Unconditionally

Paradise can't be far

Zack shifted underneath the blankets, Something wasn’t quite right. He fluttered his eyes open, looking around. This wasn’t his room. He threw the blankets back, looking down. He was still dressed; Everything except his shoes. He quickly looked over to the other side of the bed. It was empty. He caught the faint smell of food as he sat up, moving out of the bed, before making his way downstairs.

“Good morning, sleep head.” He heard Charlotte say from the kitchen. He turned toward her. “Did you sleep okay?”

Zack moved deeper into the kitchen, wiping his face with his hands. “I.. I think I did.” He said, looking at her a bit confused.

She chuckled a little, pouring him a cup of coffee. “You think?” she repeated questionably. “Coffee?”

He nodded with a smile, taking the coffee that she offered him. “Umm.. Did we…” he paused. “Did uh…”

“Did we have sex?” she asked with a smile. “No. We didn’t. You were way too gone for that.”

Zack nodded in relief. “How did I get here?” he asked.

She sat down across from him. “You must have been pretty hammered.” she sighed. “More hammered than I thought.” She laughed a bit.

Zack looked at her waiting for an answer. “Well, How did I get here?” he took a sip of his coffee.

“ You were drunker than hell, and I knew there was no way you were driving home by yourself and you were too drunk to tell me where you lived.” she said. “So I brought you here.”

He nodded. “What about Brian or someone? They could have taken me home.”

Charlotte gripped her coffee cup between her hands. “They left quite a while before we did.”

Zack looked at her apologetically. “I’m sorry. I don’t want you to think that I’m upset or anything. I just.. I didn’t expect this.” he admitted. “I wasn’t planning on going last night to hook up with anyone, ya know?”

Charlotte nodded. “Oh I know. You told me everything last night when you were downing, I think it was, your fourth or fifth round of shots.” she smiled, reaching over touching his hand. “Nothing happened.. And I’m almost positive that you’re not looking to hook up.”

Zack nodded. “I didn’t mean to dump that on you.” he said sipping his coffee again. “I was drunk and when I drink I do crazy shit.” he laughed a bit.

Charlotte chuckled. “What did I tell you before we went into the bar?” she asked. “I told you that if you needed to talk I was there to listen.”

Zack nodded. “You did, indeed.” he looked at her leaning over the counter a bit. “Now can I ask you something?”

Charlotte looked at him. “Anything.”

Zack grinned. “Where is your bathroom?; because I really have to piss.” he chuckled a little.

Charlotte laughed, face palming. “Oh yeah. It’s right down the hall; second door to the left.”

“I’ll be right back.” Zack said, getting up and making his way down the hallway.

Charlotte sat at the island in her kitchen, thinking about the night before and everything that he had shared with her. She felt so bad for him. He seemed like a sweet guy and she could tell that he deserved better than what his ex had given him. She wanted to show him that there was good in people. The night before he had told her everything. Even though he probably didn’t remember what he exactly said, she would never forget it.

She moved from the stool, walking toward the stove, spooning out food, putting it on a plate. She heard the bathroom door close. She grabbed a fork from the drawer and turned back to the island. “I hope you’re hungry.” she said with a smile, sitting the plate down in front of him. “I wasn’t sure what to cook, I didn’t know what you liked.”

Zack smiled. “This is fine.” he said. “It’s perfect actually.” He looked up at her, locking eyes with hers. He was always told the eyes were the windows to the soul. That statement was correct. He could tell that she was a loving person. He could have kissed her at that moment, then he realized what he was doing. “Um.. Yeah. This is good.” he said, taking a bite of his eggs.

Charlotte smiled, even though her heart was breaking a bit. She knew it was going to take time for him to see the real her, but she was more than willing to take that time to let him discover that. “I’m glad you like it.” She made her way back over to the stove, fixing herself a plate, before returning to the island, sitting down across from him.

“What’s your favorite color?” Zack asked.

Charlotte looked at him confused as to why he would ask such a random question. “Blue. Why?” she smirked.

He shrugged. “You should paint your kitchen blue.” he said, taking another bite of food. This was his way of getting to know her better.

She smiled a bit, looking around the kitchen. “That would be nice.” she agreed. “You would help me, right?” she asked, trying to see if he would want to spend some time with her.

He nodded, swallowing a bite of food. “I would.” he said, before taking a sip of his coffee.

She smiled. “Well, it looks like we have a project to do then.” she spoke, forking around in her plate. “What’s your favorite color?”

“Red.” he replied.

“We should paint your kitchen red.” she chuckled.

He laughed a little. “I don’t think that would look too good.” he said. “My house is mostly marble and tile and it’s very… bland.” he confessed.

She smiled. “Then it needs a red kitchen to spice things up a bit.” She took another bite of her food, raising her eyebrows at him, as she made a point.

He smiled. “I’ll think about it, but we should probably take one project at a time, don’t you think?”

She nodded in agreement. “Fair enough.” she said. “So, What’s your last name, Zack?” she asked.

He sat his coffee cup back down onto the counter after getting a sip. “Baker.” he stated. “It’s gay, I know.” he laughed. “Yours?”

“Thomas.” she replied. “It’s fagalicious.” she laughed.

Zack laughed along with her. “That puts mine at a close second.” he grinned.

Charlotte, looked over at him as she finished her plate. “What are your plans for today, Baker?” she questioned.

He thought for a moment with a shrug. “Nothing that I know of.” he answered. “What about you?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know.. I thought about going out and working the corner; Hustling, ya know?” She tried to keep a serious face.

He looked at her with a serious face. “That sounds fun. Mine if I join you?”

Charlotte laughed. “I can’t deal with you.” She said. “I can’t have you stealing all my profit out there with your sexy ass.”

Zack laughed sitting his fork down. “Oh please.” he said. “Don’t flatter me.”

“I’m not.” she said. “You’re my sexy ‘friend’.” she air quoted. “Right?”

Zack smiled. “I am.”

I loved this chapter so much! The ending was perfect! I can’t wait for more

This is so cute and light so far and I'm really enjoying it! I just went through a nasty breakup myself, so Zack saying that all he wanted to do was move on and pack up Gena's shit was super relatable! I'm looking forward to seeing how Zack warms up to Charlotte!
