Louisville Slugger

We were too dumb to run too dead to die

A sigh escapes my lips as I look at myself in the reflection. My black eye is slowly turning yellow and doesn’t need as heavy foundation as usual. My eyes are showing some kind of shimmer in them and I’m slowly starting to recognize myself in my own reflection. But still...something is missing.

I bite my lower lip as I begin messing with my long, purple hair. And that’s when it hit me. My hair needs to go. I need a complete change from how I look. If I change my look from the look he wanted me to have, I’ll be so much closer to removing Trey from my life. With a smile on my face, I rush out of the bathroom and head to the kitchen in search for a pair of scissors.

“What the fuck are you looking for?” Zacky ask as I open and shut drawer after drawer. “Are you okay Lex?”

“I need a pair of scissors.” I tell him, not stopping from my manic search. “Pointing me in the right direction would be so beneficial right now, Zee.”

“Why do you need scissors?” I can hear the cautious tone in his voice. This causes me to stop and look at my best friend. “Seriously why?”

“It’s nothing bad, I promise.” I assure. “Just tell me where they are so I can get them and do what I need to do. Trust me, this’ll be good for me.” He still gives me a side eye look for pulls open a drawer and craps a pair of scissors and hands them to me. I smile before taking them and placing a kiss on Zacky’s cheek as I skip out of the room and locking myself in the bathroom. It’s time to do some damage!

“What the hell, Alexandria!?” Zacky looks at me in shock when I walk into the living room. “Is that why you wanted the scissors?”

“In order for me to get my old self back, I need to remove the image he wanted me to have.” I explain my reasoning behind this. “Trey wanted me to have long hair, now it’s short. And as soon as I head to Sally’s I’m getting new hair color. I’m thinking a nice rose gold or something girly. He never wanted me to do pastels or anything like that.”

He smiles as he comes over and plays with my choppy ends. “Are you happy now?”

“I’m fucking ecstatic!” A huge smile appears on my lips. “I want to be a totally different person when I head back to Solana Beach Monday.” He frowns at the mention of me going back home. “Zee, I can’t hide out in Huntington Beach forever. I’m gonna have to go back home eventually. I have a bar to take care of and a home that I actually own up there.”

“I know but I don’t like that fact he can get to you.” The frown becomes more prominent. “He can seriously hurt you, Lex. I can’t lose you. You’re my best friend.”

“You won’t lose me, Zacky.” I smile as I wrap him in a big hug. “You’re stuck with me until the day you day. I’m not going anywhere any time soon.” He squeezes me once before pulling away, a fake smile on his lips. “You know, I know that’s fake right?”

“I still don’t like you out there all alone.” He states. “Can’t your sister or someone else take over the bar? You can sell your house and move back here. I can’t protect you when you’re out there.”

“If I run from Solana Beach that means Trey wins.” I sigh. “He has already put scars on my body, I can’t let him wreck any more parts of my life. I can’t let him win.”

“But he can kill you!” Zacky exclaims. “I can’t lose you because you’re stubborn and don’t want to run from a guy that has literally put you in the hospital.”

“You know his parents still live here right?” I hiss. “No matter where I go, he’ll always be there. I can run to the end of the world and he’ll fucking find me. That’s why I don’t want to run. Because even if I run back here, you can’t protect me forever. He’ll follow me and he’ll wait til you guys go on tour. He knows his way around.

“Then you’ll come with us!” He suggests. “Please Lexi, just please consider coming back home. If not for me, but for your parents. I don’t think they want to bury their daughter.”

A sigh escapes my lips as my fingers run through my newly short hair. “I’ll think about it. But I’m not making promises.”

He kisses my cheek and smiles. “That’s all I’m asking for you to do. Just think about it…”
