A Shot In The Dark
“Val, I don’t know if I can do this,” I said as I walked out of my bathroom, wrapped in an oversized bath towel.
My best friend and roommate, Val, sat at my desk looking at me with a warm smile and a mischievous look in her eye, “Doll you’re gonna knock him dead in that towel.”
I gasped pretending to be offended and threw the closest thing I could reach (my teddy bear) at her. “I’m not that trashy.”
Val laughed and stood up then moved to my closet, “Hmm what shall we dress you up in?”
I shrugged, “I don’t know, I’ve never met this guy.”
Val smiled, pulling out a purple cocktail dress, “Trust me, you’ll love this guy.”
I groaned, “I’ve never been on a blind date, so I’m really trusting you, girl.”
“Wear this dress and these heels,” she held up my 4-inch strappy black stilettos. “You will knock him dead.”
I blushed and smiled, “Alright, will you do my hair and make-up?”
“of course, Doll,” she grinned. “But hurry, we gotta meet them in an hour.”
Since I’m getting dressed, maybe it’s a good time to explain what you walked in on. My name is Shiloh Marie Lovoto, and as you may have gathered, my best friend Valary is making me go on a blind date. The guy was her boyfriend, Matt’s, friend and band mate, but I wasn’t allowed to know his name. I supposed she was wanting to prevent me from googling him. I pulled on my stilettos and immediately hoped that these were tall enough as I only stand at 5’4” barefoot.
As I emerged from the bathroom, Val stood and approached me, “Girl you look amazing in that outfit!”
I blushed at the compliment and smiled, “Will these heels give me enough height?” If he was as tall as Matt, they most certainly weren’t even close to giving me enough height.
“They’ll give you the perfect amount,” she smiled and led me to the desk chair. “What do you think of my dress?”
She twirled in her flowy navy-blue halter dress, “Babe, Matt is gonna feel like a million bucks with you on his arm.”
Thirty minutes later we stood at the plaza restaurant in the Hyatt hotel. Val and I linked arms as we walked across the room, following the hostess. As soon as Val saw Matt she unlinked our arms and went to him.
Matt met her with a chaste kiss, “Baby, you look amazing.”
“Thank you handsome,” she smiled and kissed him again.
“I thought you were bringing Shi…” Matt said confused.
“Ahem,” I cleared my throat playfully.
“Holy shit, I hardly recognized you,” Matt blushed.
“Where is he?” Val asked as we laughed at him.
“Babe, chill, he’s at the bar grabbing us all drinks,” Matt pulled out Val’s chair, then my chair trying to gain brownie points.
“He knows what I drink?” I teased Matt.
“Val may have reminded me,” Matt showed his dimples trying to play off innocence.
Val giggled, “Shi, leave Mattie alone.” I couldn’t help but join in the giggle party as a handsome young man approached.
He stood at around 5’8” with beautiful blue-green eyes and dark brown/black hair, carrying two beers and two cocktails. When our eyes met, he sort of stumbled, accidentally spilling one of the beers.
Matt immediately jumped up, his crotch soaked, “Fuck, Zacky!”
I broke into a fit of giggles along with Val, “Matt I thought you were with Val, yelling someone else’s name like that may give others the wrong idea.”
That’s when the handsome stranger started laughing even though his cheeks were red from humiliation, “She kinda got you there Shads.”
“Ugh,” Matt rolled his eyes, his dimpled peeking out as he finally lightened up, “At least grab me another drink, Dick.”
“Oh Matt, stop,” Val chastised him. “You still have ¾ of a glass.” She then looked at their friend, “Zacky Baker, meet Shiloh Lovoto.”
I stood and stuck out my hand, leaning slightly over the table, “Nice to meet you.”
“Pleasure is all mine,” he kissed my hand and smiled before we took our seats.
After dinner, Matt and Val decided to head back to Matt’s house, leaving me with Zacky. “So, did you grow up around here?”
I smiled thoughtfully as we walked to the edge of the pier. The sun was setting over the water, causing a beautiful lighting over the rolling waves. “No,” I brushed my hair out of my face. “I’m actually from the Midwest. I grew up in Kansas.”
He looked a little surprised as we looked out over the water, “You are a long way from home then.”
I nodded, “My mom died when I was 18, I moved out here right after I graduated. Val was one of the first people I ever met. Well…” I thought for a second. “Her and Michelle.”
Zacky nodded as his hand grazed mine, “where’s your dad?”
I shrugged trying to figure out if he had meant to brush my hand. “He walked out on my mom and I when I was a kid.”
“I’m sorry,” Zacky said softly.
“For what?” I asked looking up into his eyes.
“That you’re alone,” he brushed my hair out of my face, his eyes meeting mine, then lowering to my lips.
“I’m a long way from being alone,” I whispered as we both leaned in. His mouth capturing mine as the sun disappeared over the horizon.
Sorry for the confusion guys. My other account wouldn't let me log in for whatever reason. >.<
