The main theme from Star Wars played loudly, starting Evie from her light slumber. She glanced around, slightly startled as she tried to regain her barings. She was definitely not in her bunk, or in her own bed, that she could rule out within seconds. It took a minute for her brain to kick into gear and remind her that she was in Brian’s living room, clearly letting herself get too relaxed as she awaited a call from Larry. Glancing around, she found her phone, it was still perched on the arm of the couch she had managed to sink down and lay upon. No wonder she fell asleep! Evie frowned, noting that there was still no message from Larry regarding her housing for the next few nights.
Looking around the room, she located the remote, turning the volume of the TV down as the Imperial Star Destroyer floated across the screen. As much as she enjoyed a good Star Wars movie marathon, she thought better of indulging at the moment, and stood from the couch. As soon as she stood, she became conflicted. Should she go look for Brian? Would it be weird to search him out? Or should she just stay where she was until Larry finally contacted her? She felt that it would be a little rude to start nosing around his house as it wasn’t like he had even invited her over, but was forced into sheltering her for an undetermined amount of time.

Evie finally reached a decision, and with a small amount of determination she headed towards the kitchen, once again taking in the gorgeous furnishings of Brian’s home as she went. She couldn’t help but presume that he had enlisted help in designing and filling the spaces, and she mentally commended whoever had taken the reigns of the project as the house was both beautiful, yet homey. As she walked through the kitchen, she couldn’t help but run her fingers over the benchtop, slightly marvelling at the fact it was made of pure marble.

She opened the door to outside, quickly sliding her body through before quietly closing it behind her and walking onto the the grass. She took in her surroundings, the ocean view, the lush lawn, the manicured garden beds and the perfect sized covered patio to the left of the entryway. On the wooden decking sat a table with enough chairs for at least 10 people surrounding it, a barbeque against the fence, and a small outdoor kitchen next to that. She could already imagine the band and crew scattered around the yard, some in the pool, some on the deck while Brian stood at the grill cooking for his friends and family. She imagined the late nights of drinking they all indulged in, conversations getting deeper and deeper as they lounged around and the sun got lower and lower before it made its reappearance hours later. Evie couldn’t help wishing that she was included in one of those get togethers. There would be no work to think of, no travelling the next day, nothing stopping her from actually enjoying herself as much as she wanted. What surprised her was the vision she had of standing next to Brian at the grill, handing him another beer with a kiss before he wrapped his spare arm around her, turning to continue his conversation with Matt as if it was nothing out of the ordinary. She jumped when the bang of the back door snapped her back into reality and away from her daydream. A blush rose to her face as she watched Brian exit the house, embarrassed by the story her mind had concocted. The scenario was nothing but absurd, unrealistic, and heartaching. Though she had always dreamed about her future, this was the first time in her 25 years being alive that the dream had not been about where she would be, or the state of her career, but about who she would be sharing her life with. “Here you are,” Brian said. “I noticed you had moved from the couch, but your bags were still at the door.” “Yeah. I may or may not have fallen asleep, too,” she admitted sheepishly, watching as he made his way over the patio setting and sitting on a seat close to the ashtray. “Came out here for some fresh air.”
“Want some nicotine with that air?” He asked, picking up his cigarette packet and holding it open to her.

Evie nodded, slowly making her way over and taking one from the pack. Brian followed her action, slipping the stick between his lips and flicking his lighter on. He held the flame out to her, letting her light up first before raising the fire to the end of his cigarette. He placed the items back on the table and lent back in his chair. Evie made her way to the seat beside him, the pair now sitting at the corner of the table to share the one ashtray that sat upon the top. She let herself get distracted in the view, the sun now setting over the watery horizon and bathing the sky in shades of yellow, orange and pinks.

“Nice, right?” He asked rhetorically, watching as she looked over the ocean with a look of wonder on her face.

“It is beautiful,” she replied, not letting her gaze move from the scene before her. “No wonder you guys love it here so much.” “It’s the best place in the world,” Brian told her, moving his attention from the woman beside him and to the view as well.

