The Wild Ride

Five

In the early morning hours of July fourth, Peyton and her friends were scattered throughout the waiting area of the maternity ward in the hospital. Val’s water had broken the night before, and they had been waiting since. “I can’t wait to meet him!” Michelle said excitedly. “Me either! I wonder who he’s going to look like.” Lacey said from her spot beside Johnny, who had his head leaned back against the wall and was snoring. “Probably Matt.” Peyton said with a chuckle. The group sat and talked for a while longer until the double doors opened and Matt appeared on the other side with a huge smile on his face, “He’s here! Eight pounds, four ounces. He’s absolutely perfect.” He gushed, “She wants you guys to come on back so we can get some rest after you fucks leave.” Michelle rushed at him, squealing and squeezing him tightly. “I’m so happy for you guys!” She exclaimed, while Peyton was discreetly wiping tears from her eyes. “Really, Pey?” Johnny teased, throwing an arm over her shoulder. “Shut up, dick. My best friend just became a mama.” She chuckled. “Johnny leave her alone, you know she gets emotional.” Lacey joked, linking her arm with the brunette’s. “Come on Pey, let’s go meet River.” As the group of women were walking toward Val’s hospital room, Zack and Brian were walking beside Matt. “Welcome to the club, daddy Shadows.” The green eyed man joked, slapping his friend on the back. “It’s pretty damn amazing isn’t it?” Matt nodded, “It is. This is probably the best day of my life. From this day forward, my entire life will be different.” “It will be, but in a good way. That little boy will be the best damn thing that has ever happened to you, just like his mom. Trust me.” Zack said with a smile. Once they made it to the room, the guys couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight before them: Peyton was sitting at the foot of Val’s bed, holding one of her hands and talking to her while Michelle was holding the baby and Lacey was looking over her shoulder, cooing to the baby. When it was Peyton’s turn to hold the baby, she was beaming. “Hey little buddy, I’m your aunt Peyton. Your cousin Lincoln can’t wait to meet you! Uncle Zack and I are going to teach you everything you need to know in life.” “Oh great.” Matt groaned as he sank into a chair. “It’s better than Johnny being your kid’s best friend, just ask Peyton.” Brian joked. “I swear that’s why he gets himself into so much shit. He just can’t help it, we named him after Johnny. It’s not his fault.” Zack said with a laugh. “You guys are fucking assholes. I don’t do anything wrong when I’m with Linc.” The bassist defended. “Except you let him drink beer and play in baby powders and put his toys in the toilet.” Peyton stated. “The baby powder wasn’t my fault! Zack was there too!” Johnny argued while the rest of the group laughed. “See what I mean?” Brian asked Matt, who nodded with a laugh.

After everyone had their turn holding the baby, they decided to go to their respective homes and take a nap before meeting at the carnival and fireworks later on that day. Peyton had called her parents to let them know she and Zack were on their way to get their son, but Becky wasn’t having it. “Go home, take a shower and a nap, then Dan and I will bring him over. I’m sure you two didn’t sleep all night.” “But mom-“ Peyton started, but was quickly cut off by her mother. “I mean it, Peyton Elizabeth. Lincoln is fine. He’s taking his nap, then I’ll feed him lunch and we will meet you guys at your house before the carnival.” “Okay mom. I’ll see you later.” Peyton sighed before disconnecting with her mother. “Looks like mom and dad are keeping the monster until it’s time to go to the carnival so we can get some rest.” She explained to her husband, who looked like he was going to fall asleep driving. “Good because I’m fucking exhausted.” He sighed. Once they made it home, Zack followed Peyton upstairs and into their bedroom, where they both stripped out of their clothes and went straight to sleep, and stayed there for a few hours.

When they finally made it to the carnival with Lincoln, it wasn’t hard to find their group at all. Johnny’s mohawk was sky high, and he had put red gel on the tips of it. “You really did that?” Zack asked him with a laugh. “Hey man. America.” Johnny said, raising his beer. Zack and Peyton had decided to let their son walk or sit on someone’s shoulders, since there would be plenty of people willing to carry him around, and the first person he wanted was Johnny. “Jahnee! Hold you!” The little boy shouted, patting the bassist on the leg. “Oh shit! What up little man? I didn’t even see you down there!” Johnny said, picking Linc up and pulling him close for a hug. “I missed you buddy, were you good for your grandparents?” Lincoln nodded absentmindedly while looking at all the activities at the carnival. “What do you want to do first? The merry go round? Bumper cars? This weird ass little duck in the water game?” Lincoln was about to acknowledge him when he spotted Brian and Michelle walking toward them. “Bian! Chell!” He shouted, wiggling out of Johnny’s arms. Once the man sat him on the ground, he took off in a run. “Biiiiiiian!” Lincoln squealed excitedly. “Linc Monster! Hey buddy!” The guitarist said, lifting the boy into his arms and tossing him in the air. “I missed you dude! You ready to play?” “Yeah!” Linc exclaimed, leaning over slightly to give Michelle the kiss she was asking for. “Hey my handsome boy.” She said with a smile. “Bi! Go play!” Lincoln said, pointing to the little pool full of ducks. “Okay, weird ass little duck in the water game it is.” Johnny chuckled. Zack had bought a ton of tickets for himself and for Lincoln, knowing his son would want to try every game he found. Lincoln was having a blast, splashing in the water and trying to grab the little ducks that went around the small pool in circles. When he finally grabbed one, he cheered loudly. “I did it!” He shouted, showing his mother. “Good job baby! Which prize do you want?” She asked him, knowing exactly what he was going to pick. The toddler looked at the group of prizes around the tent and immediately went to the inflatable hammer and grabbed one. “Can I have it?” He asked his father. “Of course buddy. You can beat uncle Johnny with it!” Zack chuckled. “Thanks a lot, dick.” The bassist grumbled while everyone else laughed.

