Desert Flower

A Proposal

Metal music blared from the bathroom where my beautiful girlfriend was showering. I peeked my head in and watched as she air-guitared while drying off. She was so beautiful. I was a lucky guy.

She had long, wavy blonde hair and light blue eyes. Her face was heart-shaped with a cute button nose and full, salmon-colored lips. Evangeline was short but had an incredible ass and just enough breast for my hands to be full. And then there were her legs: calves that could knock any man out.

“You’re staring,” she said. She had a towel wrapped around her body now.

“I can’t help it. You’re so damn gorgeous.” Leaning in, I kissed her lips. “I am one lucky guy.”

She smiled. “Well, thanks. But I have to get ready for work, Corpsman, and you staring is not helping me, especially considering I slept in late. Or napped as you called it.”

“Sorry, desert flower. What time will you be home today?”

She pulled out a hair dryer. “Around five. Why?” She pointed the dryer at me.

God, she was so damn hot. “I was thinking we could go out to dinner tonight. Thai food?”

“Hell yes!” She jumped up and down a little. She loved Thai food, but today was more than a date night. Tonight, I was going to propose to the love of my life.

“Awesome. Dress nicely?”

“Okay…” She gave me a funny look and then started to sing along to her metal music. Why she liked it was beyond me, but she sure looked cute jamming to it. Evangeline walked in the door at exactly five. She looked tired. Throwing her bag on the ground, she collapsed on the couch. Her shoes dangled off the arm, and she flailed them like a little kid.

“Everything okay?” I walked over to her and rubbed her back. “You seem a tad upset.”

“Do we have to go out tonight?” She rolled to her back and pouted at me. “Today sucked.”

Frowning, I pulled her shoes off. “If you really don’t want to, there’s no need. We just haven’t had a date night in a good bit. Maybe Thai food would cheer you up.”

She sat up and moved into my lap. “Does the date tonight mean that much to you?”

“Not if you don’t feel good.” I rubbed her back some more. “We can reschedule. I’ll just call to cancel the reservation.”

“No! Thai food, please.” She pouted again. I could never resist her pout.

“Okay. Will you still dress up for me?”

She stood and put her hands on her hips. “I only dress for me, hon.”

I laughed. “Sorry. Dress nicely for you?”

“Yes,” she said and kissed me. Then she skipped to our bedroom, and I couldn’t keep the smile off my face. I walked into our bedroom to change and heard more metal music playing.

Shaking my head, I knew it had to be a rough day if she was taking a second shower. I pulled clothes out of my closet and walked to the dresser for some cologne. As I walked past the bathroom door, I heard hiccupping.

Stopping, I pressed my ear to the door. Another hiccup came from behind the door, and I knew something was wrong. I pushed on the door, but it was locked.

“Evangeline?” No answer. “Desert flower, is something wrong?”

“No,” she said on a sob. “I’m… I’m okay.”

“No, you’re not. Let me in, please.”

“I’m fine, Matt.” The music stopped, and I could really hear her crying now.

“Darlin’, please!” I jiggled the door handle again. “Please.”

The door opened, and I went inside before it shut. My girl was laying on the bathroom floor in a fetal position, metal music starting to blare again. She was rocking gently and sobbing quietly.

“I’m not even gonna ask if you’re okay,” I said and pulled her onto my lap. “We’re not doing date night. We’ll stay in and watch Will Ferrell movies, okay. There’s no date more important than making sure you’re feeling like yourself.”

“But… but it’s important to you. It obviously is. Are you getting deployed again?”

I stared down at my girl. She’d only been with me through one deployment, and it had been a short one. Though tours were getting further apart, I hadn’t been on one for a while. “No, desert flower. I don’t have a deployment for another few months. Is that why you’re crying?”

She curled further into a ball. “You’re just really pushing this date tonight. I guess I just assumed that it meant something bad was going to happen. We can still go get Thai.”

I sighed. “It’s not happening tonight. How about I order in some Thai food and then we can watch movies. Date night tomorrow?”

“Are you sure?” She finally looked up at me. Her baby blues were a stormy grey.

“Yes, desert flower,” I said and wrapped a towel around her, lifting her into my arms.

We walked like this into the bedroom, and I set her on the bed. I was having trouble believing her tears were just about her thinking I was going on tour, but she’d tell me when she was ready.

Putting away my clothes, I pulled pajamas out for Evangeline and helped her dress. Then I put on my own pajamas and called to cancel the reservations and let my friends know the plan was pushed until tomorrow. When all was said and done, my girl was still in a fetal position on the bed.

“What do you want from the Thai place?”

She turned to face me. “Mild phud Thai, please.”

Her eyes were red and puffy. It was clear to me she had been crying harder while I was making my calls.

“Yeah, of course. What movie?”

“Can we watch Batman vs. Superman?”

I smiled at her. “You know, you watch that movie so much, I’m beginning to think you have a thing for Henry Cavill.”

She chuckled. “I do. He and Chris Evans are just so attractive, but neither one of them are
you.”

I really smiled then and made the call for our orders and popped the DVD into the player.

Getting on the bed, I pulled my girl close to me and sat back to watch a fairly decent film.

“Matt?” Evangeline’s voice woke me. “Are you awake?”

I had her huddled close to my body, my legs wrapped around hers. “Yeah. What’s going on?”

“Today was a bad day. When I got to work, I completely forgot about date night. We were swamped with edits and assignments. One of our top reporters had been sharing stories with another magazine, which never happens outside of a movie, and one of our better photojournalists quit out of frustration. Following those two revelations, six other people left and that left us understaffed.

“So, the remaining employees got all the work load, and I was given the worst assignment of the day. Three little kids were hit by a truck today, and I had to take the pictures for the newspaper who called our magazine for help because they’re also understaffed. Plus, I still had all my magazine assignments to do and those haven’t been a walk in the park. Editing was hell and my editor pushed up the date for my next book.

“But the worst part of it all is that my boss said he has to lay off people even with all those who quit. I got laid off, Matt. And I received a bullshit severance package. He didn’t even give me a valid reason! After all the work I put into that place, he fired me!” She rolled onto my chest.

“I wish I had words to give you. I can’t make it better, but I’m here for you and with your resume, you’ll get a job before you can blink. Evangeline, you’re special. Loads of people will want you.”

I slid off the bed and reached into one of my dresser drawers and pulled out a black ring box. I wanted to wait to make this day special, but I was so in love with this woman, and she needed something to go right today.

“I know, Matt. It still sucks. I’ve never been laid off before or even fired. This is a first for me.” She was on her back now, staring at the ceiling. “I loved that magazine. It truly understands sports, and it was based in Texas. Maybe I can find a cowboy specific one. I know you don’t rodeo anymore, but you could be my model.”

I gently smiled at her. “Only if I get to take pictures of you.” I climbed back into bed with her. “You’re too beautiful to be behind the camera all the time.”

She faced me, her cheeks red with color. “Thank you. You’re too good to me, Matt.”

“I…” She left me at a loss for words. “Evie, you know why I wanted to go out tonight? It wasn’t just a date night. You’re sort of right, it was different than our regular nights out. I’ve been meaning to do this for a bit.”

I slid off the bed again, and my girl covered her mouth as soon as I got down on one knee. “My beautiful Evangeline, you have made the last two years wonderful. Will you marry me, desert flower?”

She nodded but kept her hands on her mouth.

“I’ll need your hand.”

Laughing, she gave it to me, and I slipped the ring on. We kissed and hopped back into bed. This beautiful woman was mine.