Sometimes it took a few weeks away from home for him to remember just why he loved Huntington so much, and the thing that had made tonight stand out so much more was the company. Seeing Evie’s honest reaction to something as trivial as a sunset sparked that reoccuring warmth in Brian that he had felt a few times today. The first time it had sparked was when he had seen her in his home, and it happened again when he had woken from his nap and looked over to see her sleeping peacefully on the couch opposite. There was something so… soothing about her presence. It was just something that felt so natural.

The pair smoked their cigarettes in silence, each of them unknowingly trying to sort through similar emotions and feelings that had bloomed since departing the bus earlier that morning. Brian was struggling to come to terms with the idea that it wasn’t just today's events that had lead to the sudden attraction to Evie and her presence within his home, but a culmination of the past 12 days of interactions and events. Evie was consumed with trying to sort through various memories and fractions of time from this tour, moments between her and Brian that she had previously dismissed but had enough impact to stay with her and aid in the creation of her Brian-centered daydream.

Simultaneously, they reached for the ashtray to snuff out the end of their cigarette, Brian yelidling first and letting Evie have full access to the tray. She murmured a quiet ‘thank you’, her mind still a jamble as she extingued the smoke. As she finished, she rose to her feet again. “I am just going to check my phone, see if Larry called while I was out here,” she said, finding a great excuse to run away and get some distance between herself and Brian. She just needed a small break, enough time for her brain to get a grip and put her feelings back in a box she could cast to the back recess of her mind.

She made her way quickly back though the house and in to the living room. She grabbed her phone from the arm of the couch, scowling at the blank screen. What the fuck was Larry doing? How long could it really take for him to organise a damned hotel room? Frustrated, she sighed deeply and made her way to the powder room. She used the facilities before splashing some water on her face to try and wash away all of her issues. It was in vain, she knew, but at least it gave her something to do. She was starting to feel a little lost, overwhelmed and betrayed by her own feelings, unsure of exactly where she was meant to go from here.

Evie stared at her own reflection, taking in the purpling bags under her eyes, her ‘bed’ hair (thanks to her nap on the couch), and her worrylined brow. Her pale complexion was even even lighter than usual thanks to the winter they were just coming out of and the long days of traveling for the tour. Her physical appearance was starting to mirror the chaos that was in her mind, neither part of her reflecting herself at her full potential. In an attempt to rectify this, Evie pulled her hair out of the braid she had woven last night while semi-high and ran her fingers through the blonde locks to try and tame the waves. There was not much she could do about her tired eyes without a professional makeup artist, so she had to leave herself looking pale and exhausted. You win some, you lose some, she thought, making herself chuckle at the cliche she was using to make herself feel better.

She took in a long breath, held it for a few seconds and exhaled slowly. She repeated the action twice and felt herself start to calm down, her mind now slowing from a mile a minute and allowing her to get a hold on her thoughts. She stared at herself in the mirror once more while she had a mini pep talk with herself, reminding her that there was nothing she could do at the moment, and she just had to go with the flow. She needed to have faith in Larry that his delay in finding her a hotel room was for a reason yet to be revealed, and that there was no reason she should be freaking out.

Evie finally let herself out of the powder room, feeling at least 50% better than she did before her mini retreat. The time to herself let her reset her brain, turning off the worry and overthinking and setting up a calmer, easier going Evie. She heard noise in the kitchen, and turned into the open space to find Brian rummaging through one of the cupboards, his back to her as he searched. Without realising, Evie let her eyes wander over Brian, taking him in as he was distracted. As much as she tried, she couldn’t tear her eyes away from his form as he moved around, Calm Evie clearly much more of a perv than Normal Evie. She took a seat at one of the bar stools, crossing her arms and laying them on the counter in front of her.

“You disappeared on me again,” he said without turning around, his voice suddenly filling the space and making Evie jump slightly. She hadn’t realised that he even noticed that she had entered the room.

“Just for a bit,” she replied vaguely, not about to let him in on her bathroom habits once again. The recollection of her first proper hang out on the bus was more than enough to start her cheeks blushing.

