjoyed you being here more than I originally thought." I smiled as he sat on the edge of my bed. “I appreciate you.”
"I've enjoyed myself more than I thought I would." He admitted. “I appreciate you too.”
"Well, the last guy John brought home- he was an ass." I admitted. "I think we're all relieved you're not an ass."
"What do you mean? Johnny said he hasn't been home since he left?" Zack questioned.
"Well, a few months after he left he came home with this guy..." I said trying to remember.
"They didn't stay long. Maybe an hour." I continued.
"Was it one of the bandmates?"
"No I don't think so." I shook my head. "I don't remember who it was, they were both so drunk."
"Well, you better get as much sleep as you can. It's thanksgiving in the morning... and you know.. your family is a little..."
"Unbearable." I yawned. "Least you're here.."
My eyes started to grow heavy, any other time with any other person I'd've fought to stay awake... but I felt safe around him.
I felt comfortable.