Lincoln played a few more games, including one where he had to throw a baseball at a target, and he was surprisingly good at it. "He's gonna be a baseball player, just like his dad." Zack beamed. Before long Peyton’s arms were full of his prizes, and the little boy was beaming. “Hey buddy, how about we stop for a bit and grab some food, you want a corn dog?” Zack asked, squatting down to look his son in the eyes. “YES!” He cheered loudly. “Daddy, I hold you please.” He said sweetly, his arms reaching toward his father. “Come on buddy. Want to ride on my shoulders?” Zack asked, pulling him into his arms. “Oh yes!” Linc said excitedly. Zack hoisted the toddler up on his shoulders and took off running toward the food section of the carnival, the child laughing the entire way.
After everyone had eaten, they rode a few rides. Linc couldn’t ride many, but his mother made sure he rode all of the kiddie rides, with her sitting right beside him. “Pey it’s a little sad that you can fit on most of those rides.” Brian chuckled. “Whatever. I get to ride with my kid, and he loves it.” She chuckled as she was watching her son and husband ride a go-kart around a small track. “Thanks for coming out with us today. I’m sure the last thing you wanted to do today was hang out with a toddler.” She said, looking over at her pseudo-brother and sister in law. “Peyton, there’s nowhere else we’d rather be than with you guys and Linc. Except maybe a pool because it’s fucking hot.” Michelle said with a chuckle while Brian rolled his eyes playfully. “We can go stick you in the dunking booth if you’re that hot Mich. Or the river is just right over there, I could throw you in if you want.” He joked as his wife swatted his arm. While they were talking, Zack and Lincoln were exiting the go-kart track and Linc took off in a full sprint toward Brian. “Bian! Bian! I drive!” He shouted before running into someone’s leg. Peyton rushed over to her son, making sure he was okay and stood up to apologize to the person. “Hey sweetie! Are you okay? I didn’t see you.” Gena gushed, bending down to grab the little boy’s shoulders before Peyton pulled him closer to her. “He’s fine, Gena.” She said sternly. “Sorry he ran into you.” “Oh it’s okay, it was an accident. He looks just like Zack though! He is so adorable.” Gena commented. Peyton smiled tightly and nodded, “He does. He’s just like Zack. Anyway, see you later.” With that, she grabbed her son’s hand and led him toward his father and godfather. “I’m proud of you, P. You didn’t even hit her.” Brian chuckled. “Yeah, I was almost positive you were going to hit her and then we would have had to hide you from the cops.” Johnny added while Peyton gave them the evil eye. “Let’s go find a spot to sit for fireworks.” She grumbled before leading the group toward the field. “Way to go, idiots.” Lacey said before she and Michelle caught up to their friend to cheer her up.

Once they had their spot picked out, Brian and Johnny ran back to their cars to grab blankets for everyone to sit on, and the girls and Zack were entertaining Lincoln. Lacey and Peyton were making up a goofy song, and Michelle and Linc were dancing around the field to it. Zack was standing there keeping an eye out for the rest of the guys, and probably Gena. Peyton left her friends playing with their nephew and stood by her husband. “What’s got you so quiet?” She asked, wrapping an arm around his waist. “I’m just keeping an eye out. Don’t need any crazy bitches trying to kidnap my son.” He commented, looking down at his wife. “I’m proud of the way you handled that earlier. I know you wanted to hit her for trying to touch Linc.” Peyton shrugged and looked over at their son, “I’m not going to let Gena ruin our good day. It isn’t fair to Lincoln or to you.” Zack laid his arm across her shoulders and kissed the side of her head. “I love you, kid. You know that?” Peyton nodded. “I know. I love you too, Zee.” “Beer’s here!” Johnny shouted as he and Brian were walking toward them, arms full of blankets and each man carrying a side of the cooler. Peyton rolled her eyes and went to grab a blanket from the two men, “Did someone remember juice for their nephew? You guys were reminded to grab it on your beer run this morning.” Brian and Johnny looked at one another before looking back at Peyton. “Well, you see…” the guitarist trailed off before Michelle laughed loudly. “Thank goodness for Aunty Chell, because Bri forgot your juice little man!”