“Any news from Larry?” He asked, finally straightening up and turning around. He held a bottle of wine in his hands, a victorious look on his face indicating that it was what he had been intently searching for. “Nope, nothing,” Evie replied, flashing him the blank screen of her phone before placing it on the tabletop next to her.

“Well then I guess we can just fill in time by drinking,” Brian suggested with a smile on his face. Evie giggled, slightly shaking her head as Brian went to another cupboard and removed two large wine glasses.

“I am starting to see that it is a common theme with you guys,” she told him, the smile remaining on her features.

“Only just starting to? Stick with us and you will see exactly how correct that statement is,” Brian replied before realising that the words emphasised that she was not a permanent fixture in their tour lives, let alone their home lives. He quickly tried to move past it, deciding that ignoring the temporary nature of her situation would be the easiest route. “Come on, you’re missing the best part of the sunset.”

Brian moved past her, glasses in one hand, wine in the other and opened the sliding door outside. He motioned her to walk through first, trying to be gentlemanly. She obliged his wordless request, taking herself back outside to watch the rest of the sunset. She thought it had been gorgeous before, the sky lit up with pinks and purples, but it was even better now. Mindlessly she made her way back over to the patio setting, taking a seat while she observed the changing sky. There was a sliver of orange still on the horizon, but the blends of light and dark blues was breathtaking. A few stars had already started to poke through the blanket of blue, glimmering faintly as the sun continued to set.

Brian handed her a glass of wine before taking a seat in the chair he had recently vacated. Once again they were silent as they watched the rest of the sunset, sipping slowly at the delicious red in the glasses and content with taking in the view.

“Thanks for taking me in today,” Evie told him, breaking herself from the spell now the sun had completely disappeared, the sky now darkening by the second. “Seeing how long it is taking Larry to organise a room, I would have been screwed if you didn't.”

“You don’t need to thank me, Evie. It’s no problem,” he said, trying to brush it off. “It’s not like I would have let you just stand outside waiting.”

“Even so,” she challenged, “I know it isn’t exactly ideal for you. Your first of only two nights at home, and I am crashing the party.”

There were so many words on the tip of Brian’s tongue, so many that he had to bite back before he let too much slip and he embarrassed himself. He bided his time by taking a sip of wine, trying to reorganise his mind so he wouldn't start word vomiting his feelings. “Seriously, Evie. It is not a problem, I swear,” he replied, staying safe and neutral while trying to assuage any feelings of guilt she had about still being in his house. He was proud of himself, the seemingly simple, boring reply had taken far too many brain cells to put together.

“If you’re sure,” she said, finally turning to look at him and see if he was being honest. She assessed the look on his face, finally deciding to take him at his word and believe him. Evie took a sip of wine, absentmindedly continuing to look at Brian, his attention now on the view. She took him in, everything from his relaxed posture to the tiny bit of fuzz growing on his chin, his chocolate brown eyes to the tiny smirk on his lips. Her heart stopped, she had once again been caught by Brian, but this time staring at him! Immediately she felt her face heat up, and she knew she had no chance of keeping cool. She had only had a few sips of wine, so she couldn’t even try to cover it up with being drunk!

“Uh, I was…er,” she stuttered, her mind absolutely blank as Brian’s smirk turned into a full smile. “Yeah?” He asked, urging her to continue.

“Um, I was… looking at… your tattoos!” She exclaimed, trying her best to grasp on to any single thing that could possibly make sense. Her gaze bounced over him, refusing to make eye contact again. “Oh really?” He asked, deciding that he should probably give her a little mercy and pretend that he had only seen her looking at his arms. A small piece of him was glowing inside, realising that she had been looking at him, and not only just a brief glance, but actually observing him, potentially checking him out. He took a sip of his wine, watching with amusement as Evie started nodding vigorously.
“Yup. Definitely,” she said, doubling down on her lame excuse. She praised her brain for at least coming up with something, but Brian seemed less than accepting of her reasoning. She needed to push past this, get his attention off her. “So, um… what are your tattoos?”

Brian, unable to stop himself, laughed. Her gaze continued to flicker between his and everything surrounding the pair before stopping on his exposed forearm. He had to give her a little credit, sticking to her story, as ridiculous as it was, and trying to pull his attention from the adorable blush on her features. He decided to give her a break.

