From Mountains to Lone Stars
Waiting on the Doctor
Maverick's eyes widened in fear as the doctors left to prepare for her biopsy. I could see how she was holding back her tears, and I had no advice or words for her. Instead, I approached her bed and pulled her in for a tight hug. It was all I could offer right now.
"Matt..." Her voice was choked up. "I... I need to call my mom."
I nodded and pulled away from her. She looked at me, tears now forming in her eyes. I had never seen her like this. And it actually scared me a little to see her like this. Maverick was scared beyond belief. Slowly, I moved away from her and handed her her phone so she could call her mother.
Maverick nodded her head slightly; I took it as a thank you. She dialed her mom's number and I started to move away, but Mav grabbed my hand to make me stay. I gave her a small smile and sat back down.
"Mom?" Her voice was still shaky. "Mom, I'm at the emergency room. They found something on my ovary and have to do an emergency biopsy tonight. I'm really scared, Mommy."
She paused as her mom said something back to her. I could hear frustration and fear in her mother's voice. Tears actually fell down her face now. Maverick sniffed and rubbed her nose with both our hands.
"No, Mom, you don't need to come down here. I'm okay. Yes, my hall director is here with me. I... okay." Mav handed the phone over to me.
I took it with a little shock. "Hi, Mrs. Stewart. Yes, this is Matt. I've been with her the entire time."
"Do you think I need to come down?"
I paused to think about that. "Honestly, I think you should wait to hear what the biopsy says."
"Listen, Matt, our insurance is only good here. If something serious happens, I need her here. Do you understand?"
I shot a look at Maverick. I don't think I could let her leave. There was something about her that I would really miss, but more than that, her residents needed her and she was about to graduate. She couldn't just leave.
"Yes, I do."
"Good."
She hung up. I handed the phone back to Maverick and gave her a weak smile. She was still crying and rolled over to her side, away from me. That thing my heart did whenever I was around her did something else. It tugged at the sight of her, and I all I wanted was to hold her against me. I wanted to make everything better.
