From Mountains to Lone Stars

Travel

The road was a blur. When you'd driven it as many times as I had, everything looked the same. The drive from Reno to Vegas was always the worst. People often didn't realize how far apart the two cities were. They were on opposite sides of the state and there was nothing but desert and Tonopah between the two. Day one was always the worst.

To be fair, day two wasn't much better. Day two was from Vegas to El Paso. If you've never been to El Paso, consider yourself lucky. Arizona and New Mexico were much like Nevada, desert everywhere with a rare mountain.

Day three was the worst though. The drive from El Paso to Denton was nothing but flat, flat, flat and the occasional oil rig. As much as I loved Texas, I did miss the scenery of Nevada. In Reno, there were mountains in every direction and the most beautiful sunsets. I couldn't say the same for Texas.

UNT, home of the Mean Green football team and the best jazz program known to man. It was like a home to me, especially Bruce Hall where I worked. Bruce was the oldest residence hall on campus and right in the center of it all.

I was so happy to be back, even if we did have a new hall director. He was a grad student, studying music education and higher education. Our old hall director said he had been a good assistant hall director and had confidence he would kill it in this position. I would wait until I met him to pass judgement.

"Alright, let's unload and then head to your storage unit," Mom said as I parked the car outside the building.

I nodded and texted my AHD (assistant hall director) to let her know I was here. "Sounds good, Mom."

We each grabbed a box and headed inside. My AHD, Miranda, greeted us. She was a beautiful, curvy black woman with a smile that could brighten even the darkest of days. She was the main reason I hadn't quit my job.

"Hey girl!" She yelled and pulled me in for a hug. I loved her hugs.

"It's good to see you again! When do I get to meet the new HD?" I asked, setting the heavy box down as Miranda went to get the key for my room.

"He'll be here later. He's not Marcus, but he is an amazing guy. You'll like him, Mav. Hey Mama Mav!" Miranda handed me a key. I was on the same wing as the new hall director, first floor. Thank god we didn't have to take those boxes up the stairs. That had been hell last year.

"Okay, baby, looks like you got this," Mom said, "I'm spending the night with Aunt Lauren and then flying home tomorrow. Dinner with us?"

"Sounds good." I gave my mom a hug. She meant so much to me, and I should tell her that more often.

Once Mom was gone, I started unpacking my boxes, starting with my bedding. All I really wanted to do was take a nap, but we would be too busy with residence life training for me to unpack, so I had to do in the two days before RLT.

With a soft sigh, I put on my music and started the tedious job. Pantera blasted, thankfully no one was in the hall just yet. I was the first of the RAs back from break since I had the longest drive. The others would be here tomorrow and then the real work would begin.

Just as I finished unpacking my second box, someone knocked on my door. Thinking it was Miranda, I opened the door and turned back to my messy room.

"Um... hi," a deep voice said.

I whirled around and saw the cutest man ever. He was tall, way taller than me. Of course, I was a shrimp at just over five feet. He had dark hair, hazel eyes, tattoos, and muscles everywhere. A blush crept onto my cheeks.

"I'm Matt, the new hall director. I heard Pantera and had to come see which of my resident assistants had arrived." He held a hand out to me.

I shook it. "I'm Maverick. You like Pantera?"

"Love them. Maverick?"

I smiled at my hot, new hall director. "You'll learn about that later."