“Just monsters and shit,” he replied, putting his wine glass down before looking down at his own inked arms and twisting them around to look at the art as well. Considering they were on his body, it was weird how very little he actually looked at the tattoos. “Nothing too exciting.”

“They are done beautifully,” she said, staring at the colourful pieces that made up his sleeve. “The colours are still so bright!”

“I was pretty lucky with this artist,” he admitted, thinking back to when he had first decided to work with a new tattoo artist. It was a huge risk as the tattoos would be very visible, but it had worked out in his favour. “Yours are pretty great, too.”

“Thanks,” she replied bashfully, the conversation having unexpectedly turned to her own work. “Anything interesting in there?” He asked, motioning her arms. She held them out to him after placing her wine glass next to his, the pair looking over the colourful pieces. “I think all tattoos are interesting,” she answered. “This sleeve is just things I like, really. There is a tiger lily, a pin up, a TARDIS - yes, shut up, I am a nerd - and a bunch of little cartoon characters from my childhood. Just a mis-mash of randomness.”

“A TARDIS?” Brian asked, the smirk once again on his face. Evie blushed a little again. “Yes. Like I said, shut up,” she told him, refusing to give him the satisfaction of admitting the depth of her Dr Who love.

“Ok then,” Brian surrendered, knowing that he would definitely be bringing that up again. He let it slide for now, giving her false hope that it would be the last time they spoke of it, and instead tried to keep her talking about her other sleeve. His hand reached out and touched the lightning bolt on her left wrist. “Now I know what this sleeve is about.”
Evie was slightly speechless as Brian’s fingertips trailed the length of the lightning bolt before moving through the Milky Way depiction and up over the face that was permanently drawn on her bicep. She was completely unprepared for his touch and she fought herself not to rip her arm from his light grasp in shock. She took a deep breath, enjoying the sensation of his fingertips far too much already. He shuffled towards the edge of his seat as his attention was completely taken by the portrait. “The Thin White Duke, hey?” He asked her rhetorically, trailing over the spaceship, the glass orb and the few quotes before settling on the image he could not place with the rest. “I don’t get this one.”

“My depiction of Lady Stardust,” Evie answered, looking at the tattoo with a fond smile. The bust was traditionally stylised, the curly hair made from thick lines while the features were quite minimal and plain. In an homage to the man himself, Evie insisted that the eyeshadow of the androgynous character reflected David Bowie’s heterochromia. Underneath the image were the words ‘Yes he was alright’.

Understanding overtook the curious look on Brian’s face as he continued to look at the sleeve, discovering the little bits and pieces that were dedicated to the musician. He had so many questions for Evie, wanting to ask why David Bowie, why were there still gaps, why had she devoted a whole sleeve to a single musician. He hadn’t realised how close he had scooted towards her while he was taking in the ink until he finally looked up,tearing his gaze from the tattoos and to the woman they were tattooed on, to find himself face to face with Evie, mere inches between them. His stomach flipped, an army of butterflies taking up residence and stopping him from moving away from the temptation before him.

Evie bit the inside of her lip as her gaze flickered between his eyes and his lips, trying her best not be intimidated by Brian’s unwavering stare. She felt his hand slide from her forearm to rest on top of her hand, his long fingers curling around into her palm.

“You are the first person ever refer to him as the Thin White Duke,” she told him, her words coming out whisper quiet. She couldn’t be sure if her voice was so low due to proximity, or the revelation that Brian knew his David Bowie that well. She was deeply impressed, which didn’t help her growing feelings.

Before she could think any longer she bridged the gap between them, her lips meeting his in an abrupt, yet gently kiss. Without her permission, her free hand lifted and rested on his shoulder while his cupped her jaw. Their lips moved together slowly, neither of them needing to rush the moment, content with just savouring the physical connection between them.

They slowly pulled apart, Brian resting his forehead against Evie’s while they took a beat to catch their breath. Evie refused to let her mind whirl back into overthinking mode, trying her best to shut it down and just enjoy the moment. She didn’t need answers today, she just needed to finally let her heart take over.
