Times Like These

When we pulled up at the venue, there were cars everywhere. “Holy shit how many people are going to be at this party?” Matt asked, looking out the window. “We have a really big family.” Dani laughed, pulling into a parking spot. I sent a quick text to our aunt, letting her know we were here, and she told us to hide out in the kitchen. “Okay. We have to find the kitchen and somehow not be spotted by everyone else.” I told my sister, who looked just as confused as I did. “How the fuck do we even do that?” Brian asked, looking around for a different door. Just then, a woman in a white button down shirt came up to us, “Nichole and Danielle?” She asked. I nodded and she replied, “Come with me, I’ll keep you hidden until it’s time for you guys.” I smiled in thanks and we followed her around the back of the building and into a small door that led us right to the kitchen. “If you stay right here you’ll be able to hear your aunt call for you. I’m assuming you have a special code word?” “Something like that.” Dani told her. “Thank you!” “No problem, I’m happy to help. Enjoy the party.” She smiled and got back to work.

Soon the dj cut the music and we heard our aunt’s voice, “Okay, so the twins planned this whole party for their mom with my help. They wanted me to give her a special gift, so could someone bring it out here please?” That was our cue. I took a deep breath and grabbed my sister’s hand and we walked through the door. Once we walked into the lights, the entire room went crazy with cheers. Our mom leapt out of her chair and ran over to us, tears streaming down her face. “Oh my girls!” She shouted, pulling us into her arms. “Happy birthday Mama!” I said with a laugh, squeezing her tight. “Oh and you brought the boys! Hi guys!” She said, leaving us to hug our boyfriends. “Hey Jan, happy birthday!” Matt chuckled. Once mom released the boys she pulled us back into her arms. “I just can’t believe you two are here. How did you pull all of this off?” “Ang helped us a lot.” Dani said with a shrug. “I can’t believe you went through all this trouble for me.” Mom said, still crying. “Mom. You deserve it and so much more. We love you!” I said, pulling her into a hug. “Oh Mama, we have one more gift for you.” Dani said, walking over to talk to the dj. “Nichole I swear to you if your brother pops out of hiding I might have a heart attack.” She told me, making me laugh. “Sorry Mama, we couldn’t get him home, but we got the next best thing.” I said, pointing to the screen that had Mark’s face on it. Mom gasped in surprise and held her hands to her face. I grabbed one of her hands and held it, and Brian cane up and wrapped his arm around my shoulders, pulling me close to him and kissing my head. “Hey Mama!” Mark said on the video, “I’m sorry I couldn’t make it to your party tonight, but I know you’re going to have fun. I miss you so much and I can’t wait to see you. Nikki, Dani, you two behave, and don’t drink too much, especially you Nick!” He chuckled to himself, which made me. “I love you guys, Happy birthday mom!” He said and ended the video. I wiped tears I didn’t even realize were falling out of my eyes and leaned close to my mom. “Is this the best birthday ever or what?” She laughed and nodded. “It is baby. Thank you so much.”

For the next few hours, we ate some food and walked around, mingling with family and friends and introducing the boys to everyone. Once our grandparents left, us cousins broke out the alcohol. Our best friend Evona was there as well. She was like our triplet, she was a smart ass just like Dani, and she definitely knew how to have a good time. Soon we were all pretty tipsy, singing and dancing along to our favorite songs when our cousin, Clark, tried to talk Dani and I into singing. “Come on girls, sing just one song! It’s your mom’s birthday!” He pleaded. Soon everyone else was saying it too. I looked over at Brian for help to get out of it, but he simply shrugged and said “I’d like to see it myself honestly.” I rolled my eyes and looked over at Dani, who started walking toward the dj. I huffed and followed her, walking super slow. “Nick, get your ass up here. If I’m doing it then so are you.” I grabbed the mic out of her hand and asked her what we were singing. When she whispered it in my ear I laughed. “This one’s for you mom!” Dani shouted into the mic before the music started.

Prince. They were singing a fucking Prince song for their mom, and she absolutely loved it. Nick and Dani’s mom was one of the sweetest women I had ever met. She’s an older version of her daughters, with shorter hair and green eyes. She has their same smile and laugh. Matt and I watched our girlfriends on the small stage, singing and dancing around like they didn’t have a care in the world with huge smiles on their faces. “Dude. I think I’m in love.” Matt said. I looked over at my hazel-eyed friend with raised eyebrows, “I told Nick the other night, but I don’t think she heard me. Or if she did then she didn’t say anything.” Matt laughed and slapped me on the back. “Don’t be a pussy Gates. Tell her when she’s not half asleep.” “Have you even told Dani you loved her yet?” I challenged, watching his grin fade. He shook his head, “No. I haven’t. I didn’t want to freak her out.” “Matt. I’ve seen the way she looks at you, I really don’t think you’d freak her out. Go for it man.” Matt nodded and soon the girls had finished their song, and I cheered dramatically for them. Nikki laughed and rolled her eyes as she stepped off the stage, and I pulled her in for a kiss. “That might have been the sexiest version of ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ I have ever heard.” I whispered into her ear. She smiled and raised her eyebrows. “Really? You’re turned on by a Prince song?” “No, just by the beautiful girl singing it.” I grinned down at her, making her laugh. Soon we all sang happy birthday to their mom, and one by one people started leaving. We drank a little bit more before heading to our hotel, with promises to Jan that we would check out first thing in the morning and spend the remainder of the week at her house. Once Nikki and I got back to our room, my mouth was on hers and my hand was unzipping the back of her dress and she unbuttoned my shirt. “Someone is eager tonight.” She giggled as I pulled the dress down. “Are you kidding me? I’ve been wanting to get you out of that damn thing all night.” I said stepping out of my pants and boxers. I climbed on top of her and my mouth found hers, and we spent the rest of our night doing all the things we had thought about doing to each other since the plane landed.
