A familiar earthy scent struck Evie as soon as she stepped onto the band’s bus. The front room of the bus was clouded in hazy smoke that was emanating not only from the glass pipe in JB’s hands, but also from the lit joint currently glowing between Johnny’s lips. A smirk tugged at Evie’s lips as she took in the sight before her, the 7 men all in varying states of intoxication, whether it be from smoke, alcohol, or something else.

“Oh, it’s that kind of party,” Evie said, her voice tinted with amusement as she became the focus of the group.

“It’s a whatever-you-want kind of party,” Jimmy replied, wiggling his eyebrows at the blonde. He lifted his arm and pointed around the room as his next words were spoken, “Beer is in the fridge, liquor is in the cupboard above the sink.”

Evie grabbed herself a beer, knowing that as she had already started drinking, thanks to Dan’s pack down appearances, she was best sticking with something a little more light if she were to indulge in smoking as well.

“What took you so damned long?” Matt B asked her as she took a seat by her fellow techs.

“Wanted to get changed, clearly,” she told him, doing a quick wave of her hand over body, “and then I had a cigarette. Is that ok, mum?”

“Asshole,” he retorted, a smile on his own face as they bantered.

“You love it,” she replied, her smile mirroring his as she bumped his arm with her elbow. Before their conversation could develop any further, they were interrupted.

“Where did you get those pants?”

A confused Evie turned around, her attention now on Johnny. Her eyes furrowed, confused as to why he was asking about her pants, of all things. “What?” She asked, needing clarification.

“Where did you get those pants?” He asked again, receiving a ‘what the fuck, short shit’ from Jimmy and creating a room full of laughter from everyone else.
“I don’t remember. Probably Target, or something,” she answered, truly having no memory of where she purchased these particular sweats. “Why?”

Instead of answering, quickly passed the blunt to Zacky and walked away from the group, towards the bunk section of the bus. Everyone was quiet as they awaited his return, equally as confused as Evie, the only noise coming from the TV screen where Matt S and Dan had currently paused their game.

“Ah ha!” They all heard from the depths of the bus before Johnny returned to the front of the bus. In his hands he held a replica of Evie’s sweatpants, a proud smile on his face. The group busted out laughing as the bassist dropped his jeans to the floor and put on the newly found sweats.

“I knew I had seen them before!” He said triumphantly, a huge grin on his face as Evie stood next to him, giggling at their now matching outfits. It was even funnier as Johnny’s black tee matched with Evie’s black tank top and black hoody.

“Why do you guys have matching pants?” Brian asked, walking on to the bus and becoming immediately confused as he noticed the new twins.

“Ask her!” Johnny said, his voice laced with laughter of his own as he joined in with everyone else laughing. Their attention went to Evie, awaiting an answer.
“I always buy men’s sweatpants. So much more comfy, plus, you guys get decent size pockets,” she replied, shrugging as if it were nothing. “I mean, they are only pants.”

“I can’t believe you guys have matching pants!” Jimmy wheezed, still finding the entire situation quite hilarious. “And how much better they look on Evie!”

“Oh course they look better on her,” Brian said, rolling his eyes at his friend.“She is taller than 5 fucking foot.”

“Ha ha,” Johnny said, reaching over and shoving Brian before returning to his seat. “It just always has to come back to height with you guys.”

The statement introduced a whole new round of laughter from the rest of the group, Evie having to suppress her own chuckle at the shorter man’s words. Brian walked over to her, handing the packet of cigarettes back to her.

“Thanks. You were right, I needed another,” he told her quietly, giving her a small appreciative smile.

“No worries. Any time,” she told him, placing the pack in the deep pockets. Realising what she was doing, she raised her voice to the rest of the bus to illustrate her point. “See, pockets.”

Evie returned to her seat next to the Berry boys, and Brian quickly retreated through the bus and into the bunks. Accepting a fairly new joint from Matt, she took a lungful, holding the smoke before shakily letting it slip between her lips and join the rest of the smoke hanging low in the bus.

“Everyone on board?” A voice asked them, the driver for the band’s bus joining the crew at last.

“Aye, Capt’n,” Jimmy yelled out in response, giving him the go ahead to start the journey.

“What about Bruce and Dave?” Evie asked, having realised they were the only two remaining crew members that had yet to join the ‘party’.

“They don’t usually join us,” Matt B told her, accepting the joint back from between her fingertips. “They usually call back home after the shows, checking in with their families.”

Evie nodded in understanding and then felt the first lurch of the bus. They were off to Oklahoma at last!

