Take a Look At Yourself

Unbound

The football field looked weirdly comforting after the weekend I had had. The Harrisons never really got along to begin with, but it felt like I was being attacked. I loved what my family had done for me, but I hated how they treated me. Just because I had tattoos and a propensity for bucking the family morals didn't mean I was some sort of schmuck.

"Harrison, you okay?" the cute dimpled wide receiver sat down next to me. "You look out of it."

I forced a smile, trying not to be wooed by the dimples. "Just had an interesting Thanksgiving. What are you doing here?"

"I came to breathe in the air. We're nearing the end of the season which means I have to focus back on school." Matt grinned at me. "You know the football boys, we hate to do anything school related. Sorry your Thanksgiving was weird. Mine was too. You wanna talk about it?"

Picking at some grass, I contemplated his offer. Matt seemed like a good guy, but he had seen me at my weakest. He had seen me crying on the couch, curled up into a ball. Did he really need to know more about me?

"Yeah, but you tell me about yours first." I nudged his shoulder. "Mine is... just too weird for words."

Matt laughed. "Well, my sister is dating the ultimate version of a football head. His name is even Chad! Like he looks exactly how you would expect the football player type to look. It was like staring at a Tom Brady.

"Anyway, he and his family came to my house for Thanksgiving. He plays ball at UCLA and his parents were in town for a game. Apparently, they know about you... and let's just say they didn't approve. I may or may not have jumped to your defense."

I stared at Matt with an eyebrow cocked. He defended me? The man barely knew me outside of practice, but he had jumped to my defense. "Who was at your house that would possibly know me?"

"Some fancy pants lawyer from Dallas. His name is Damian Taylor."

My heart leaped up into my throat. Damian Taylor was the quintessential Dallas lawyer. He wore the three-piece suit and the Lucchese cowboy boots. He even slicked his hair back, and he was my father's best friend and partner. Damian was another abuser in my life. The man was even more fearsome than my father.

"What... why was he at your house?"

"His son is dating my sister." Matt forced a smile on his face. "I don't like him, can't explain why."

I shook my head. "He's partners with my dad. That's so weird."

Matt nodded and rubbed a hand over his face. "What about your Thanksgiving?" He stretched out his legs. I took a second to look at them. They were so long, and I had a really good feeling that he had a great ass tucked underneath them.

"It was awful, Matt. Honestly, I came to the field to forget all about it." I turned to him and smiled. "Sorry, I... just don't want anyone to know about it."

"I figured as much. You wanna go grab a beer and some fries?"

"That sounds amazing, Matt."

Four shots of Patron later, I was basically hanging off Matt. The man was a wall of muscle. His arms could wrap around me like four times over. And I was right about his ass! It was like a delightful little apple.

"I think we need to get you home, Carmen." Matt reached an arm around my waist to steady me. "You take tequila better than I do."

I laughed, feeling the nice feeling of alcohol wash over me. "No, Matty, I don't want to go home. If I go home, I'll think about my Thanksgiving. I don't want to think about that." I sounded like a petulant child.

Matt flashed those dimples at me and nodded. "Fine, but you've gotta drink some water now. No more tequila."

"Tequila!" I rubbed my stomach and smiled. I loved tequila.

Matt grabbed me by the arm and led me to the bar. Carefully, he kept one arm wrapped around me as he motioned at the bar tender. I wasn't sure what they were talking about, but a clear liquid appeared in my hand. Bless you, tequila!

My head pounded as I woke up to an arm wrapped around my waist. Oh fuck! The last thing I remembered was the fifth tequila shot I had taken. What had happened since then? Did Matt leave me at the bar?

Turning over, I saw it was Matt that was holding onto me. We were lying on a couch, smushed together. And I had never been more comfortable. Normally, I was really afraid to be around men. They always reminded me of my father or Damian, but Matt made me feel safe for some reason. I wasn't going to let that feeling go, so I snuggled into his chest. I had to cling to my last few moments before my brain took over.
