Unconditionally

Got a couple bottles but a couple ain't enough

Zack got into the car with Charlotte, starting the ignition. He was skeptical about leaving Brian alone on the side of an open road, but figured he could take care of himself. Besides.. He did put him in this situation. So what if something gets him. Zack chucked to himself at the thought.

“What’s so funny?” Charlotte asked as she buckled her seat belt.

Zack shook his head. “It’s nothing.” he said.

Charlotte shifted, slightly turning toward him, as he turned the car around. “You’re cute, do you know that?” she stated.

Zack looked at her with an awkward smirk, trying to process what she just said. “Everyone says that.” he said, gripping the steering wheel. He already knew how the ride back was going to be. Another girl that thought he was ‘cute’ was trying to pick him up.

Charlotte pouted a bit. “I’m sure they have.” she said, looking out of the windshield at the highway.

Zack changed the subject. “So… What did Brian tell you about me?” He had to ask. The curiosity had been killing him since she said it earlier.

“Just about how you guys know each other and about the things you guys did when you were younger.” she said. “Just stuff like that.” she grinned.

Zack wasn’t sure if he wanted to know what he told her at this point. There was a lot of shit that Zack did back in the day that he wouldn’t exactly lay out there in front of someone new. If Gena wouldn’t have gone through it with him. He wouldn’t have even told her. “Oh..” he said, turning to glance in her direction.

She smiled a bit, but this time it was different. It was an apologetic smile. Zack knew what was coming next.

“He told me about what happened with your ex.” she stated. “I’m really sorry that she did that to you.” She looked down at her hands, before looking back over at him.

Zack chewed at his lip as she talked. “It’s no big deal.” he said, dryly. “We just weren’t meant for each other, I guess.” he said, forcing a smile, letting her know that he wanted to move on with the night and not worry about that.

Charlotte took the hint, changing the subject. “So, Zack…” she paused.

Zack looked over at her. “Hmm??”

“Are you gonna let me buy you a drink tonight?” she asked with a wide smile.

He smiled a bit. “I don’t know what Brian told you about me, but I’m not one to turn down free booze.” He chuckled, glancing back over at her.

Charlotte giggled. “He didn’t tell me anything like that, but either way, I would still want to buy you a drink.” She smiled.

He looked in her direction once again. “Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around?” he asked with a grin.

She smiled a bit. “So you want to buy me a drink?” she asked with a smirk.

Zack shook his head. “I’m not saying that..”

“So you wouldn’t buy me a drink.” she stated in a playfully offended tone.
“I’m not saying that either..” he sighed. “You know what? Yes. I want to buy you a drink.” he confessed. He knew this was going against everything that he had told Brian, but what was a drink going to hurt right?

He pulled the car into the lot at the bar, shutting off the engine. Neither one of them moved after he did. It was silent, but not like an awkward silence. Finally, she turned towards him.
“You okay?” she asked. She could physically see that he was fine, but had no idea what was going on in his head.

Zack nodded as he chewed at his lip. “Mhmm.” He ran his tongue over his bottom lip. “I’m great.” He turned to her with a one sided smile. “Are you okay?” he asked as his head fell back against the headrest of his seat.

Charlotte smiled. “I’m good.” She looked down at her hands. “I know you don’t know me that well, but I want you to know if you ever need to talk about anything, I’m here for you.” she said, looking back up at him.

He looked at her with a smile. “I appreciate that.” he said. “It’s not often you find someone that is willing to listen to you cry about problems that you can’t fix.”

She reached over resting her hand on top of his. “I’ll always be here for you.” she spoke, just above a whisper. “If you remind me before I get drunk, I’ll give you my number where you can reach me.” she laughed a bit.

Zack chuckled at her statement. “Well, we might want to get that over with now.” he said, pulling this phone from his pocket, unlocking it and handing it to her. “Put her there.”

Charlotte took the phone from him, putting her number in, before giving it back to him. “Anytime you need to talk or you just want to hang out or something, feel free to text me or call.” she said.

“Thank you.” he said, sitting up a bit, reaching for the door handle. “Let’s go get that drink.” he said with a smile.

Charlotte smiled. “Let’s.”

They got out of the car, making their way into the entrance and over to the bar. This wasn’t as awkward as Zack thought it was going to be for himself. He had never had someone that was there for him no matter what. Despite the fact that he said he didn’t want to date anyone, he would patiently wait for a time he needed to her. Just to see if she would come.

I loved this chapter so much! The ending was perfect! I can’t wait for more

This is so cute and light so far and I'm really enjoying it! I just went through a nasty breakup myself, so Zack saying that all he wanted to do was move on and pack up Gena's shit was super relatable! I'm looking forward to seeing how Zack warms up to Charlotte!
