Unconditionally

No more monsters I can breathe again

The next few weeks were more hectic than Zack thought they would be. Having to come in passing with Gena from time to time, but her things were finally out and she was out of his life forever. The hurt had healed to an extent. Matt’s birthday was coming up and they were all planning on going to Johnny’s bar to celebrate. Zack was excited about it since he hadn’t been hardly anywhere since Gena had left.

He sighed sitting down in the chair on the patio, before taking a sip of his beer. He was alone and sometimes he liked that. He did his best thinking while he was outside by the pool by himself. For once there wasn’t anyone to bother him or need something from him. He had gotten used to that for the past few weeks.

His phone vibrated on the table beside him. He reluctantly looked at the screen. It was Gena. He was hesitant at first to answer it, but finally did.
“Hello?”

“Zack.” he heard her say. She was sobbing. “Zack, I”m so sorry.” she cried. Zack sat up a bit.

“What’s going on?” he said, not sounding too concerned. He had a hunch that this was her realizing that this wasn’t what she wanted, and she wanted to come back. He wasn’t having it either way.

“Zack, he hit me.” she stated. “I need to get out of here.” Zack rolled his eyes to himself. He wasn’t letting her back in. He couldn’t. He had finally gotten everything back together and somewhat moved on.

“I can’t help that, Gena. Call the police and get out.” He heard her scoff on the other end.

“Really?” she shot. “After everything we had..? Zack cut her off.

“Yes, Gena!” he yelled. “After everything we had, you cheated on me and chose this abusive person.”

“I can’t believe you, Zachary.” she said in an angry tone.

“I’m not going to just come back, Gena.” he spat. “I’ve moved on.. Without you.” That statement must have gotten her.

He looked at the phone as it beeped, before, setting it back down on the table. She was gone and somehow she was still finding ways to make his life a living hell. He couldn’t honestly say that he cared anymore. Not after what she had done to him. He didn’t feel obligated to care, because the way he looked at it, she never cared either.

He got up, making his way back inside, setting his phone on the kitchen counter as it started vibrating again. It was her again. He ignored it and went to the fridge for another beer. His phone vibrated again. Without looking at who it was he answered it.

“Gena look…” He was cut off by Brian’s voice.

“Gena?” he asked. “I’m not Gena, and what are you doing talking to her anyway?” Zack rubbed the back of his neck.

“I’m not talking to her. She called me earlier crying that her new man had hit her or some shit.” he stated. Brian laughed a little.

“I’m sorry, but she probably deserved it.” he said bluntly. “Hey, listen, do you remember that girl that we saw that night at the bar that was looking at you?” Zack struggled to remember.

“Sort of. Why?” he asked, shifting, tucking the phone between his ear and shoulder, opening his beer.
“You’re not going to believe this, but I ran into her again at the bar last night.” Brian said excitedly. “I invited her to Matt’s party.”

Zack sighed taking a drink of his beer. “You know how I feel about this, Brian.” he said.

“I know, I know, but you have to get back out there sometime. Just talk to her.” Zack sighed.

“Fine. I’ll talk to her, but that’s it. Don’t expect me to get in a relationship or even fuck her for that matter.”

Brian laughed. “She must have really done a number on you if you’re not willing to fuck her.” Brian knew how much Gena had meant to Zack, but he also knew that he wanted his friend to be happy. He heard Zack scoff on the line. “Okay, fine. Just talk to her. You never know what might come of it.”

“Nothing is going to come of it. I told you Brian, I’m done with women.” Zack shot. Brian sighed.

“Alright. You agreed to talk to her though.” He reminded him.

“I know, Brian.” he sighed. “I promise I’ll talk to her.” Zack sat his beer down on the counter, opening the fridge again, looking for something to eat.

“Okay, man. I’ll see you tomorrow night?” Zack nodded as if he could see him.

“I’ll be there.”

He hit the end button, before putting the phone back down onto the counter. He thought about that night in the bar with Brian and tried to remember what the girl looked like. Nothing came to mind. He would talk to her since he promised his friend that he would. He just knew that he wasn’t ready to move on yet. It would take a lifetime for someone else to convince him that they really loved him.

I loved this chapter so much! The ending was perfect! I can’t wait for more

This is so cute and light so far and I'm really enjoying it! I just went through a nasty breakup myself, so Zack saying that all he wanted to do was move on and pack up Gena's shit was super relatable! I'm looking forward to seeing how Zack warms up to Charlotte!