4 hours later, everyone was very relaxed, spread out over the bus as they dealt with their intoxication. Evie had taken possession of an entire couch section, having traded the prime position with Zacky only 20 minutes ago. He had driven a hard bargain, and had only relented his seat to the woman when she had offered head scratches in return of the seat. He had instantly accepted, and was now seated on the floor, his eyes shut in happiness as Evie scratched his scalp. Being high, the sensations her nails were creating were that much better, almost lulling him to sleep as he sat.

“No way it would happen in our lifetime,” Johnny said, replying to Jimmy’s previous prediction of interplanetary colonisation.

“Dude, it totally will! Just think how fast technology is developing,” Brian chipped in, agreeing with Jimmy. “Astronauts are going into space all the time now, just to test science shit. They have space travel down now.”

“Yeah, but that is totally different to colonising a planet,” Johnny replied, shaking his head vigorously as he tried to get his point across. “How many movies have there been of disasters in space? It just won’t happen.”

“It will totally happen, I don’t see why you don’t get that!” Jimmy said, exasperated with Johnny. It was fair enough, the conversation had been going on for at least 20 minutes now, the group circling around to the same points over and over.

“I wouldn’t go,” Evie piped up, trying to get the conversation moving.

“What?!” Jimmy asked, taken aback by her words.

“I would not volunteer to colonise another planet,” she repeated, tilting her head back so she could see the others. A look of confusion covered all three of their faces.

“Why not? It would be so cool to start life on another world,” Jimmy asked her, having to know why she wouldn’t want to be part of something so life changing.

“There is too much I couldn’t leave behind,” she replied simply, looking back at the ceiling before rising into a seated position. She heard Zacky make a whining noise, getting her attention to start scratching his head again.

“That’s such a lame answer,” Jimmy said, blowing a raspberry to show his dissatisfaction.

“True, though. It would be hard to leave my family and friends not knowing if I would see them again,” she told him, shrugging. He made another noise of disagreement before she continued. ”Plus, do you know how much stuff we have perfected here? We sure as shit wouldn't be doing this stuff. There would be be no country-wide music tours, no getting high for the fun of it, or stopping wherever to crave your munchie madness.”

“No Taco Bell?” He asked, eyes wide in realisation. Only 40 minutes ago had they stopped to refuel the drummer, finally giving in to his annoying begging and pleas.

“That is what you worry about? No Taco Bell?” Zacky piped up, finally finding his voice again now Evie had stopped scratching his head. He was entirely too comfortable in his previous position, close to falling into a blissful sleep thanks to the movement of the bus, his level of intoxication, and the soothing motions of Evie’s hand raking through his hair.

“Can you imagine it?! It would be hell!” He replied, making the others chuckle at his exclamation.

“That’s why you gotta think these things through, Giant,” Evie told him, patting him on the arm as she rose to her feet and walked past him to make her way to the bathroom.

She moved through the front area of the bus, passing JB who was rummaging in the cupboards for something sweet, stepping over Matt B’s legs (as he had also relocated to the floor to stop his motion sickness) and finally making it to the bunk area. She had to stifle a giggle at the mess, typical boys. Every bunk she passed was unkempt, blankets and pillows strewn everywhere, some clothes chucked haphazardly both within the bunk, and draped over the edges, some even making their way to the floor.
Evie moved through the mess, trying very hard to avoid stepping on anything and to stay upright. As soon as she had stood up, every beer and every puff of smoke seemed to hit her all at once and made her realise that it was time to slow down or she would be in some trouble. She knew her body well enough that she had hit her limit, and any more would result in an awful hangover tomorrow.

Finally reaching the bathroom, Evie went in, noticing it, too, was identical to the one in her bus. As she sat on the toilet, her head hazy and swimming, she made a mental note to find a bottle of water once she was back out in the front room. Stifling yet another giggle to herself, this one bubbling up due to the conversation she was having with herself, she finished up, washing her hands and opening the door once more.

Once back in the bunk area, her face flushed as she realised there was someone waiting for their turn in the bathroom.

“Please tell me you only just got here and didn’t hear me pee,” she blurted out, her mouth working faster than her internal filter, letting the words explode into the air and creating an awkward tension between them.

“Not even 3 seconds ago,” Brian replied after laughing at the plea of the woman in front of him. He couldn’t help but laugh once again as the look on her rosey face turned from worried to relief almost instantaneously.

“Thank god,” she muttered out, letting out a breath. She watched as Brian smiled and turned away slightly, starting to look through one of the messy bunks.

“Would it have been a problem?” He asked, turning his head slightly so his voice could carry over to Evie, and not get lost in the depths of the bunk.

“Huh?” She questioned elegantly, her train of thought being taken from their conversation to observing the indecent amount of items that man had managed to shove in one bunk.

