Coming Home

Cross a Cold State Line

FOUR MONTHS LATER (We're gonna call it April)

Charlie looked me up and down, an eyebrow quirking as he took in my now bare apartment. It was weird to watch him scrutinize my tiny apartment. It was weird for me to see it after all these years of seeing it with clutter and all my furniture.

"Is it weird?"

I smiled softly. "Not as weird as I thought it would be. Is it weird for you?"

"Is what weird?"

I nudged his shoulder and chuckled at him. "You know what, Charlie. Is it weird to pack up your life and move across the country with a woman you're in love with?"

He picked me up and held me against his chest, pressing a kiss to my mouth gently. "Who said I was in love with you?"

"You did!"

Charlie nodded and kissed me again. "Oh, right, I did." He smiled and helped me carry the last of my boxes into our moving truck.

It really was weird to move after years and years and years of living in the same state. I hadn't picked up and moved in a long, long time. It was crazy but it felt right. Today, I was starting my new path down a life I finally wanted to live.

Things had changed the last four months. Charlie and I had truly and really established our relationship. And the sex with him was mind blowing! We were very evenly matched, and I loved getting to be with him. I was on a good path for my career. A place in California had offered for me to be one of the sole social workers. They were going to let us use our own brand of psychology to help veterans. Charlie had got a job in California, something he always wanted to do. He was a history teacher and a prestigious high school.

"Ready?" Charlie asked, settling into the passenger seat of our rental truck. Our cars were already down at our new place; we drove them down there and then flew back to finish up packing. We would be living together, and I was excited about it.

"I'm very much ready," I said, smiling at him.

Finally, my life could begin.

Notes

I know it's short, but I am VERY sick and just wanted to crank something out for you. As soon as I see a doctor and get some good medicine, I'll write y'all a GOOD chapter.
