Unconditionally

Zack was awakened by the doorbell ringing. He fluttered his eyes open looking at his watch, before checking his surroundings. He must have been too drunk to make it upstairs. He got up from the couch, making his way to the door, opening it. He squinted against the sunlight that was beaming into his eyes, focusing on the person that was standing there. The face was all to familiar and that of his lawyer, Jack. He knew he was supposed to go see him today about the divorce, but when Jack handed him the papers he had in his hand, Zack knew that Gena had already beaten him to it.

“I’m sorry, Zack.” Jack said as Zack took the papers from him, with a nod.

“It’s okay, man.” Zack mumbled. He didn’t think that it would hit him as hard as it was. Eleven years down the drain. Ended with the passing and signing of a few pieces of paper. “Can I go ahead and sign these and send them back with you?” Jack nodded.

“Zack, you don’t have to rush things. You can take time to think about it.” Zack shook his head.

“I’ve thought about it.” He lied. Zack hadn’t thought about anything. He had gone and gotten drunk the night before and just forgotten it all had happened. He had secretly hoped that she would change her mind and come back and be the same persistent bitch she always was, but the person at the door wasn’t her. She made her decision and it was only fair that he got to make one too.

Jack handed him a pen from his coat pocket, letting him sign the documents, before stuffing them back into the envelope and handing them back to him. “I have to say this is the fastest anyone has ever done that.” Jack stated as he took the papers into his hand. “I can hold them for a couple days until you decide for sure.”

“I am sure.” Zack stated, bluntly. “Why shouldn’t I be sure? I mean she’s already made it clear that she wants this and there’s nothing I can do about it now.” He shrugged, giving Jack a forced smile.

Jack nodded. “I understand.” he said, putting the pen back into this pocket. “You should go get yourself cleaned up a bit.” Even though Jack was Zack’s lawyer he was also his friend. He could tell that he had been wasted and disoriented. Zack nodded.

“I’ll do that, Jack.” he said with a smile. “Thanks for coming by.” Zack shut the door, turning back to the living room, looking around. He let his head drop, realizing that this was it. This was really happening and he needed to get rid of her as soon as possible.

He made his way upstairs to the bedroom they shared, gathering up her things from around the room. At this point he was disgusted with her and didn’t want to see anything that reminded him of her. He heard a car honking from outside and looked out the window to see who it was. Evidently, Brian had gotten the keys to his car the night before and asked Matt to help him bring it home. He rushed downstairs to meet them.

“Hey, man.” Brian said. “Brought your car home.” he said, jingling the keys in front of Zack as he approached getting a better look at him. “You look like hell.” he chuckled. Zack rubbed the back of his neck, taking the keys from Brian.

“Yeah, well, I got served with papers a little bit ago, so I haven’t really been able to clean up.” he admitted. “I’m packing up her things. I can’t look at it anymore.” Brian nodded.

“We’re here to help if you want.” he offered. “I don’t want to impose or anything. I know how hard this is for you.” Zack shook his head.

“It’s not as hard for me as most people think that it is. At this point I’m just angry.” Zack crossed his arms in front of him. “She has made it clear that this is what she wants and there’s no telling how long she’s wanted it.” He got quiet, then scoffs. “She’s probably with that other guy right now.” Zack clenched his jaw at the thought of her being with another man. Even though they were obviously getting a divorce and he was angry with her didn’t change the fact that he cared enough not to want to see her with someone else.

“To be honest, you’re probably right.” Brian agreed. “But we’re not going to think about that.” Zack nodded.

“I don’t want to think about that at all.” Zack admitted with a sigh.

“You guys wanna come in and have a beer and help me pack up some of this shit?” He said as he peeked back at Matt who was standing by his car on his phone. Brian nodded.

“Yeah, of course.” Brian agreed, turning back to Matt. “Come on fag, let’s help him.” he ordered toward Matt. Matt’s head shot up from his phone.

“Wait, what are we doing?” Matt asked confused. It was clear he was in his own little world over there on his phone. Brian laughed.

“I said you’re gay, and you would be willing to have a threesome with me and Zee.” Brian and Zack both laughed. Matt looked at them both with a strange look.

“You two are so full of fucking shit.” he said walking toward them. “Let’s go get this shit done.” He said. Brian turned to him.

“So you’re agreeing to this threesome?” he said with a grin, cutting his eyes at Zack. Matt hit him in the arm.
“No, you asshole.” he laughed a little. “We all know I’m not big enough to take care of your loose booty hole problems anyway.” Matt grinned.

“You would know about my asshole wouldn’t you, Matt?” he laughed. Matt shook his head.

“Get in the damn house, Haner.” Matt said, nudging him through the doorway.

Zack laughed at the conversation they had just had. They always seemed to know how to cheer him up, even if it was at someone else’s expense. They were his best friends and right now he needed that.