“Would it have been a problem if I heard you pee?” He asked again, emerging from his bunk with a smirk on his face, and his jacket in his hands. He slipped the coat on, hiding his thoroughly inked arms from view.

“Well, it is not ideal,” she replied, her blush not only returning to her pale cheeks, but rising to a hotter temperature.

“The size of these busses, I’m pretty sure everyone has heard everyone pee at least once, especially after a big night. I know first hand that most of those guys don’t even remember to shut the door,” he told her, laughing at the look on her face. She finally made eye contact with him again, a look of disgust and realisation in her eyes.

“I didn’t even think of that!” She admitted, thankful that they were not far from a hotel, so she wouldn’t have to put up with midnight whizzers on the bus.

“And I’m sure it won’t be long until you realise that peeing isn’t the only sounds you will hear during the nights. It does get awful lonely on the road,” he continued, unable to help himself. Watching the ever-changing expressions on Evie’s face was too entertaining, he was enjoying himself more than he would have thought.

“Oh man, I don’t even want to think about that!” She exclaimed, putting her hands over her ears to stop his words. She scrunched up her nose, knowing that he was right, they were human after all. She had never had to deal with that before, the Halestorm van being far to small and intimate for anyone to even think that any form of self gratification would be passable. They were squished on top of one another, two people up front, the rest having to fight for space in the bench seats behind. It was far from the luxury of this bus, having your own bed, your own space to do as you please.

Brian reached out and lowered her hands from her ears, promising that he would stop saying ‘perverted’ things, her words, not his. A small silence fell between them, Evie waiting to see if he would make good on his promise or not, Brian trying his best to keep it. He bit his lip, trying to stop the statement that they went further than just a solo session in those bunks. He didn't think he should scar her any further, so he decided to change the topic.

“So, uh, I just wanted to say thanks again,” he said, this time his words coming out a little more hesitant and stuttered than previously. Evie looked at him confused, unsure as to what he was referencing. “For lending me a smoke the parking lot.”

“Oh,” she said, ever the wordsmith. “No problem. Like I said, you looked like you needed some more calming down.”

“Yeah, I really did,” he confirmed, running his hand through his hair. Just remembering the conversation made his mood turn, the anxiety and frustration returning once more.

“You look like you could use more calming down now,” she said, taking in his suddenly tense posture. “You should get another joint from Jimmy. That will help.”

“Nah, I'm sure I have had more than enough,” he replied, once more taken aback by her observant nature.

“Dude, me too,” she told him, stuffing a giggle again. “It all kinda hit me as I stood up.”

“Isn't that the best feeling?” He asked, actually enjoying being able to feel the moment where your intoxication peaks.

“No way! It's too much all at once, you gotta ease your way in,” she replied, disagreeing with him completely.

“I’m coming through! If you guys are fucking, please keep it in the bunks!” Jimmy shouted, sticking his arm through the curtain and waving it around before he pulled it open.

“Jimmy!” Evie exclaimed, her face once again heating up and a deep blush appearing on her cheeks. “Don't be a perv!”

“I'm trying not to perv! I've seen Gates tiny white ass too many times already,” he said, erupting into a fit of giggles as he walked into the bunk area. He had his hands now clamped across his eyes, avid he would not see any naked Brian again.

“We are just talking, man. You can lower your hands,” Brian told him, giving the drummer a hard punch in the arm for being so crass. “And my ass is not tiny, thank you!”

“Well how was I meant to know that? You guys have been hiding away from us for AGES! And Evie just told you that it is 'too much’ and to ‘ease your way in’. I made an educated guess!” Jimmy defended, slowly lowering one hand to make sure Brian was telling him the truth. In front of him he saw a bright red Evie, her arms crossed as she learnt against the bunks, then opposite her was an unamused Brian, his arms also folded. A cheeky grin appeared on Jimmy’s face as he took in the pair. “This is all too staged. You clearly just jumped apart as I made my announcement.”

“Whatever, man,” Brian told him, rolling his eyes at his best friend. He looked at Evie and pantomimed 'he is crazy’. She tried to hold back a smile, though it eventually shone through regardless of her attempts.

“Well kiddies, don't have too much fun, uncle Jimmy will be just in here,” Jimmy said, pointing at the two before entering the tiny bathroom and shutting the door on them.

“Don’t mind him. He is out of his mind,” Brian told her once Jimmy had disappeared. A muffled ‘hey!’ came from the small room, making both Brian and Evie laugh once more.

They both made their way back to the front of the bus, returning to their previous seats. Zacky had sat back on the couch after Evie left, meaning she now had to sit upright like a normal person. She plonked herself down, ignoring her own advice and taking a small hit of the blunt Zacky offered before rejoining the conversation between Johnny and JB.