A little while later, the girls decided to make a quick bathroom trip before the fireworks started. Peyton had just walked over to the sink to wash her hands when Gena walked in. She sighed heavily when the blonde started talking to her, “So, your son is just like Zack? Has he gotten started on guitar yet?” Peyton rinsed her hands and dried them with a paper towel before she said anything to Gena. Michelle and Lacey were standing by the door, watching the exchange. “Gena, I’m not going to do this.” The brunette sighed, throwing her paper towel away and crossing her arms over her chest. “Do what? I just asked a question.” Gena stated. “I’m not going to tell you about my son so you can obsess over him just like you do my husband. You’re getting married in a few months, maybe you should obsess over your fiancée and future children.” “Oh please. You act like I’m some kind of crazy person. I’m just trying to start a conversation with you.” The blonde said with an eye roll. “Trust me when I say if I wanted Zack, he would be mine. That little boy too. It wouldn’t be too hard to take either one of them from you and watch as your entire world crumbled around you.” Before anyone else could react, Peyton had Gena shoved against the wall with her hand around her throat. “Peyton!” Michelle gasped. “I’m going to tell you one last time, Gena. Stay the FUCK away from my family, or I’ll fucking kill you. Do you fucking understand that?” She growled while Gena nodded. Peyton released the slightly taller girl and walked out of the bathroom without another word. “Gena, you really need to leave them alone. I’d hate for something bad to happen to you because you don’t listen.” Lacey warned before she and Michelle left the bathroom to catch up to Peyton, who had spotted Gena’s fiancée. “Hey, are you Andy?” She asked the man, who only nodded. “Hey, I’m Peyton. Gena tried to kill me once, I suggest you run far far away.” The brunette said before walking off toward her family. “Holy shit Pey you are vicious today!” Michelle laughed. “Just don’t say anything to the guys right now, okay? I’ll talk to Zack when we get home.” Peyton sighed, “Let’s just enjoy the rest of the evening.” The two women nodded and their conversation switched to something more joyful, and by the time they reached their men they were laughing. Peyton grabbed a beer from the cooler before sitting down beside her husband. “There you are. I thought you left me.” He joked, kissing her cheek. “Babe, I’ll never leave you.” She said sincerely before placing a kiss on his lips.

The firework show started right as the sun left the horizon. Johnny had bought Lincoln a glow stick necklace, and he was currently sitting atop his father’s shoulders, squealing in delight with the necklace on top of his head. Occasionally one would boom loudly and he would jump before covering his ears, but all in all he thoroughly enjoyed the fireworks show. Once it was over, the group headed to their cars. Peyton was carrying Lincoln tightly in her arms, and the little boy was asleep before he was ever buckled into his seat. Once they had said their goodbyes and made it home, Zack and Peyton put Lincoln in his bed before going out to the patio for one more beer before bed. “So, I saw Gena again.” She began, playing with the label on her bottle. Zack cleared his throat and looked at his wife carefully, “What happened?” When she didn’t say anything right away, he asked again. “Babe, what happened?” “I threatened her.” She said quietly. Zack sighed heavily before opening his mouth to say something, only to be stopped by his wife. “Zee. Before you say anything. She provoked me. I was holding it in, and I exploded. She will not touch my family, or threaten to do so.” Zack nodded. “I get it. You went into mama bear mode. It’s kind of hot, actually. Just don’t do anything stupid, Pey. Okay?” “You mean like shove her against the wall with my hand around her throat?” She asked, looking at him through her lashes. Zack groaned and laid his head against the top of the chair before looking at her with a smirk. “Come here.” He chuckled, holding his hand out to her and pulling her into his lap. “I love you, Peyton. And I love that you’re so protective. I’m not going to be pissed at you for protecting our son. You are the greatest wife and mother. Just like I knew you would be.” Peyton’s entire body relaxed in relief as she leaned against her husband. “I can’t let her get to you two. If something happened to either of you I couldn’t live.” “Hey, I’m not going anywhere and Linc definitely isn’t. We need you.” He said before kissing her passionately. “Now, about that new baby….” He trailed off, making her giggle before picking her up and carrying her upstairs to create some fireworks of their own.

@overneaththepathofmisery
She has been a smoker for years, but she is determined to beat it. I however, am struggling. I’m on the fence about adding it into one of my stories, writing is how I kind of deal with the shit in my life. I’m just kind of holding it all in at the moment.
