Chapter sixteen

A few days later, we were all packed and boarding the plane to Atlanta. From there, we would drive to our tiny hometown of Cartersville, which was about an hour drive. We decided to check into a hotel for the day so we could get ready for the party, just so we didn’t ruin the surprise. I looked at Dani with a huge smile on my face, “Dude I am so excited. Mom is going to be thrilled.” “I know. I can’t believe we were able to get in touch with Mark so he could record a video for her. She’s going to cry.” My sister chuckled. The day after Dani told me we were going home, we were able to get in touch with our brother in Afghanistan to see if he could at least call her once we got to the party. He decided to record a video, just in case he got called out on a mission, and emailed it to Dani so we could play it for her. We had coordinated with our aunt and a party planner to make her 50th birthday her best birthday yet. We had reserved a ballroom and there was going to be lots of black and glittery gold accents with roses and lilies and a DJ and a beautiful cake. We were going to go to the venue as soon as we landed to approve of the decor, then go get ready. The party started at 5, and we were supposed to be there at 6 for the big surprise. I looked over at Brian, who had his head leaned back against the seat with his eyes closed. “You tired babe?” He opened his eyes and smiled down at me, “Well, I couldn’t get my girlfriend to go to bed last night. She just wouldn’t stop talking.” I laughed loudly and swatted his chest. “I wasn’t talking.” “Well, you were at first. But then I shut you up.” He joked, wiggling his eyebrows. I laughed and rolled my eyes. “I just can’t wait to see my family. I didn’t realize how much I missed them until I found out I was coming home.” “I know baby, we’ll be here for about a week so you’ve got plenty of time to see everyone.” He kissed the side of my head and leaned his head back, “Just relax, we’ll be there before you know it.”

A few hours later, we were preparing to land in Atlanta and Dani and I were practically bouncing in our seats. “I have a feeling these two are going to show their true colors this week.” Matt chuckled, looking over at Brian who nodded. “Yeah. I think you’re right buddy.” We got off the plane and grabbed our luggage before heading over to rent a car for the week. Dani and I decided to get two cars, just in case we wanted to go to two different places. Once the clerk gave us our keys, I looked up at Brian excitedly, “I’ll drive, since I know where I’m going.” He shrugged and handed over the keys, grabbing my suitcase out of my hand, “Let’s get out of here before someone recognizes me.” I laughed loudly as we walked out to the vehicles. “I’ll follow you, Nick.” Matt told me, getting into the drivers seat of the car they rented. I smiled and nodded before getting into my own vehicle and starting it up. “I hate rental cars.” I grumbled, “Luckily I have my aux cord so we can listen to the good music.” Brian laughed and grabbed the cord out of my purse before plugging it into the radio. I turned on Pandora and we drove out of the airport parking deck, Van Halen flowing through the speakers.

After about a 45 minute drive, we were at the venue. Brian got out of the car, shaking his head. “Dani, you didn’t warn me about your sister’s love for rap while she drives in traffic. “Oh shit.” My sister laughed, “She didn’t.” “She did.” I said with a grin, “She broke out her favorite T.I. songs and rapped every single line.” “My girl!” Dani chuckled, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. “You make me proud.” We walked into the venue together, the guys following behind us laughing. Once we walked into the ballroom we were taken aback a little. The tables were covered with black table cloths and had sparkly gold table runners and vases of white hydrangeas sat in the middle of them. There were dozens of black and gold balloons everywhere, along with bunting and gold balloons in the shape of a 5 and 0. “This is perfect!” I said excitedly. Dani nodded her head in agreement. “She’s going to love this.” “Wow, you girls planned all of this from a California? I’m impressed.” Matt chuckled. “Yeah. Good job guys. This is awesome.” Brian said, wrapping an arm around my waist. “I’m sure your mom is going to love it.” We walked around the ballroom a little, making a few adjustments before deciding it looked amazing and headed to the hotel to get ready.

Brian sat on the bed watching tv while I got ready. “Are you going to let me see your dress?” He asked while I was curling my hair. “Sure, right before we walk out the door. I know how you are.” I joked, poking my head out the bathroom door. “What is that supposed to mean?” He asked, faking offense. “Do you remember the last time I wore a dress to a party? We were thirty minutes late and I had to redo my hair.” “Well. I couldn’t help it. That dress looked amazing on you. It looked amazing coming off too.” He shrugged, unashamed. “Yeah. That’s why you can’t see it. We cannot be late tonight.” I said with a laugh. I finished curling my hair then did my makeup, a slight smoky eye and red lip, before putting on my dress. Dani and I had gone dress shopping yesterday, I had found a gorgeous short black dress with lace sleeves while she got a sleeveless navy dress. Brian went into the bathroom to fix his hair and throw his clothes on while I put my dress on. When he walked out he let out a low whistle. “Now I know why I couldn’t see you in it before we left. You are smoking.” I life’s my head to look at him and couldn’t help but stare. He was wearing a charcoal gray button down with the first two buttons unbuttoned and a pair of black dress pants. “Like what you see?” He smirked. I cleared my throat and put on my heels. “You clean up nice, Haner.” A chuckle left his throat as he walked over to kiss me. “Please, you were practically drooling.” I rolled my eyes playfully and grabbed my clutch, “You ready to go?” He nodded and helped the door open, “Let’s go see your mom babe.” We met up with Dani and Matt into the lobby and we all climbed into her rental car and headed toward the ballroom to surprise our mom for what was hopefully going to be the best birthday she’s ever had.
